3D modeling resources thread

Now that you've got the software (and an account at Daz3D.com), have a $5 voucher that's valid until the 10th. (The first one's free, the second one's cheap...)
  • Login to Daz3D
  • Click on "My Account" at the top
  • Click on "Claim A Voucher" at the bottom of the left side
  • In the box, enter FrEE3DS0FtWr
You now have $5 to spend on something in the store. If it's something created by Daz3D, you can use the entire amount on the item. If it's something created by an affiliate, you can spend half the amount on the item (for example, you can use $3 of that voucher on a $6 item if it wasn't created by Daz3D.)
  • Click on "Store".
  • Under "Useful Filters", click on "Daz Originals", then once the page has reloaded, click on Price "$0 - $4.99" (Nothing in the store is exactly $5 and usable without buying something else as well.)
  • Pick something you like, add it to your cart, and check out...

Oomph. Drrr. I was wondering why it seemed there were a number of things that seemed to not take the entirety of a voucher, and yet others that did. And I hadn't looked that deep at the voucher FAQ. Drrr.

Just to show I'm actually doing something with all this stuff... The current Daz3D forums will be going read-only sometime this month, with new forum software taking its place. In honour of that, I put together a piece I'm calling "Read, Only"

I used the default lighting because it was good enough. No shadows, but who wants shadows on a book while they're reading?

(If you squint really hard, you'll see that the white paperback on the table is "Tales of Fenspace, volume 5: Tell Your Children When")

Well, if we're posting the proof that we're actually working with this stuff, and not just collecting it on the hard drives to collect virtual dust...

Well, I picked it all up, but haven't actually installed it yet. I've got no real talent at this stuff to speak of. So from the total n00b's point of view with regards to 3d modeling...
How hard is this stuff to use?

Getting the stuff to use is harder than using it. There's some ass-time while you're figuring out the interface, and what to do with it, sure. I'll wager that at least half of the difficulty is finding what you need to complete a scene, though, rather than making it happen.

This can be the case. In some cases, it can be like LEGO.

Yes, I need to do some serious organization of my installed content.

Assuming you've backed up your computer since you installed the software (and if you haven't you should), you won't break anything by playing with the programs. And we do game together on Sundays, so you can ask if there's anything you're stuck with. (Not that my skills are l33t, but at least I know a couple of things... mostly picked up from Mark Skarr and Rev Dark.)

And I maintain a half-dozen lists of freebies, and know where to find more. (Everything in that image I posted Saturday was free when I got it...)

Since you now have Studio 4 (or can get it soon), you want these:

http://www.sharecg.com/v/58412/browse/3 ... w-Metadata

And maybe this:

Not related to the topic at hand, but these look useful as well:

Some thoughts
Maintain multiple runtimes based on whatever works for you.  I sort mine by purchase point or source.  (Ie: Daz/Renderosity/downloads)
If you like to use free resources, choose and sort them based on the license agreement - if you ever decide to start creating commercial content you will be glad you did.
Poser/Daz are great - but you will need some other programs to make the most of them.  I am using Corel Paint Shop Pro for my editing back end - it is cheaper and nearly as good as Adobe's much more expensive product.  PSP does not have Adobe's brush formats though - so if you want to use those, you have to go through some conversion steps.  Not hard, but time consuming.
Sort your runtimes in a way that makes sense to you.  (I am considering dropping my hard earned on the newest poserpro as it now allows you to move things within the libraries.)
Practice.  Practice.  Practice.  Insert Carnegie Hall joke here.
Then let it all come together.

This reminds me, I should rebackup my runtimes.

It's probably high time I went for something like that, since I do have DS4, and indeed, that's what I've pretty much been playing in. (Part of me wonders if I should delete Poser 7 from my laptop, if only because I'm doing things exclusively in DazStudio, and that mostly because I just prefer the way that interface works.)

Oooh... I like this one. http://www.daz3d.com/i/shop/itemdetails/?item=8771

You can use this as an engineering space... the windows would be great for some sort of observation portal into a reactor chamber or something like that. Smile

Autofit for Studio 4 is currently free.

And manomano has a new outfit up:

(And I just spent $50 on March Madness - not on the featured item, but on some wishlish items. I'm supposed to be saving for next March...)

Perhaps worried about the DAZ3D giveaway of Studio 4 (which has been extended a month, BTW), Smith Micro is giving away Poser 9 until the 16th:

http://poser.smithmicro.com/trial.html

(Although this is just a 30-day trial version, unlike the full-product Studio.)

An important new piece for DAZ3D Genesis is on sale for Platinum Club members, at least for those of us with a substantial content install for their old Generation 3 figures. Why, yes, despite a tight budget, I'm picking this one up for myself.

http://www.daz3d.com/i/shop/itemdetails/?item=14206

And all the clothes for Gen 3 figures is 60% off through the weekend. There's stuff there that is not available for the newer figures.
