“We can never undo what we have done. We can never go back in time. We write history with our decisions and our actions. But we also write history with our responses to those actions. We can leave the pain and the damage in our wake, unattended, or we can do the work of acknowledging and fixing, to whatever extent possible, the harm that we have caused.”

Statecraft: The Great Game Of Diplomacy, Espionage & War By Other Means, 1732, Rouen University Press' Wrote:…additionally, much criticism has been levied over the centuries against Heather Ingerman's espionage failures, especially those early in her tenure. Frequently, such critics find support in her own journals, especially with sufficient cherry-picking to avoid her own cogent analysis of what she did wrong and how to do better in the future. What many of these critics forget is that Ingerman was a teenaged girl at the time when she was first appointed to the role of spymaster of Berk; while she had been extensively trained as a spy agent, the higher-level skills required by her new elevated position took her some time to develop from first principles. It was not until later that she found a mentor in the arts of espionage that…
This week's A Thing of Vikings (which actually went up a little early so the author wouldn't miss the HTTYD panel at NYCC) begins in the Dartmoor Mountains, where the rumored dragons are eluding Hiccup's group... but, while they hunt small deer for their meals, other hunters seek larger quarry. In Bari, Sigurd Snotlout and the other riders wake up to new sleeping quarters and a rather urgent offer. Svanhildr returns to Nidaros with the other Berk-trained healers, and she and Ruffnut discuss medical matters. In the Broodery Annex on Berk, Fishlegs and the crew from Vedrarfjord discuss the finished work and the work that's still in progress. Back in Bari, Snotlout Sigurd gets a personal meeting with Gyrgir and comes to a decision about the catepan's offer. And we close back in Dartmoor, where Astrid figures things out at the very zero moment.

Chapter Trigger Warnings: Explicit Attempted Murder by Suffocation, Implied Act of Dismemberment, Implied Acts of Torture, Explicit Acts of Violence
Fiona Apple Wrote:When the pawn hits the conflicts he thinks like a king
What he knows throws the blows when he goes to the fight
And he'll win the whole thing 'fore he enters the ring
There's no body to batter when your mind is your might
So when you go solo, you hold your own hand
And remember that depth is the greatest of heights
And if you know where you stand then you know where to land
And if you fall it won't matter, 'cuz you'll know that you're right
That's not actually the epigraph to this week's A Thing of Vikings, but I didn't think to use it last week to mark the beginning of Snotlout's Sigurd's journey from piece to player. Luckily for me, it still fits.
An Introduction To Dragon Biology, 17th Edition, Oxford University Press, 1793 Wrote:Dragon biology is specific enough to be given its own distinct sub-classification within the realm of herpetology, for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, unlike most reptiles, dragons are endotherms, with the corresponding higher need for caloric intake and higher ability to maintain activity in a variety of temperature conditions. Secondarily, the draconic clade is home to a variety of unique anatomical and genetic adaptations, including the definitional petrochemical organ system and all of its myriad variations; the high silica content of their hides, tissues, and bones; and, in some breeds, the addition of a third set of limbs in the form of wings. The third reason is strictly pragmatic: due to the omnipresence of dragons within our society, the field of dragon medicine and biological research is in high demand and warrants specialization—which is probably why you are reading this textbook in the first place.
(…) Like all doctors, regardless of patient type, physicians who specialize in the treatment of dragons most often find themselves dealing with prosaic injuries, and we must remember to avoid the allure of the fascinoma and other zebras; a dragon shedding its scales out of season likely has mites, not skin necrosis, and a dragon whose flame is weak likely has swelling of the throat valves, not Flame Dousing Disorder (as the FDD virus, which ravages the dragon's symbiotic bacteria, can only be transmitted under specific circumstances and there hasn't been a recorded case in over eighty years). More common are simple injuries. While dragons are hardy and resilient creatures, they can still be tremendously fragile under certain circumstances. The wings, in particular, while sharing the fireproof nature of the rest of the dragon's hide, are simply skin with minimal scale cover, if any. Wing injuries are extremely common simply due to this vulnerability...
In the mountains of Dartmoor, Wulfhild does some world-class shooting (one of the many things in the battle that invoke our last trigger warning), then Hiccup gently-but-firmly questions a prisoner; based on what they learn from him, Heather goes out to find his friends (and throw a few more Knives in the Night). In Nidaros, Ruffnut gives birth and retains enough strength afterward to reject Father Henriksson's offer of infant baptism. Back in Dartmoor, Astrid helps her mother with the healer-ing, and this week's epigraph becomes all too relevant. In Bari, Sigurd makes a very Snotlout escape from his cell (invoking our middle two trigger warnings along the way). In Dartmoor again, Astrid steps up to make an escape plan. Returning to Bari, Sigurd and the rest of the dragon Varangians get away, though not unscathed (quite scathed, actually). And finally, in Nidaros, Father Henriksson doesn't take rejection well, invoking our first trigger warning.
