I figured it might be useful to try have one thread where we could talk about various Kickstarter projects, given that we seem to have a bunch of them floating around.
So, here's a Kickstarter for a group making a game console based on the Android OS. The Kickstarter began on July 9th. They have, as of this post, raised $3,626,171.

Open-source, modular-build automobiles
It didn't get funded, though. Which sucks, b/c I've been saying for years, speaking as a professional in the industry, that someone needs to start building cars this way. I want a car that I can build like a computer, dangit!

Of course, the flexible funding option means they get to keep the $4,845 remaining, so at least they got something from this. I wish them the best of luck with their project.

Huh, I thought Local Motors was something along those lines. Besides I think one of the reasons why the concept hasn't taken off it due to all the different legal restrictions on what's considered a car fit for public road use. Still, that doesn't mean that you can't try to do it yourself like what some of the car modifiers do with the cheapest car of a common platform - fit the engine train from the high performance model.

The first RTS to let you fight across planets.
Made by the team behind Monday Night Combat, with inspiration from (and the developers of the graphics engines for, and ex-developers of) Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander. Only game I've ever seen where you can send a builder to the moon, build a base there, and use it to shell the battlefield back on the original planet.
Also, asteroid bases can be used as space-to-ground kinetic projectiles. I am not making this up.

I have only ever seen two RTSes that let you play on multiple planets at once (Light of Altair and the (horrible) expansion to Empire Earth), and they both treated it basically like playing an island map. This is the first game I've seen that actually treats it like space.

These guys are trying to purchase Tesla's Wardenclyffe lab so it can be added to the National Register of Historic Sites, with the eventual intent of renovating the facility into a science museum focusing on Tesla's work.
They got a write up in Ars Technica, which is how I found this.

Goal since met, although there's still some time left.
I've seen (but not played) a few titles that did this sort of thing before, but this one seems a lot more flavorful. Enough that after watching a couple gameplay videos, I was willing to throw in my $15.
But I really hope they do some work on x64 system support. The demo was trying to install x86 runtimes (which failed), and the game won't run in dx9 or dx11 modes.

Planetary Annihilation is down to two weeks, now. They've met their goal, and are almost halfway through to the first of who-knows-how-many stretch goals.
(At their current rate, they should be able to reach the second goal (gas giants and better orbital units) before they finish funding. Should be fun.)

given the standard spread on the contributions (lots at the beginning, lots at the end, not much in the middle) water planets are not a question, and gas giants are almost guaranteed. I'm itching to see what the stretch goals after those two are

Break out the meteorite shields: Hussie is making a Homestuck adventure game. I don't think there's really any question as to whether this will be funded.

The Planetary Anihilation Kickstarter has managed to double their goal, with a little over 24hrs still to go. Their next stretch goal is for an Orchestral soundtrack.

Right, so they got the GALACTIC WAR at $1.8 million. They got the GALACTIC SCORE at $2 million.
As of this writing, they're 5h45m from the end of the KS, and only ~$11k from the last goal- a 'making of' documentary.
(Also, look at Eternity Dice- they're D6es, hand-made from solidified lava from Mt. Vesuvius.)

I like the dice and put myself down for a set of D6s. Why? I like dice and think those ones are interesting - just don't point me at ones made from diamonds & platinum, my wallet won't thank you. It's all ready grumbling over Forgeworld stuff.

I hope you made sure they weren't FUDGE dice or map dice. Their pledges are fairly easy to mix up.
I almost bought the wrong set. Several times.
EDIT: Obsidian Entertainment is making a new PC RPG, Project Eternity, in the style of Baldur's Gate/Planescape: Torment/Icewind Dale. They've had it up for a few hours, and already have $260,000- over 20% funding.

I'm really tempted. In fact, I think I will support this one. But it really looks unlikely to get funded, given how little progress they've made and how little time there is left. Which is a shame, because if these people really can pull off what they're claiming, it's a capability that the world really needs (not like it needs, say, potable water, but still).

Here's one that (gasp) isn't a game! It might not be as much of a service to humanity as SkyeFire's, and it might be expensive to get into, but it is awesome.
LIFX LED Smart Lightbulbs
They're well over 900% funded, with almost two months left on the clock. The devteam is currently in the "WTF!?" phase of things, and is looking at both improving the end product, and trying to make an order of magnitude more product than expected.
(This one's personal for me- I bought an LED bulb from Thinkgeek, hoping to light (or accent) by room with it, only to find out it has basically no lumens behind it. This is everything I wanted, except brighter, more customizable, and several times smarter.)
