All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XV
RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XV
Okay, heads up. We have a new ban evader. User:Infinite, who got himself a tempban four days ago for repeated Term 1 violations, just popped up as the brand-new user "Hole" to revert reversions I made of a pair of his changes. "Hole" has been permbanned as a sockpuppet, but given Infinite's general level of maturity, I expect we'll be seeing him doing this again and again. Note that he did this when he had less than three days left on a week-long tempban; as his past communications on the wiki testify, he's the kind of person who thinks the wiki is his personal writing pad and anyone who tells him otherwise is a tyrant trying to steal his toys from him.

I have been Roland, Beowulf, Achilles, Gilgamesh, Clark Kent, Mary Sue, DJ Croft, Skysaber.  I have been
called a hundred names and will be called a thousand more before the sun grows dim and cold....
RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XV
Meanwhile, TVGarbage still isn't bothering to make sure he has his work names and markup right. This after several weeks and several rounds of explicit instruction on what is wanted and needed. The most we've gotten out of him is excuses and "whoops".

I honestly don't know what to do next. Part of me wants to hit him with tempbans until he starts marking things up right, but another part of me feels like that's unfairly targeting him for stuff more casual editors can get away with. What do you guys think?

I just asked for a CheckUser on the two accounts. If Hole is Infinite, then I think that gives us reason to extend Infinite's current block.

TV Garbage has been doing almost everything that we've asked... to the Exact Words, and not much more. I'm seeing this as Aspergers'-level behaviour and (since it's merely annoying and time-consuming, not disruptive) am willing to tolerate it... for now.

Bob, if somebody asks whether the rules apply to you even though you're an admin, you can now point to this and say "yes".

Aargh. I still can't delete a file. It doesn't matter what file it is, I always get the same database error.

Is anybody else having this problem?

The CheckUser came back as "inconclusive" - an unusual report.

So I'm not going to cancel Hole's block, and I'm not going to extend Infinite's.

Works for me, Rob. If Infinite behaves as I expect him to, he'll arrange his own further banning on his own.

Meanwhile, on another topic from the Steward's Noticeboard, our SocialProfile link spam has been addressed, and further, we have access again to Special:EditProfile:

Quote:@Looney Toons: I've stripped the contents from the profiles now, but in doing so I noticed that the original reason that we restricted access to this tool has since been addressed. We should soon be able to allow admins to access Special:EditProfile soon. -- Void 19:58, 23 February 2020 (UTC)
A bureaucrat should now be able to restore access to the editothersprofiles right as they see fit. -- Void 20:28, 23 February 2020 (UTC)

Oh, good!

If it was up to me, I'd put social-profile deletion permissions in the same profiles as any other page-deletion profiles.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XV
And now TVGarbage has taken it upon himself to delete items from YMMV pages he doesn't agree with: this and this, so far...

Per the yellow banner that appears when you edit a YMMV, "Deleting YMMV entries because you disagree with them will result in a temporary ban at the least." I think we need to unlimber a clue-by-four and whap him with it.

EDIT: And he's decided to unilaterally change the definition of The Scrappy, deleting established criteria and adding his own. I'm going to revert these changes with a note that he should propose the changes on the talk page before implementing them.

You're kinder that I would have been, Bob. That's two strikes, so if I catch him in one more blatant disregard for the rules this week, he'll be On Notice for a three-week block.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XV
So... within two hours of replying to the thread where I warned him that deleting material from YMMV pages is a tempbannable office, TVGarbage went ahead and deleted almost 1.5 Kb of text from The Walking Dead (TV series)/YMMV. I've restored the deleted material and given him a week-long vacation from the wiki.

In other news, Infinite is posting messages on my private board begging me to restore the changes of his that I reverted from Horny Devils. Don't know why, it's not like he's locked out of the page or anything, unless someone else did it and I never noticed?

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XV
What's the trope for saying something that is completely accurate in such a way that nobody believes you?

