Paddy's guide to surviving Atomic War

Brough to you by the Civil Defence

An interesting piece of history maybe. It says a lot about how the Irish State saw itself at the time, and says some very different things to Protect and Survive and the like. It takes a fair amount of care about retaining and protecting livestock and milk-producers and has a particularly heavy emphasis on fallout defenses as opposed to the initial explosion of a nuclear weapon. It doesn't get to the direct effects of a bomb going off until part IV.... it's almost an afterthought.

Clearly, this was written by people expecting to not actually be bombed on purpose, as it generally assumes power supplies and infrastructure will remain mostly intact. Whether wishful thinking or not depends on how cynical you're being. The wind blows in off the Atlantic so there's a chance of avoiding a nasty dose...

That said, it's an odd book. And a rare thing nowadays to find. But it cropped up recently.

Also applicable to Colony drops, impact events and the death of Bono. And probably more fucking useful than those poxy iodine tablets.... those yokes were a farce.

Since there is not much in Ireland at the time that qualifies as a target, counterforce or countervalue during the Cold War, their supposition would be correct. Generally. Unless A Russian ICBM goes off course and hits Ireland by accident. The U.S. lofted ICBM's to Kwajelein to make sure it works. Even then there was debate on whether it'll be accurate as advertised since the trajectory was east-west rather than north-south. And that's the Americans. Russian quality control left much to be desired. A missile heading for Portsmouth might end up at Belfast. So they compensated with numbers. Which makes more lilkely there'll be a warhead or four going to Ireland. Not intentionally mind you.
Fall out? In a "limited" exchange..10 missiles lobbed by each side, may have chance there. Though the cesium-141 is something you'll want to monitor.  Full blown WW III? Kiss homo sapiens as dominant species on the planet goodbye
