Now I did look up the kanji for the Jurai family in TM though, which is spelled 樹雷.  The first one is a more complicated version of 木, meaning tree or trees.  The next one is 雷, thunder/lightning.  (Both are the Chinese readings; in the Japanese readings it would be ki-kaminari.)  I'm pretty sure that this is a plot related name, given the energy beams coming from the trees.
...

"I finally saw how Aeka and Sasami write their family name, Jurai," Hyoga said over dinner. "It's possible to read the kanji as 'lightning tree'."

"What, really?" Makoto asked with sudden interest. "I wonder whether we have a connection."

I know Chris Davies had the Jurai-jin of the Together-verse descending from the Jovians of the Silver Millennium. Now I wonder if that linguistic coincidence were the reason. If Chris were still around, we could ask him (her? them?).

Him. At least, when I gave Chris a cameo in DW2, he had no problem with a male character; I would presume that if I'd misgendered him he would have told me.

Just so people don't think we've forgotten about the Halloween party...

Two people reached for the same bottle of ginger ale. (Cola, while available, was behind the bar so that Belldandy wouldn't drink it by accident.)

The white glove and the black glove stopped just before they touched each other. Their wearers, "white Stig" and "black Stig", looked at each other.

Observers presumed that they made eye contact.

"Uh-oh," Rin Suzunoki muttered. "I hope whoever the white Stig is isn't a biker."

"Actually, she's the best biker I know," Sora Hasegawa replied. "Chihiro-san can beat anybody in a race."

"Lime-san can beat anybody in a race," Rin answered while tilting her head toward the black Stig.

"Uh-oh."

Without a word passing between the two Stigs, they went for their bikes.

As the ending credits to The Avengers rolled, Makoto asked, "What's shawarma?"

"I have no idea," Mikoto replied.

"I think it's a sandwich of some sort," Ami said, "but I've never had one." Everyone else was surprised that there was a sandwich that Ami hadn't tried.

Rob grinned. "We're in Ottawa. There's always a shawarma joint about two blocks from anywhere in town. There's one in the mall. Let's go get shawarma."

Ruiko insisted, "We have to see the credit cookie first."

"And then shawarma after." Rob nodded.

I just added a term to the Glossary.

Quote:Seiyuu collision
A condition where two or more different displacees have very similar voices because they were played by the same seiyuu in the Refuge reality. The term was coined by Mii Komori and Ami Mizuno, who have three and six seiyuu collisions respectively.

It's an old joke, but giving it to these people breathes new life into it.

Ritsu and Sumire had been playing, on their own, for seventeen minutes.

"Please," Nodoka begged, "make it stop..."

Mugi immediately said, "No! Something very bad happens if the drums stop!"

"What?"

Mio, trying desperately to fade into the background, replied, "Bass solo."

"It's the first Intelligent Device created in Refuge."

"Does it have a name yet?"

"Not yet."

"How about 'Raising Middle Finger'?"

"Thank you, Tomo, you may sit down now. We're going to let the Device's partner choose a name."

I mean, "Raising Hard-on" was right there, Rob. Especially the way they pronounce "raising".

I didn't want to be too obvious. Besides, the Raising/Raging mixup makes that name even worse.

Ami was helping the youngsters with their homework. "No, Chibiusa, it wasn't called the Shōchū era because everybody was drunk. The era name is written 年号, not 焼酎."

"How am I supposed to know how something's written when I've only heard it spoken?"

Apparently, "It's Pride Month, You Know What That Means" is a meme... but I never saw a meme that I didn't want to deconstruct.

"It's Pride Month, Oneesama, you know what that means."

"Huh? What? Every month is Pride Month for you, Kuroko!"

Threw away a fragment that won't support an entire story. Saved the core idea to mention as a one-line reference in another story. Also kept these lines for this thread.

"Rui-chan, just how does a twelve-year-old know what that sentence means?"

"From the Internet, Rob-oji. Duh."

Rob sighed deeply and theatrically. "I'm beginning to regret not asking Kazari to put a filter on our firewall."

"I'm thinking of putting some hanging planters in my apartment. Maybe in my bedroom."

"Makoto," Kuroko asked, "Have you ever heard the phrase 'Oh John Ringo no'?"

The taller girl looked puzzled. "Should I have?"

"I suppose not. But trust me – no hanging planters in your bedroom."

A joke that only works in Ottawa...

Mii mentioned, "Some of my classmates told me that the best French restaurants around here are in downtown Gatineau."

"Just across the border," Rob replied. "They're very French over there."

"Can we try one?"

"They do tend to be expensive... but you only live once, unless the Buddhists are right. Tonight, we dine in Hull!"

"Where are we getting the money to pay for this?"

"Oh, Washuu-chan has one of the older supercomputers in her lab doing nothing but churning out new Bitcoins."

"Really? Do we have enough wealth to buy new cars for everybody?"

"We have enough money to buy used bicycles for everybody. And that's only if Washuu-chan releases enough Bitcoins at once to depress the market. That fund isn't for everyday use."

"Oh."

"So Bobby heard about Paternity tests and gets a lock of his hair and lock of his sons and sends them both off to get tested. Big fucking no-no if that gets out."

"Anyway. I got the results back today. Proof positive that the little shit really is Bobby's son."

"Thankfully I swapped his and Jaime's sample so they wouldn't fucking blow up and kill each other when the results came out."

"Dealing with these people is like an episode of Gerry Springer with added pointy things."
