The woman took a step. Stopped. “Is it true?” Her voice was so quiet Deniz wasn’t sure she was still speaking to them. “That you worship a god?”

“No,” Omar spoke before Deniz could. “Lord Death doesn’t allow anyone to worship him. We work for him.”

“I see.” Her head tilted her gaze down to her feet. “…is he kind? Does he forgive?”

Omar hesitated as he tried to understand the social cues in the woman’s hushed, meek, questioning. “…yeah, I guess.”

“…I see.” She dusted invisible debris from her robes as she straightened once more. “Good luck.” And she was gone.

“You don’t have to answer,” Benni had lowered her voice conspiratorially. “I don’t care what or where they are. I’m just thinking that that might the answer. All we need to do is set those same wards at my new accommodations.” Hearing how ridiculous she sounded - she couldn’t assume that whoever or whatever had set up Shibusen’s protections was still alive- she added “or at least find a place with them already active.”

Several emotions had flashed across Cam’s face. Shock, concern, astonishment. The former secretary ran the gamut of sensation before settling on a surprisingly epiphanic look.

“…that…might work,” he finally conceded. Benni had released a breath she hadn’t known she was holding, her face lighting up with a smile she couldn’t contain. “Really?” The man stroked his short beard thoughtfully.

“Yeah. Well, maybe.” He sighed. “There’s an old property a couple of kilometers away from Shibusen. Down the other side of the hill from the main street metro center.” He jerked his thumb like Benni could see through walls and to where he gestured. “I believe it’s still owned by Lord Death, but it hasn’t been used in decades. Might not be the most up to date accommodations.” His eyes came back to Benni. A finger tapped his bicep as he crossed his arms and crunched logistics.

“It’s got a pretty good commute to the school, and I think…nah, it definitely has wards that rival the DWMA’s.” His nose wrinkled. “I mean, until we get permission from the Boss I don’t even know if we should consider it. But it seems to match your discerning preferences.”

That was enough for Benni. She had to keep from sprinted as she went back to her bed to lift her laptop. It had miraculously survived her downtown battle; though the same couldn’t be said for her phone or knife. “It’s worth a shot. Worst case, I’m surfing on your couch, right?” Cam scoffed as the witch smiled at him. “What’s the address?” She had intended to email Accounting. It was possible they may still have had it on the books if it was previously used as housing by the school.

“It’s uh…” he cleared his throat and averted his eyes. An odd response that Benni chose to ignore. She intended to get her way, regardless. “I don’t really know the address, just the name. Gallows Manor.”

“Hey, John!” A voice called out.

The group turned to look as a red-headed young woman on crutches approached.

“Oh hey, Jess! Guys this is Jess she's been a regular customer. She's trying to set up a web stream for video games. Real bargain hunter, this one. She's been out of town for a week or so.”

“Oh my God that wasn't from the attack was it?” Vista asked.

“It wouldn't be that level of atrophy doesn't happen that fast. In fact, I'd say you only recently worked your way up to crutches.” Amy speculated

“Oh wow, Panacea. Yeah, I was here trying to get on the waiting list. I was in a wheelchair. A tumor damaged my spine when I was four. After the attack healers and Tinkers were offering public healing and my request was forwarded to those lists.”

“Who worked on you?” Mary asked, her curiosity piqued.

“I had to go to Boston. This lab called Vitatech said they could repair Nerve damage with this new wonder material called Eufiber.”

“What is the worst sin we have committed in your opinion?” she demanded.

Taken by surprise Alexandria and Legend both did a quick spin. They looked at where she had been in the back of their room then back again. Amos kept his eyes glued to the screen.

Surprised Danger's carefully neutral look vanished betraying confusion. Then resolve settled in on it.

“Hundreds of millions dead, a world dying by inches, hope for the future guttering? What sin could compare to releasing the Endbringers into the world.” He said with disgust.

“The what?” Doctor Mother exclaimed

“He's not lying! He thinks we did that!” Alexandria added into the mic.

