Looking for a software recommendation

Peg and I have just gotten a tablet, an ASUS Transformer TF300T, a very nice Android tablet with a keyboard/dock and lots of other nice features. What it doesn't have is a native movie playing app which handles subtitles in Matroska videos. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good movie player that can show Matroska subtitles?

I've not fiddled much with video on mine- I have the TF200T, which is basically feature-identical- but if you need any other type of apps, I'd be glad to make some suggestions.

have you tried VLC? I have yet to run across a codec/subtitle/whatever that it doesn't deal with.

Okay, I've tried MX Player, but I'm getting weird behavior with the sound. It plays fine for a minute or two, then cuts out for about 15 seconds. Then it comes back, only out of sync with the action by a couple of seconds. And it does this over and over.
VLC I haven't tried because I'm apparently not allowed to download it because I live in the US.

That's odd, because I've been able to get it just fine. VLC is an awesome player. For android, you should be able to get it here: http://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... betav7neon
It's a beta build so, YMMV and all, though.

You can try grabbing a nightly build of VLC from http://nightlies.videolan.org/ for the appropriate chipset. It's not guaranteed to be functional, but at least you can get it. And it comes with a fashionable blue traffic cone.
I'm really not sure if this is a software patents, device support, or GPL license issue at Videolan. Everything I see on Google about it seems to be speculation.

Might be a snippy set of suits trying to prevent "BLURAY RIPS? OH NOES!"
Also makes my buying a Bluray drive practically useless, since I'd need to shell out enough to just freaking buy a "set-top" player to buy licensed software to make the drive play blu-rays.

I've tried MX Player with just hardware and just software decoding, and with both enabled; nothing changes no matter what I select. But I'll check the link and see if there's something I can use in it.
I'll see if I can download one of the VLC nightlies when I get home tonight.

mplayer for Android is up on github if you want to play with it. Last updates were in July of 2011 but if the others don't work it is something else you can try.

How about taking a different angle: transcoding the videos to mp4/h.264 and hardcoding the subs?

I did not have a chance last night to investigate this further. I will note that the native movie player on the tablet had no problems with video or sound, had no jumps or skips or sync issues. It just didn't show subtitles. So it may not be a resolution issue. I will have to investigate the transcoding solution; it is not anything I have ever done before.

I use Handbrake to do my transcoding to .mp4 format. Include the subtitle file and you should be good to go. You can use mkvextract from MKVToolNix to extract the subtitle file.
