Rather than the obvious effect of turning Doug invisible, this teaches him how to cast it as a spell using the magic system of the local reality, which while nominally useless as he is almost completely unable to cast magic other than via his metagift does mean he now knows how at least a segment of local magic works as a starting point to figure out the rest if he needs to, and is quite likely to be able to teach anyone else who meets the requirements (bloodlines or mathematical ability or special meta-organs or however local magic works) how to cast it as well. If there are multiple applicable magic systems, playing it again on another day will teach him a different one.

It will fail if there is no system of magic in the current world, though exactly how far it might search across the universe as a whole before returning no result is probably limited by how far his power's internal rules will allow it to reach within the duration of the song. (Presumably if magic itself did not exist in a given universe Doug either could not go there at all, or his power would not.)
