Are the spammers getting tired or something?
RE: Are the spammers getting tired or something?

Hmm. On a slight tangent...I seem to recall having dropped a link to a group of people I know to one of the articles in the forums here (I forget which one offhand), but I don't think there were enough of them to cause a surge. But they would show up as 'guests', wouldn't they? And, is there a more proper way of making referals like that than linking to the forum thread?

Yeah, since you don't have to register to read the forums, they would show up as guests unless they chose to join.

As for "proper"... um, no. A link is basically it.

...

Yeah, no. A new user whose email is "@loliporn.su" is not getting approved. Don't even need to check StopForumSpam on that one.

*snirk* I'm reminded of the amusing results I sometimes see in my spam folder. Though I don't think anything yet has topped the one going on about the 'USLA agreement'...

... what's to rant about about lifeguards? Unless maybe it's not having enough of them at public beaches and pools to cover the demand...

*snirk again* Replace 'EU' (Europe) in a document with 'US', and *don't* pay attention to just what it replaces, and see what happens.

A second try isn't going to work, either.

There's one spammer who seems to be absolutely desperate to get on the board. Very distinctive pattern -- while they use several different IPs, the account holder is always "Mike(Something)", and the email is always "mike(differentsomething)@gmail.com". Four tries to register got as far as administrator approval in the past few days, which suggests to me that I ought to strip out some of the security questions that can be answered by Googling them, and replace them with something more idiosyncratic.

Not knowing which questions are on the list right now, you could add "What books has the forum owner written?" If I recall correctly, most of the titles start with the same five-letter string... Smile

Hm. The way the security questions work, I'd have to make it "name one book" and the possible answers would be the list. It's not set up to let me test on substrings.

My sense of humor almost wonders if Mike is a 'Reverse Nigerian Prince' thing. (If you've never heard the joke, the idea is there's this prince sitting on piles of money that he can't *give* away..)
I wonder if Mike is someone who wants to legitimately use the board, but is convinced the subscription system is broken somehow. :-) Unlikely, I know.

It would be sort of funny/sad if that was the case, but no... StopForumSpam lists dozens of Mike incarnations spamming sites, all coming from the IP he signed up from.

Yeah, no. If you're really intent on trying to sneak into the forums for spamming, maybe don't use an email address that proudly proclaims you're "sarahspowerwashing" from "phoenixseomasters". Just a suggestion.

Likewise, using "Shop-1Elist" as your username somewhat defeats the purpose of slipping unnoticed past my registration process.

I love the smell of rotaries in the morning. You know one time, I got to work early, before the rush hour. I walked through the empty carpark, I didn't see one bloody Prius or Golf. And that smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole carpark, smelled like.... ....speed.

One day they're going to ban them.

Well yes, but in doing my usual lookups, everything I've found about him says he's legit, despite the email. He's not hard to find. His real name is William Chow and in at least some circles he's allegedly known as "the Godfather of Anime in North America". He's got a Patreon funding a project called "History Of Fan Anime". I'm waiting on his reply to my challenge email, and even if he doesn't reply to the challenge, I may approve him because I've found way too much proof he's a real person and not a spammer/scammer.

Ironic, huh?

Which tells me he's the guy who was originally behind Arctic Animation - fansubbers back when fansubs were distributed on VHS.

My memory's not what it was, but there is a slim chance that he and I read some of each others' posts on rec.arts.anime.misc...

Huh. That's something I didn't come across, probably because I didn't dig deeply enough. Peg and I only got into the fansubbing scene as the VHS era was ending, and didn't really keep it up with digisubs after Tomodachi and our other sources shut down.

Well. For the first time since the boards moved to my website, I'm taking the risk and approving a new user without them replying to my challenge email.

We'll see what happens. He hasn't been back since he registered at 1:37 PM EDT two days ago.

I love the spammers who are overconfident and assume you just rubberstamp new memberships -- it makes rejecting their accounts so much easier when they use emails from a domain like "ozempic-store.org".

I was not aware that businesses were gendered in Russia.

I'm guessing this one won't bother replying to the second stage of the sign-up process.

This one already failed the IPcheck at Stopforumspam.com, they don't qualify for the second stage.
