Mori-san, please give Comrade Darklighter artificial respiration.
It flashes by so fast it's easy to miss, but at 1:27 Captain Okita has taken off his cap.

Okay, so I've not experienced anything in the franchise. ANYTHING.
I have a fairly good idea of what it is, but no clue where to start. Do I watch 2199 and not the original, both, or what?

2199 is a remake of the original, so you can just watch this and not miss anything.

That's a good question.
Technically you don't NEED to go watch the older series and movies. Since Y 2199 is a remake of the original 1974 series and presumably if successful, they'll go on from there to the Comet Empire story and beyond, you're basically getting in on the ground floor and experiencing it as any new fan would.
I'd recommend seeing the old series though if you can. Almost all the old episodes are available on Youtube. Both the original and the Star Blazers adaptations of Seasons 1, 2 and 3.
If you do, try to be a little forgiving of the animation, particularly in season 1. Remember when it was made. Also - different times, different mores, and different visions of the future. In particular, be prepared for some cultural subtext about WWII and the Cold War. And because of the age of the show, there's a LOT of "Zeerust". Stuff which has aged badly or in odd ways.
If you've ever watched anime from the 1960s and 70s, you'll kind of know what to expect. Also Godzilla films and other Toho films like the Mysterons of the period.
Naturally I say this as an old-school fan. And I'm biased of course.
And really - there is NOTHING wrong with simply experiencing the 2199 version of the show with no reference to the original.
It's really a VERY good retelling, and it's expanding on the original in many wonderful ways. The producers of the show are obviously as enamored of the original as us old-time fans. Heck - they ARE old time fans themselves who made good in many cases!
Take it from this old-timer - they've done the original proud.
I can't imagine being more pleased both with the faithfulness to the original spirit and the ways in which they've decided to make the show different and new. It's really Triple-A material all the way.
If there's anything that -does- confuse you or make you scratch your head, look me up. If I can't answer something, I know exactly who to go to who can.
Umm... did I read that correctly? January 12th?

DVD 5 is available for pre-order - it's due out on May 28:

I'm not sure, I've seen several names named. Try the usual search sites?

Most any hints I get turn into dead ends. I can't understand why a fansub group would not have any way of notifying people of new releases, even if it is due to increased leeriness of Homeland Security AKA Big Brother.

BA, I doubt that there would be too many fansubers doing a release due to the fact that an english sub's all ready on the discs. And my first-press of the blu-ray's in route http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=BCXA-488 has at time of post 17 first-pressings left and all the special thing is is an additional art sleeve/slipcover.
Also another thing to remember is the Japanese version of the *IAA has gotten laws passed to make uploading of certain copywrite material to the internet by Japanese citizens, a criminal offence(2-10 year imprisonment). So acquiring RAWs to do a zero-day fansub has gained a few hurdles. That doesn't mean that no-ones gone an bought the physical media and posted the contents on youtube.....(just not me on the second part.)
Rob, I should be getting the DVDs instead as it would make taking screenshot so much easier. For example, the party for leaving the solar system, there's a background character who's either crossdressing or is not the typical bodytype for their gender in an anime.

besides, work like this should be rewarded with royalties whenever we can afford.
Episodes up to 10 can be found on Animeplus tv though. And, having watched Ep 10, for some reason I keep thinking of a certain Buxom Red haired blue Skinned person from Undocumented Features. *wry grin*

Well, my copy has arrived and for once I actually had some trouble playing it - not a region thing, more the 'hey we've revoked some AACS keys' thing or something like that!
Also I think I forgot to mention in another thread I picked up an artbook for Yamato 2199 and I was amazed that they're still hand drawing percentages of what we're seeing on screen. Yes, there's CG but that detail on the CG stuff, hand drawn.

Yes - in many cases they're simply using the CG as a guide for the hand drawn stuff. But then again, they're also using the CG to fill in stuff on hand drawn too.
It's one of the best possible blendings of the two techniques I've ever seen. The only other thing I can think of that reminds me of it is The Iron Giant.

Hmm. Watching two episodes today and leaving the other two for tomorrow...
More arguments in favor of my devout hope that the finale will involve Dessler getting his head splattered by one of the people his unforgivable abuse of power has hurt. A lot of good storytelling, some stuff that fanfic authors will doubtless seize on for shipping wars, and a really pretty new ending theme.
I remain amazed that this is a show associated with the man who gave us the numbing drek of Queen Emereldas and the frankly wretched Galaxy Express 999, but that doesn't keep it from being really good.
EDIT: Watched the other two. Given the previous 'dimensional rift' episode, the space sub actually makes something approaching sense. I'm pleased.
Also? DESTROY THE TELEPHONE. IT'S THE ONLY THING THAT MAKES SENSE.

Oh yes. Shotgunned the whole shebang last night. I am absolutely loving this series. I'd almost say that they should have done this sooner, but even then it probably would not have been this good.
And I am getting ideas for my SBY2199 step. Heh-heh-heh...
Oh, and also.... Why am I getting the sneaking suspicion that poor little Yuria Misaki has gone 'bye-bye'?

My impression is that she spent the Telephone Episode being possessed by the ghost, yeah, but that she let her go at the end once the crew was safe.
