Great Northeastern Snow Storm

#76
Okay, it ended a few hours about with about 8 inches -- 20 cm -- accumulation. We are dug out, and we dug out my mother-in-law, who started her job herself and got about halfway through it before giving up, exhausted.

It's only now gotten under freezing; which means the melt from earlier in the evening will ice over. God, I hope we both have delayed openings tomorrow...

Bob, you should move down here to San Antonio. Plenty of warm weather, wide open spaces, and you might even find a job in the field you special in - they really ought to call San Antonio the next Silicon insert-geological-feature-here.  It only ever snows here once ever ten-to-fifteen years here, and it only ices over occasionally (just gotta watch those bridges - they freeze first).

Part IV - This Time It's Personal is due to come in tonight at midnight+/- 2 hours. This one will be extra special because it will end by turning into an ice storm.

And Part V - A New Beginning is supposed to hit at the end of the weekend.

BA, I've been to San Antonio. The only thing I hate worse than snow is 100F plus humidity.

L.A. is looking better to me every year.

I could not do LA. Traffic and air quality up there is vile. San Diego, on the other hand...

Stop at the hardware store on the way into work, and buy a bag of rock salt before they're all gone. With freezing rain coming, you'll need it.

On the down side, we had a foot of snow yesterday. On the plus side, I got to work from home. (Despite being 10 minutes from the office, there was no way I could get my car out of my neighborhood, even after the plow came through.) Also, we're getting above freezing weather for the next three or four days, so the streets should clear. Hopefully. The mound of shoveled snow has almost buried the lamppost in my front yard.
EDIT: All things being equal, I'm very glad that my SO didn't take the job in Wisconsin.

True, but right now I miss the sun. Hasn't shown up  all day. Feels like Seattle.

Why do you think I prefer San Antonio so much? Sure, it rains like a futhermucker down here sometimes. Sure, we had to build a giant-ass dam with an equally giant-ass underground sluice way under the city just to keep downtown from flooding during tornado season... But I'll be damned if you don't get some nice sun here.

Rob, according to Jalopnik rock salt is apparently approaching unobtainium levels in certain parts of the North American continent - as in (like ammo) there's none on the shelf at any big box store. In fact there's a poster there that's currently attempting to daily drive a corvette in Montreal with ~300 pounds of salt on board for ballast who was advised to conceal the bags due to the increased risk of car theft/break in.

And cockroaches the size of small terriers. But you have to take the good with the bad. I miss Texas. Even the summer weather. But it could be worse; Rachel could've taken the job in Wisconsin.

Oh, I know - Ottawa is one of those parts. (I was lucky enough to find a store that still had some on a quiet shelf near the back of the store, last night. I bought two large pails of ice melter instead of a "shaker" bottle that they had out where people could see them.)

Buy it when you can. We've grown unaccustomed to this amount of snow in a year.

Rod's right on the money. We stopped in last night at the only place I'd seen ice melt for sale in the past few days, and they were all out.

Turns out to be less critical than we thought it would be -- we got about an inch and a half of snow/sleet and then lots of rain. I've already cleared my driveway of what I described to my boss as "a couple tons of dirt-flavored slurpee" -- and I had the foresight last night to put tarps over my car and my front walk. It's over freezing, too, and it looks like some of the ice that was out there earlier is melting already.

Yeah, we ran out of de-icer back before Christmas and I think it's a little scarce around here too. Though I did see a big bag of Morton's "Safety Salt" over at the Circle K last week. We've been lucky, since we have a short driveway, we've managed without. We do have a couple of 5 lb. boxes of the stuff that I got some time ago for ice cream making that I'm keeping in mind, should the roads get icier than they have been. Of course, right now it's about 40 degrees and we're getting lots of melt. Hopefully, we can avoid any further accumulation.

At about 1530 local:
We saw (heavy snow flurries), we freaked (PTSD from last week), and we went!!( out of the building as fast as we can)
It would be funny, but no one is laughing.

Quoted from classic conversations with our local gaming group:

"Why are we sitting around in this nice warm building when there's a perfectly good parking lot outside?"

(We were known for lengthy conversations that continued into the parking lots while we were supposedly heading home... for hours.)

And the best news I've heard all week: the feared 30-inch snowstorm that some models had predicted for the weekend is now nothing more than a couple of snow showers with no significant accumulation expected.

...you know, when I said you could send some of it over here, I didn't expect you to do it!
We got an inch or two (enough to make the locals, who don't know snow like you do, close down businesses) Thursday afternoon.  Then more snow and wind that night.  More snow Friday, and more today... with a bit of freezing rain added in.
We figure there's 6-8" out there, more than we've had since 2008.  It's made for a quiet three-day weekend here at home.

Okay, our downgraded monster storm left half an inch to an inch on us, and we have a sunny day today. Great.

Wednesday night another goddamned storm coming in. Not so great.

WCBS TV news weather girl last night noted that our area usually gets 25 inches of snow during the whole season. We're about halfway through this season and before last night's accumulation we had over 41 inches already.

Gods save me from snow. Hate, hate, hate, hate it.

If you hate the snow, and you don't mind the occasional brush fire in midwinter, I'd like to welcome you to sunny Southern California. Today is a beautiful day, and I'm wearing shorts outside in the garden. Heck, last week I went outside, and it's actually warmer at midnight than midday, up to 70°F with a brisk east wind.

We are finally getting some rain, after a long dry spell. Heck, in the last storm, we got all of 0.05 inches.  A real gully-rinser.

But if you do come, please, bring water.

You know, my dad grew up in the Cascades of Washington State...

So yeah.  Screw living in the North Eastern US.

We're on Red Alert for YA incoming Atlantic storm. Winds > 160 expected. Along with more rain.

Going to be fun tonight. Some dopey fuck called Noah is building an ark because the voices in his head told him to
