I don't know what that was supposed to accomplish, actually. It made sense in 2008 - dropping the interest rate got people making big-ticket purchases again. This time around, no amount of cheaper (or free) money is going to get somebody to sit in an aircraft beside someone who might be contagious.
CBC Analysis: Interest rate cut for COVID-19 is like surgery with a club
tl;dr: See my quote above.
Quote:Canadian monetary policy specialist Louis-Philippe Rochon is one of those economists who worries that rate cuts now are not an effective solution to the economic problems created by the global outbreak of COVID-19.
Rochon said he knows he's part of the economic problem as he considers whether, as a diabetic, he can afford to travel to Rome next month where he is supposed to be visiting professor.
"It's a tough decision to make," he said.
But he has trouble seeing how lower interest rates will fill empty planes, replace parts cut off by factory shutdowns or convince people to go out to restaurants or theatres and feel comfortable taking public transit. Cheap money will not stop people from getting sick.
"I just don't know how reducing interest rates 50 basis points will help with the coronavirus crisis," said Rochon who believes the real solution is specific and targeted government spending. "Reducing interest rates will have no impact. No impact!"

CPAC Attendee Tests Positive for Coronavirus. For those of you not deep in politics, that's the big annual conservative conference, guest starring our American President and VP.
America is Panic-Buying Ammunition and Japanese Twitter is Really Confused
I think there's a lot of panic that isn't founded, caused by the coronavirus. Our annual influenza is still worse. But that's okay, because I think the panic is really useful for society right now. First of all, I feel like the stock market was way too high, and due for a correction. The economy is also too interconnected, and thus not resilient to disasters in any one of the major economies. This too was revealed.
The second thing is that an economic slowdown gives us something of a breather on climate. Pollution dropped quite a lot in 2008, and I expect it will again for the next year or so. I'm so desperate here I'll take anything I can get. By the time the economy gets rolling again, we can have more efficient processes to roll out -- and people will be even more interested in buying and producing local.

Again meanwhile in the Netherlands; 265 confirmed cases of COVID-19, of which 38 were hospitalized. The remainder is in home isolation. There is a total of 3 deaths, all male, all in their 80's and all with severe preexisting medical issues.
Major origins of the disease in the Netherlands appears to be people returning from holidays (a third of the patients, and in particular returnees from northern Italy which is a heavily hit region) and from transmission by patients celebrating carnival here in the Netherlands several weeks ago, which is why we're seeing a lot of cases in Brabant (south of the rivers and historically catholic).

Cases are spiking here, including a messy situation where a Doctor returning from the US turned out to be a carrier. After a day of nothing but runny noses, he got suspicious, reported his situation, but was informed he didn't meet the criteria for testing. He kept working, got more suspicious, pressed the issue, and finally got tested. Sure enough, he was positive. At which point the office for the Minister of Health leaked his details to the media and made him a scapegoat. He's coping a lot of abuse, but to say the health care industry are furious at the Minister pulling this stunt, and her refusal to take responsibility for this mess, would be understating it considerably.

I can understand why.
He did what he should've done, and the guys in charge are screwing him over it. This is a good way for ensuring that in the future medical personnel will not do what should be done and continue working without saying anything. And not just during this epidemic.

More than that, when they said he didn't met the requirements, he pushed to be tested anyway. He went above the departments expectations. The ministers defense is that they didn't tell the media his name, just where he worked, his age, gender, recent travel details and position. The fact the media figured out his name from that information isn't their fault!

And today in the U.S., a congressman was quarantined on Air Force One as the stock market fell 7%. Meanwhile, hundred of infected passengers are disembarking a cruise ship in northern California. But don't worry, Trump is going to get a deal with the coronavirus incredibly soon, believe me.

The only social program the GOP likes:
White House likely to pursue federal aid for shale companies hit by oil shock, coronavirus downturn
If you’re feeling feverish, just take two tax cuts and call your primary care physician in the morning.
Trump to Propose Payroll-Tax Cut to Combat Coronavirus Economic Damage
When the only tool you have is a hammer...

Can the US Government Legally Quarantine the Coronavirus?
BLUF: There is legal precedent that yes, they can.

We're at 34. Most of them related to Italy - but a few that aren't. Tracing is so far going well.
St Patrick's Day parade is cancelled. Trinity is closed. Dublin Comic Con is going ahead. Kaizokucon in 4 weeks is going ahead. Steve Martin tomorrow night is going to head.
And I've got a bollocks of a head-cold that's been simmering since I was last on a particular worksite (before Corana even hit the State) and it's making itself become known right as loud coughs went out of fashion.
Meanwhile the profiteering scum are out an about in force.
Or How about this for gouging?
I amn't sure whose worse - the profiteers or the eejits hamstering these things away.
I love the smell of rotaries in the morning. You know one time, I got to work early, before the rush hour. I walked through the empty carpark, I didn't see one bloody Prius or Golf. And that smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole carpark, smelled like.... ....speed.
One day they're going to ban them.

Advise in the Netherlands is that the non-medical facemasks are useless at best with the false appearance of protection being quite harmful, and that the medical facemasks are best used by medical personnel (who are most likely to get in contact with the virus) and people who are infected (who are spreading the virus whether they like it or not). As such, leave those masks alone so that the people who will actually need them have access to them. Maintaining isolation and social distancing will be sufficient protection otherwise.

I think they just answered their own question.
Never mind COVID-19, half of you aren't even washing your hands after going to the bathroom
Quote:According to the BC Centre for Disease Control, about 80 percent of common infections are spread by hand. While Tetro admits there's greater attention being paid to washing them to prevent the spread of viruses like COVID-19, it's a custom that could likely fall by the wayside once those fears subside.
"The problem is getting people to continue [washing their hands] after the virus, or the threat, has gone away," he said.

Huh? In order to stop something from going from Europe to the USA, he's going to stop movement in the opposite direction?
That ain't gonna work.
(goes and looks)
Ah. Bad headline. Not "from US to Europe", but "to US from Europe "
Never mind.
