I cringe at the quotes they have on that article.
there are much better sources(space.com) of info Quote:... Voyager 2's flight data system, which formats information before beaming it back to Earth, has experienced a hiccup that altered the pattern in which it sends updates home. keep in mind this thing has been bombarded by hard radiation for the past 33 years. I'm surprised we haven't run into problems before now. -Terry ----- "so listen up boy, or pornography starring your mother will be the second worst thing to happen to you today" TF2: Spy
I think it's remarkable as well that the two probes have weathered so well, especially considering the kind of shooting gallery it is out there. (Micrometeroids at near-relativistic velocities = Not!FUN)
and hey, they found the problem:
http://news.discovery.com...e-of-voyager-glitch.html single bit flip in memory. They say they don't know why it happened. Given the age of those spacecraft and the environment they are in, I would bet hard radiation + 30 year old electronics is the cause. See people, no aliens needed. It's SCIENCE! -Terry ----- "so listen up boy, or pornography starring your mother will be the second worst thing to happen to you today" TF2: Spy |
