All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XXVIII
RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XXVIII
Yeah, now that you actually point it out, that's what was bothering me. I'll give Geth time to weigh in, but I'll do that sometime tonight, I guess, if no one else beats me to it.

I just opened up Recent Changes and Biomaster has added more judgmental/prejudiced language to another trope entry on the Tumblr page. Sorry, Geth, I'm not waiting for you after all.

I'd ask about your ad-blocker's setting, but IIRC Chrome doesn't like ad-blockers. (Which is why I don't use Chrome; any browser that won't let me block ad-delivered malware is itself a security hole.)

Saw your message on Biomaster's Talk page, and added a reply letting them know we're being nice by not giving them a warning. Opinions are not facts, even if a bunch of "holy" books claim otherwise, and should not be presented as facts... especially if they're incorrect (i.e., contradicted by evidence).

How did I fail to notice that? Now I have to check just which machines I'm getting that behavior on. IIRC I hit both during my lunch-hour browsing on my work machine -- if I can reach them from my personal machine (as I can from my phone), then it's probably something configured by our IT department.

Thanks.

Tumblr is INFAMOUS for all sorts of people self-identifying as things to downright bizarre extents and pretty much becoming absolute caricatures of normal human beings. Sexuality and mental illness are two things that I can confirm have been flanderized and fetishized to a disturbing degree there, and when Tumblr cracked down on porn, many of the very people mentioned in those edits colonized Twitter (now X) and other social media platforms.

I want to admit a COI here, just to avoid accusations of bias. It's NOT the sexuality part that bothers me, but the mental illness LARPers offend me on a very personal level. I still see a therapist, and the most disgusting for me personally are the Tumblr users who self-diagnose their own mental illness and treat it like a fashion accessory, not legitimate trauma that should be treated with seriousness and concern. Given them and the sexuality/gender fetishizers have a huge overlap, I personally believe the comments have a sizable degree of truth, based on my own knowledge.

On a less potentially biased note, the actual edits appear reasonable enough, pointing out an actual trend without being overly biased, even citing cases in point and actual studies to make their point.

EDIT: Saw where it mentioned LGBT under perversion, okay, going a bit too far there. Agreed with the bit about sexuality and gender have often been flanderized to the point of parody only on Tumblr by the more bizarre users.

I added some far LESS inflammatory and toned down commentary salvaging what could be expressed while remaining neutral as possible in it's place.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XXVIII
HLIAA14YOG kept on making bad changes to disambiguation links -- he made one that suggested that Ed and Al of "Fullmetal Alchemist" have a different father in non-manga adaptations. Since we explicitly told him to stop doing this and that he was on his last chance, well, I just tempbanned him for two weeks and took his autopatrolled/automoderated membership away. Just so you know.

EDIT: We're going to want to go through his last couple days of edits and either put in the effort to confirm what's right and what's not, or just undo him wholesale.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XXVIII
Not just a couple of days -- he's been changing links to disambiguation pages for a couple of months now.

It'll be faster to bulk-undo everything he's done since Christmas, and not fret over false negatives.

EDIT: Oh, and his apology means nothing since he repeated his actions less than 24 hours after offering it. Remind me to never enter into a contract with him; he cannot be trusted.

<grimace> I suppose it might be necessary, but I don't like the idea of how many good edits we'll lose in the process.

Just a note that CirrusSearch is now enabled on our wiki. Currently, this means that suggestions in the search bar are no longer case-sensitive, and full text searches are dying with the least informative error message ever. I've already raised that issue but I'm the only tech staff awake, so, uh, enjoy the changes in behavior!

Yay! Modern search behaviour!

Is this something we can get on other Miraheze wikis now?

Eventually. I just volunteered ATT for a test because we’ve wanted it for years. The plan is to deploy CirrusSearch to everybody. It’s already deployed on WikiTide and we don’t want people to lose a feature in the merge.

