Well that's an interesting question.

Do we have enough people who visit these boards to be worth it to temp shut it down for a day to get them to sit up and take notice? Or would that simply be an inconvenience for the rest of us and not worth it? I suggest that this community is small enough that it would be better to just use the boards to discuss things and send people in the right directions for more info. But that's just me.

This brings up another question for Bob. This issue is political. But it seems to transcend the usual disagreements we have on the Political forum. NOBODY likes this and I'm pretty sure that conservatives and liberals alike in this community are on the same page here and willing to put aside differences to fight this in whatever small way we can. Thus, should this topic stay here in general? Or should there be a sticky ON General to point people to Politics to discuss it?

Your call of course. I won't argue with whichever way you go.

It's a little late now... Anything we do now will seem like we're jumping on the bandwagon.

If a second day of protest is staged, then I'd say we should join in, but there's no point in doing something on our own after the fact.

Besides the "it's a bit late" part, there's also the "Do we have the capability to do so?" question.

Well, the banner variant is certainly possible, if Bob feels like it. '.'

I was thinking about this yesterday, and because I somehow completely missed announcements of the planned outage -- probably because I've been sick and doing what I can to distract myself from it for several days -- I didn't have any time to plan anything. And like Rob said, now it's a bit late to do anything.

That said, had I been aware of the plans I would have done something for both the forums and my website. Not that enough people visit the latter on a given day to make it worth it, but, you know, the effort's the thing.

If one wants to do something to protest SOPA/PIPA, one could do this:

(I'm told it's "making the rounds on LJ and Dreamwidth", but I saw it on the DAZ3D forums.)

I like it. But at this point maybe it's a just a touch short notice? Or has this been circulating a while? I'm wondering with only a little more than a month's advance to work with, can you reach enough people and will they show enough discipline overall to make it work as intended?

If you could get the major "social media" sites to link this enough, then maybe?

I just saw it today - I don't know how long it's been circulating.

(But how much organization do we need to not do something?)

I like the idea... but since I'm already not spending the money with them, it's mostly moot. Unless I decide to also not buy used during that time period.

Two things to alleviate the immediate response. One, Obama's already announced his intent to veto CISPA, and the vote yesterday was not by a veto-proof majority. And second, it's not expected to pass the House.

That doesn't mean we shouldn't stop hammering our reps to kill it, though.

Two things, 1) there is speculation that Obama will back down on the veto and 2) don't you mean Senate as the House is the one that passed it?

1) I have not yet heard that -- I haven't seen anything like that on my phone's newsfeed today.

2) Yes, that is what I meant to type, but I'm sick and heavily medicated.

In news to hand SOPA's apparently scrapping at it's coffin lid demanding to be let out

Minor protests are appearing in the usual places, citizens of the rest of the world are of cause going: 'You f'ing crazy Yanks, don't you have something better to do?' and are treating the entire thing as a non-event or something that'll not effect them. Wrong, as far I can tell if it comes back, well it's probably going to be darknet time for most US hosted content, followed shortly by content hosted in the countries signed up with a certain so-called free trade agreement.

It would be interesting to see how long it lasts. Much like the Prohibition. Because I can't see the American public tolerating that sort of shenanigans for very long.

Yarr harr, fiddledy dee, hearing this news is no surprise to me. They blame loss of sales on a net that is free, dad-gum those pirates!

More thoughtful analysis is currently crowded out of my mind by sheer exasperated disgust.
