( Mike Harris got it all the time when he was Premier of Ontario. And, since education is under provincial jurisdiction here and the teachers' unions really didn't like him, there's an entire generation of people who've been taught that's the correct way to pronounce the word. So... you go down that road, there's no going back.)

Republican group cites the Dred Scott decision as a reason Kamala Harris can't be President.

I looked it up, and it seems they are conflating rather understandable birth certificate issues for her not being an actual citizen:
https://www.reuters.com/fact-check/kamal...024-08-14/
Also, read the article, they are citing the part of Dred Scott about who qualifies as a citizen to begin with, not the actual racist part, but the logic is still flawed. Harris was born in California, a US territory, and that made her an automatic citizen.
This is a really stupid line of attack to discredit her and they fail basic law.

Sometimes the perfect quip just shows up too late. In case anyone still gets a chance to use it around the water cooler a day late, I'll add it here as well as the Stupid Dialogue thread:
"Aw, they think they're people" is a cute reaction when you're watching pet videos; if it comes out of your mouth while talking politics you'd better stop and think hard about whether you're part of the problem.

Are we sure Natasha Fatale isn't him hassling another porn star?
edit: Never mind, of course it's a fictional name, it's one of the cartoon villains that hasn't invaded real life. Man, where's Eddie Valiant when you need him?
I'd even take Judge Doom at thyis point...

Show us the money.
Penn Wharton Budget Model estimates the GOP platform would add to the deficit over double what the Dem platform would.
The analysis covered tax cuts, tax increases, tariffs, the effects of tariffs on the economy, and support programs to individual (not corporate) taxpayers.
Note that His Orangeness graduated from Wharton... so if he was to call it a bad school in rebuttal, he would be insulting himself.

I'm just hoping whoever wins this time, neither side is a sore loser and we don't get any riots or other nonsense. Both Trump and Biden were in office and during both their terms the American democracy survived. If Harris wins, well and good, and to quote Patrick Henry if that happens, 'It is adopted, let us try it."
If Trump wins again, well, guess we'll need to slug down the Pepto-Bismol to gag down the bile and endure.
Either way, to quote Ulysses S. Grant's presidential campaign "Let us have peace."

Trump is running.
You think he is going to be graceful, whether he wins or loses?

You are, I regret to say, likely right, but considering he nearly got his head blown off and all the legal troubles he's had to endure since the last time his supporters got too enthused, I hope (but not counting on) he has a bit more concern for his mortality and not facing prison.
Either way, I just hope, regardless of who does win, they keep themselves in check on social media this time. Trump made a fool of himself last time and Biden to his credit had the wisdom to not use social media without some decorum and judgment. If Harris does win, I hope she continues that trend.

What an opinion piece from MSNBC that I watched earlier this evening notes is that the very public admission that yes, he did lose and he knew it, completely blows his defense that he seriously thought the election had been tampered with out of the water. Whether he intended it or not -- and we all know how well he thinks out all the implications and consequences of his actions -- it is a public admission that he deliberately attempted to subvert the 2020 election.

... I have to wonder is Ross Perot would have made such a stunningly poor transition from business to politics... though he at least was a legitimate success in business.

Based on the evidence on his previous public behaviour, I expect that's how he'll behave if he loses. His public persona isn't big on "peace".
Then again, he'll probably act like that if he wins, too.
Too bad the GOP didn't pick somebody else as their candidate...

Er... It takes a particular kind of business ineptness to bankrupt a casino. He did that twice. His father was the one with the business savvy.

Yes, I know Trump was a world-class fuckup at business before ever sprouting the wild hair that would eventually cross his ass about politics. I was talking about Ross Perot.

A Canadian view of the president-candidate debate
In case you're wondering who the article's writer is:
Quote:Alexander Panetta is a Washington-based correspondent for CBC News who has covered American politics and Canada-U.S. issues since 2013. He previously worked in Ottawa, Quebec City and internationally, reporting on politics, conflict, disaster and the Montreal Expos.
So, yeah, he has some experience.

Trump is claiming that he not only won the debate, but that he had the greatest debate ever.
Because losing hurts his precious feelings.
Which is . . . concerning.

He's always had a gigantic ego, not surprised at all.
As for the debate, I doubt this will move the needle very much. Sides are drawn up at this point. As for how it went, I found I hated both sides. Trump was his usual boorish self, and Kamala came off with a permanent sneer in her voice and the condescension was overwhelming. Ergo, not thrilled with either.

Geth, would you be able to restrain yourself in the face of Trump being his usual boorish self?
A permanent sneer and condescension is admirable restraint.

Well, being polite and respectful and showing the proper decorum has gotten us to where we are today.
I love the smell of rotaries in the morning. You know one time, I got to work early, before the rush hour. I walked through the empty carpark, I didn't see one bloody Prius or Golf. And that smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole carpark, smelled like.... ....speed.
One day they're going to ban them.
