"Anyone can be a winner if their definition of victory is flexible enough." - The DM of the Rings XXXV

Acyl,

Technically, she has, IIRC, put in a title or two in earlier works. I hesitate to call that an entirely new phenomenom. However, Embers is something like thirty percent of the writing she has put on the internet under that name, and has been published, so far, for over two years, when her usual m.o. is to publish the whole story at once. (I can't be more precise than that, because my hand parsed spreadsheet is on a HDD I don't have access to right now. I suppose there is also a chance of her publishing stuff under that name in places other than FFN and fictionpress.) I think we can agree that it is very different from the rest of her known works, even if we have trouble agreeing on the metrics.

I do the whole latch onto a point of disagreement, and hammer away thing also. I also do it for apparent slight differences in perception. You may have noticed both of these.

To trim things down, I think there are two core issues. One is that the abnormalities of Embers' writing and final publication may have hampered her ability to edit the thing to match a specified expected audiance background. This is a matter of specification and plans changing as they are implemented. The other is that the prolonged writing period is also a prolonged learning period for her. Changes in one's own knowledge can be confusing when trying to keep track of what one has already explained, and of what one is expecting the reader to know. This is a matter of book keeping. Some of the Author's Notes, including many without links and book-lists, can be understood as attempts to correct these issues without drastic changes to the core text itself.

Having read the chapter, I think it was a shame it was so short, and I think things are more screwed up than I thought. I'm half wondering if this is going to be enough to knock me out of the story.

I haven't seen this posted here, but there've been a couple of updates to Harry Potter and the Heartlands of Time:

This marks the second or third time I've tried to read the first story of that, and it's well written but still annoys the HFIL out of me. Mysteries... I hate them, and not in the "must solve" way, more the "must burn and read something GOOD instead" way. When I have them as assigned reading for some reason, it's definately last-chapter-first for this little black duck.

I don't recall there being any huge, Holmesian mystery in that story, unless you are wondering why he is looping, which is explained mid-story, not at the end. I seem to remember Wastelands being more action adventure than mystery, so I'm not quite sure what you are referring to. ( Also, if you jump to the end without the buildup, you'll probably just be more confused what is going on.

There's action, sure, but the thrust for the first dozen chapters (at which point I gave up again) is "who dunnit to me?" or more accurately who's messing with his loopadoops - and the whole thing is so annoyingly ambiguously laid out that I don't even care, nor what the agreement was he's supposedly betrayed. That's the critical point, I suppose - failiure to inspire concern for the characters or at least curiosity over the plot. Of course, I already said that mysteries inspire the urge to do violence rather than curiosity.

Ah, ok. While it's not quite the exact answer to your gripe, I think it might be helpful to know that

And, Wings of Frontier has definitely taken a level or two in Badass with the presence of Not-Quite-EMIYA-Shirou. I am very pleased.

Interesting to note that what is on fukufics & TFF is far longer than what is on ffnet which cuts off
. Bissek must have decided to cut off the last half of the chapter for a rewrite...

Actually, there seems to be another chapter in there - the "chapter 12" linked to on that forum starts where FFn's chapter twelve ends. I suspect a title typo, rather than any drastic editorial decisions.
