Fanfiction update thread 20: Lets do the timewarp again

Yeah.  Embers is one of *those* fics.  Some time ago, I stopped, went back to the beginning, and read it all the way through again.  I have a suspicion that I'll want to do that at least once more.  The stuff she writes is good, but its so dense with characters going every which way that it's not trivial for me to keep track of what's going on.

Keeping track of the characters seems trivial* enough to me, but that may be due to a combination of background**, reading comprehension, memory, and that since Embers went to a once every three weeks schedule I've been rereading the thing in between updates sometimes, just to keep track of the foreshadowing. (Not mention, 'okay, that is probably important, let's go back and see what we can find to support it', especially when I can't remember the locations of the specific relevant bits.)

I usually am not surprised by the big stuff, but, for example, my rant at the last update involving the Gaang, IIRC, clearly predicted that the next time we saw them would be during the events of The Beach. However, we are now clearly covering material from The Avatar and the Fire Lord. Mention of The Beach is restricted to mention of reports about sightings of the Avatar's band. (Note that in canon, Combustion Man intercepted these reports.)

I'm looking forward to cognates for Day of Black Sun, Boiling Rock, and Sozin's Comet, even if I don't have any knowledge of specific foreshadowing for the last.

Probably the limiting factor for how many times I've reread Ember is the number of times I've read the latest chapter, which is currently only twice, from start to end. (I've had some big restrictions on my time.)

I'd note that the last episode I saw was The Puppetmaster, before a combination of time, access, and technical issues finally stopped me. (I missed some of the earlier episodes, due to distaste for some of the hijinks in addition to above factors.) So, I've been having to supplement my memory of the show with the Avatar wiki.

*I use the fanfic downloader/calibre combination to keep a RTF of Embers for easier access. If I get confused, or want to research something specific, checking all instances of a word is easy, and can be very helpful.

**I've studied some of the same subjects that Vathara has. I also have some knowledge of certain titles in Vathara's outside reading lists, and think I can estimate some of the rest from what I do know. I also know that she has read at least one book by a novelist I am very fond of, who is worse than Vathara about tightly written, well thought out stuff that assumes too much knowledge, especially specialized knowledge, for as many people to enjoy it as try to read it.

I do research for a living, so I've got some familiarity with the material as well - and I still find Vathara's work hard to read. By this, I mean her writing in general, even for other stories without political or social themes. Lines of dialogue are often not well-attributed to each speaker, there's a large cast of characters, there's a lot of abstract and dream-like imagery...all these things make it tough for a reader to follow along. I like it, but it is dense.
In the interests of keeping this an on-topic post:- Lelouch of Brittania updated to Chapter 27 last week; I don't think that was reported here. Code Geass Alt-U, Lelouch working for the Brittanian Empire.

Oh I was aware of all the foreshadowing she has been doing in Embers...As well as all the different plot threads she has been weaving together. As for the Xanatos angle I was aware of it but it's extent hadn't really sunk in. Nor had the sheer scope of what she is slowly building up to in Embers. Which is literally a situation in which all those different plans and plots are going to collide head on.

I've also been rereading Embers every so often to keep things fresh. Have kindleized Embers so can easily reread it.