“I assure you we most certainly did not!” Doctor Mother refuted.

“Oh, I assure you you most certainly did.” The Teen spat back with a sneer.

For a moment Hebert and danger glared at Doctor Mother and Contessa. The lab techs quietly exited the room deciding they wanted no part of this.

Danger's expression slowly flagged. You really didn't know? My God. Morally that makes you look better but if we're judging on competence-”

“I think we have some investigation to do," Doctor Mother announced.

“Yeah, I'd be trying to figure that shit out,” Danny added.

Danger gave a nod and both men exited. When the door closed Contessa leaned heavily on the table.

“Pathing told me we would get the better of the exchange. We'd receive. More important information but I almost wish we hadn't.” Contessa said, her head bowing under the weight of revelation.

On June 3, 2156, the Romulan fleet came into the outer sensor ranges of... T’Prel’s defense squadron.[fn27] Unlike the Tellarites, she was not fooled by bogus identify friend/foe codes. There was no way that this could be any kind of Vulcan fleet. The Itam’s (sensors) were unable to tell just how many ships were coming her way at this distance, but it was clearly more than her small force could handle. Two strains of logic entered into her brain at that time. On one hand, the cold calculus of military logic dictated that she trade space for time and abandon the Denobulans so that Vulcan strength could be preserved for the future. On the other hand, the logic of friendship and duty compelled her to do everything she could to prevent the depredation of Denobula at the hands of the Romulans. She chose the latter. Even if the defense she and her Vulcan squadron could muster was inadequate, the stain on their honor caused by abandoning Denobula to its fate was too great.[fn28] Anything she could kill in space was a one less thing the defenders on the ground would have to face.[fn29] However, if there was to be any hope of defending the planet, she would need to send one of her ships away from the battle to raise the alarm. The most logical choice for this duty was the Fourcas (the Denobulan ship attached to her squadron). She ordered the ship to proceed at maximum warp to Tellar Prime and rally its defenders here. When her captain, Blason-oovex-varatam, protested that he could not abandon his family when the fight was here, T’Prel told him that he and his crew were very likely to be the last free Denobulans anywhere in the quadrant. Blason would serve his people best by carrying that torch as long as they were able. This seemed to be enough for the Denobulan captain. The Fourcas warped away from Denobula, pursued by the Romulan battlecruiser Mace of D’Vak and two Dhael-class cruisers. It would be the last time any of the Fourcas’ crew would see Denobula Triaxa for four years.

The fall itself (CW: gore)

(Admiral) Vadis’ three legions landed at the doorstep of the presidential palace virtually unmolested, as the Vulcan 31st was scattered throughout the city.[fn45] Only a token company of Denobulan gendarmes tried, valiantly but in vain, to resist the Reman hastati as they entered the palace complex.[fn46] It did not take them long to find President Trexa, his advisors and several leading members of the Ealdormoot. Once these dignitaries were secured, a helmeted figure calling himself Colonel Lovias stepped forward and offered Trexa a choice: either let his people fight and die in months of senseless slaughter that the Romulans were assured of winning, or surrender now and spare his people that fate. When Ealdorman Kentar-valla-ducaan, scion of one of the oldest trading houses on Denobula and head of the Ealdormoot’s defense committee, told the Romulan interlocutor that he would rather die than surrender, Colonel Lovias decided to oblige him. He pulled out his disruptor pistol and shot the aging ealdor square in the chest. First, Kentar’s clothes and skin melted from his body, then his muscles and organs, and finally his skeleton, leaving a smoking pile of ash on the marble floor. The whole process took less than two seconds, but those seconds were agony. With that characteristically unsubtle demonstration out of the way, President Trexa signed Lovias’ surrender papers. About fifteen minutes later, around 1pm local Privas time, Trexa announced the world’s surrender to the Denobulan public on every audio and visual channel. He also ordered the Denobulan gendarmes to detain every armed Vulcan on the planet.
