graphic card woes

Hey all, sorry if those of you playing coh waited for me for too long.

But my graphics card (nvidia geforce 8800 gt) has apparently given up the ghost. Windows froze mid game with some strange graphical artifacts and when i rebooted Windows was running in the generic graphics card mode. Looking at the device manager said the card was failing due to an "error (code 43)".

Google has turned up a few threads which all seem to point towards a physical problem (maybe bad capacitors).

Anyone have any suggestions? I do have access to soldering equipment and it doesn't look like it's going to get much worse.

I'm off to dig up receipts and see I'm still in warranty. If not, and I can't fix it myself, anyone have a suggestion as to what to get as a replacement?

How about a GTX285? it's a recentish nvidia card but even then the longest warranty I've found is three years.

I've been pleased with the GTX260 I've got in my desktop. Both the subsidiaries I've seen selling them (EVGA and XFX) have "limited" lifetime warranties on their merchandise. Granted the first one I got was DOA but it did have a long shipping during a busy time of year, and the replacement has been exquisite.

Pretty much, nVidia stuff has been pretty solid for me. Take a look into the GTX series for their high-performance stuff.

apparently the GTX285 is out of production, as all I saw was an 'open box' unit. And I'm not going to touch that without seeing the physical unit :/

I decided to splurge a bit and pick up a GTX470, according to the reviews its got a good price/performance ratio. Thanks for the recommendations.