Glad to see this. I hope we can get RelatedArticles to kick in too, it would give us an additional feature that would give us a leg up on TVT. We have it enabled, but it doesn't seem to be retrieving pages automatically and displaying the relevant footer tabs.
RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XXVIII
Uh-oh. This has happened more than once today: I type a page name into the search box, I select the page from the dropdown list, and instead of going to the page, I get an Internal Error and the page URL says I was searching for the page that I selected.

Don't worry, that only has a one in eight chance of happening.   mw182 doesn't know that Cirrus Search exists, because ??? -- no really Puppet should have installed it, why is it not there?  Known bug; welcome to the future.

Okay, I give up. Why is "Yandere" on Kaorin's trope list? Azumanga Daioh isn't that kind of show.

Thanks. I've removed it from the list.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XXVIII
We finally got a feature I've been wanting that should help us do something better than TVT partially working:

https://allthetropes.org/wiki/Adolf_Hitler

At the bottom of this page, I added two related article links for the page, but the automatic ability of the wiki to fetch information from the API to auto-populate related links seems to not work, for which I filed this ticket:

https://phabricator.miraheze.org/T11777

I requested the automatic function be restored, with the ability to manually override it with preferred links on a page by page basis if need be. This feature will ONLY affect all pages in the main namespace.
RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XXVIII
Er... Did we ask the tropers whether we should change the look and feel of the wiki before you did this?

Two things, we always HAD this functionality, just never used it, and we lacked CirrusSearch prior to automate the page selection for the footer article links. I had to put it on a page in the main namespace as an example since it only works in that namespace, so I couldn't do this in my personal sandbox. As for your question, that's why I did this little test, I wanted feedback before rolling it out everywhere.

The Miraheze guys plan to give us the OPTION to like Cirrusearch provide results automatically while still allowing us to override things per page if we choose manually, and we can always turn the extension OFF if need be.

So Rob, I wanted feedback on if we should make it a global feature once we get the backend fixes to make it automate the article selection for pages, and since technical limitations forced me to put it in the main namespace, I chose a test page where it works with no discernable issues (and I did an inspect element to be sure, it does not conflict with any other code we have running elsewhere on the wiki) so you guys can see what it does. It will be removed if we vote against it.

FYI, the automatic selection will choose related pages and add them to the footer BELOW the article, providing links to said related pages, providing an image if there one on the pages with information fetched via API call. We also can manually choose what pages will show up on a page-by-page basis, and that functionality is currently displayed on the test page. Also, note I added an edit reason stating this was a test to the page, and if it causes any issues during the testing period, it will be promptly removed.

Edit: I have removed the test edit in acknowledgment of your objections, instead, here is a screenshot of how it will look once activated (I used the manual selection to pick two articles for the test)

Instead, here's a link I uploaded to the wiki with a screenshot of how it looks on the footer:

https://allthetropes.org/wiki/File:Relat...s_Test.png

Note, the RelatedArticles feature can display as many articles as we choose to provide links for, default is three, the above link just shows two.
RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XXVIII
Rob, the guys at Miraheze fixed the backend issues with Related Articles, you can now see it work by default at the bottom of every page (in the footer section below the articles) picking three related articles at random from the API and providing links to them for viewers. This is a basic feature that can be disabled at any time and the links can be overridden with manually chosen ones within the wiki pages with the right syntax markup.

Given it's an integral Wikimedia extension with very active support and enhances the reader experience, I believe we should keep the default settings. That said, if you want to disable it at any time go to the below link (site admin only link, you need permissions to edit this) and change the Related Articles Description Source to "none"

https://allthetropes.org/wiki/Special:Ma...edarticles

Note: Default setting is to use API to automate the process, with manual override by users possible on a page by page basis.
RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XXVIII
Yeah, I was about to post here saying "well, it's showing up everywhere now even though we don't appear to have consensus to turn it on, who's going to enter the bug report? And this is why we don't test things in the Main namespace."

But apparently one mod decided to turn something on without asking.

We're stuck with it now.

EDIT: And this is 300 posts. New thread
