Fell off the wagon
Fell off the wagon
#1
As a recovering D&D3.x player, it's too easy sometimes to slip and lose a weekend to making up a prestige class, or just come up with a new feat over dinner. I'm sorry to say it, but this happened to me just now, so I hereby submit myself for public shaming.

Lyrical Frenzy
Prerequisites: Bardic Music, Barbarian Rage, appropriate character background
Description: Many of the cultures which are famed for producing berzerking warriors also have a strong bardic tradition, often as the primary keepers of tribal history. By necessity these wild skalds have developed the ability to remain clear headed enough to maintain the chant of their tale while still whipping up the energy needed to impress their fierce kin.
Effect: Allows Bard and Barbarian levels to stack for the purposes of Bardic Music and Barbarian Rage. The character still cannot use spells or put on a magical performance while Raging, however.
Note: The "Practiced Caster" feat is also recommended as for any other multi-classed spellcaster, to keep the Caster Level up with up to four other class levels.

There's some old family advice, normally related to whiskey, but I think which might apply here..

You can never fall off a wagon you don't get on in the first place.

Enjoy the DnD.... no need to be ashamed of it.

Given that the Barbarian's Rage ability is the centerpiece of the class, giving full Rage progression via a feat seems overpowered. It reminds me of the people who try making Spellthief 1/Wizard 17 builds in the belief that the Master Spellthief feat will let them steal 9th-level spells (hint: it doesn't. While they can theoretically steal 9th level spells, they've only got one spell slot to squeeze nine slots worth of spell into. Because there isn't enough room for the stolen spell, it instantly goes right back to the original caster. You'd need at least nine levels of Spellthief to hold a single 9th-level spell at a time).
Since Rage is too powerful (unless you count each Bard level as 0.5 levels towards Rage?) and advancing Trap Sense is boring, perhaps progressing the Barbarian's Improved Uncanny Dodge class feature would suffice? It'll help keep your lightly armored character from being sneak attacked.
Alternately, you could try allowing a Bard to spend uses of their Bardic Music ability to enter or extend a Rage.

Hmm, good point - maybe if it was capped at up to four non-Barbarian levels, like Focused Caster is? It's kind of like that one in reverse. As for being ashamed of D&D or not - it's not the tabletop gaming, it's the class/level based game engine that burns my biscuits. Distant Horizons Games did a pretty decent point-buy rebuild of 3.x with The Codex Persona and The Practical Enchanter, but Barbarian/Bard is pretty much the only character concept left in the straight system that could make me endure it, and every now and then something related to it sneaks out.

Bard/Barbarian.... I'll go with Pathfinder's smexy new "Skald" class.

Can the Skald kill two hundred men and play a mean six-string at the same time?
