if I can't have a Blackberry, what do I want?
if I can't have a Blackberry, what do I want?

I really like my Blackberry smartphone, because it has a physical keyboard and security wasn't an afterthought when it was designed. But it's looking more and more like Blackberry (the company) might disappear, although I really hope not.

If I can't get a Blackberry, what do I want, keeping in mind the reasons I gave above?

I tend to explain the Android/Iphone dichotomy in the following way:

Iphone: More secure, easier to use. Better for non-tech people and for those who want something that works easily. Tends to have less option to what can be put on it. You have to deal with Apple stuff to use it. Tends to be costlier. Very solid, from my experience (I dropped my a dozen times while on my bike, and scratches were the only issue).

Android: More open, more options. Better for tech people. Mainly for people who want a pocket computer instead of an actual (multi-tool) phone. Can be cracked in multiple way. Battery tends to last longer.

After that, it depends on your own preferences.

I believe the iPhone does not have a physical keyboard at all...?

Not physically, yes, but there's one that pops up on the touch screen when you need to type.

I'm faster with a physical keyboard than I am with a stylus that mimics the attributes of the 98+% of people who don't need a stylus to use touchscreens.

Neither the Iphone nor the Android phones require a stylus.

Rob, is your Blackberry a government issue phone or not? Because I just got issued mine. Still learning the ins and outs. I swear the way to use it is the opposite of how to use an android phone. I do believe some of the newer iphones use fingerprint scanning now instead of a pin number.

You mean to unlock the phone? My Samsung Galaxy 5S (Android) has that as an option.

My BB's a personal phone - government gave me a Galaxy 3. (And I picked up a stylus for the ~30% of the time my fingers and the touchscreen don't like each other.)

It's definitely a learning curve to figure out everything. If you have a Blackberry Playbook, you can use the same sorts of gestures... but almost nobody bought a Playbook.

I found that too, when I was issued a Galaxy for a work phone that I needed a stylus 60% of the time just to do anything on it. Something I've not really run into with iDevices. Though if I want to mess with people I've got a Symbol-Motorola PDT that I can potentially use as a phone, though a working brick or cordless deskphone would be better at it.