For example: "Mayhap perchance, foppish that I am, I might be The Scarlet Pumpernickel?"

We don't have a page called "Bald-Faced Truth" (or one called "Bald-Faced Lie", for that matter)...

EDIT: Never mind, I found it. "Sarcastic Confession".

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XV
And it turns out, as Rob already knows, that Infinite just wanted to avoid the appearance of editwarring with me.

Is it just me, or did the spanking actually have a positive effect on him? He's actually been polite and reasonable since his ban ended.

(EDIT, after going to ATT for the first time since about 9:30 last night). Never mind that last bit. Looks like he's just lit off on Rob for disagreeing with him.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XV
Welp. Infinite decided that because he was told to calm down while in the midst of ranting at Rob that he didn't want to be part of the wiki any more. Which is his right. I promised him his account would remain unbanned (because he hadn't quite reached that point in his rant, and I was trying to de-escalate it a bit -- which I may have bungled) and his recent edits about which he felt so strongly will remain unreverted. Because we are not TVT, and we do not do That Kind of Thing.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XV
<rolls eyes> I think TVGarbage has finally gotten the idea that he will be banned for deleting YMMV material, but he's not happy with it. For near two days now he has been editing and re-editing a single message in a thread on his talk page expanding his justifications for making one of the deletions, as though he thinks that if he makes a good enough case we'll suddenly change the rules to acknowledge the irresistible force of his argument.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XV
Considering that (at the moment) that's the only page he can edit, this makes me worry whether he might be spending too much time on trope wikis.

I'll tell him what I told Infinite - if he doesn't like the current rule, he should propose changing it.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XV
Geth, I fully support the permanent ban you made earlier today.

I've just added text to "All The Tropes:How We Do Bans Around Here" to make clear that what that user did was a permaban offense.

Old text:
Quote:Some activity needs to be stopped as soon as it's identified. Doing any of these is grounds for permanent termination of editing rights without warning:

* Using the wiki to break the law

New text:

. * Posting "hate speech" as defined in Sec. 18(1) of the Public Order Act of 1986 (POA) of the United Kingdom or Articles 137(c) and 137(d) of the Dutch Criminal Code

Thanks Rob. Derogatory language and hateful slurs that are posted simply to be edgy and offensive are off project as well as utterly abhorrent and not our intention to promote. If people want to be hateful edgelords, there are other communities that will accommodate them, but ATT will not be a party to that.
RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XV
In case anybody's wondering why I have so many edits of less than a dozen bytes lately... I've been doing some cleanup of the Orphaned Pages list. I can grab a lot of "low-hanging fruit" by making a small edit to the main page of an orphaned subpage, so... lots of edits of less than a dozen bytes.

(There's even more null edits, but if I'm in the page and I see something blatant such as the first mention of the work or trope name isn't bold, I'll fix it.)

Riffing off of Bob's latest update to the wiki's History page:

Quote:After no objections were voiced by any staff or users, the moratorium on anonymous editing was extended for another month. It will continue to be debated monthly until such time as the majority of participants in those debates favor re-opening the wiki to anonymous users.

Or we get tired of asking every month and just say "you know what, let's leave it like this until somebody asks for a change."

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XV
Speaking of the History page... I don't know whether this is sufficiently notable (I know, there is no such thing as notability on ATT, but we don't want to list everything on that page), but I do know it would be horridly presumptive and egotistical if I was to add it.

July 17, 2018: Robkelk was given bureaucrat rights on the wiki, becoming the first person to go from ordinary Troper to "benevolent overlord" on All The Tropes and showing that it is possible to climb to the top of the greasy pole.

Feel free to change the wording, or just leave it off the list altogether.

Either Goo Monster or I doesn't/don't grok the idea of not starting a trope name with "The". I wouldn't mind being outvoted on this proposal, but I would like to know the reasoning behind not starting trope names with "The".
