Having put in the work, Ling Qi thought that the assignment wasn't just getting back at her for maybe intentionally phrasing her reports to exasperate Renxiang. Her liege and friend did have a point. Just as it did no good to handle all the threats for their soldiers, it didn't help their burgeoning civil service if Cai Renxiang acted as the keystone of everyday operations.

Cai Renxiang was quite satisfied with the clerks from the Gold Autumn school. With the central granary having its newly built storerooms filled with foodstuffs and the distribution system now processing efficiently, Renxiang had some plans for expanding their duties.

The room darkened. Cold, oily tendrils of qi crept across her skin, made her throat constrict. Then, black, empty eyes crept into her sight, and hanging strands of black hair tickled her neck.

She let out a breath, and tilted her head up to look at Shu Yue, who leaned over her.

"You don’t actually have to do that, do you?" she griped, taking hold of her heart rate and slowing it down manually with a small fluctuation in her qi.

"Yes," Shu Yue said agreeably. Her office flickered and wavered as her sometimes tutor vanished before reappearing in front of her desk. Long fingered, pale hands were steepled in front of their chest.

Happy April Fools, no this is not a joke believe it or not. Life's been real busy, real depressing, and just... well real. So the return to cartoon fantasy was inevitable. Mostly got inspired to come back to this after watching The Day the Earth Blew Up. If you haven't watched it already, please do, easily the best Looney Tunes movie to ever be released. And with Coyote Vs. Acme set to finally release next year I'm hoping y'all show up for that.

Upon entering the Verex System, Starfleet and Andorian ships encountered scattered resistance from the Orion Syndicate forces.(fn37) While the pirate ships outnumbered the Coalition by a factor of nearly two to one, nothing in their fleet could match the raw firepower of the Surabaya. Even if they could have, pirate ships are designed to overwhelm isolated cargo ships and pirate crews lack the discipline and coordination to overcome a combat-tested military force. Coalition forces destroyed three Orion pirate cruisers in the opening salvo and heavily damaged two more. From there, the remaining pirate captains scattered, unwilling to contend with such a naked display of force. As his forces fled the system, Lord Admiral K’Brian of House Lapis appealed to the Mistress of the Winter Constellations for aid from the other pirate clans.(fn38) He argued that the loss of the system would materially harm both slaving profits and Orion’s relations with the Romulans. Lady B’yanka Tendi denied his request, saying:

“Your blue failure is what got us into this mess. It is your responsibility to clean it up. For this failure, I have confiscated your lands, titles, and holdings on the homeworld. Witness my mercy that I do not confiscate your ship. Or your life.”(fn39)

Ling Qi glanced outside at the position of the sun. "Oh! Yes, Meng Duyi was meant to come by today."

"I will not delay your meeting with the Maker of Harmonies. We will speak again when you journey north."

"I will look forward to our lesson."

Shu Yue's head tilted, their ear left almost horizontal to their shoulder. "I do not know that you should, but it pleases me that you look ahead with clear eyes."

Their form collapsed, shadows skittering away into the corners of the room. Ling Qi was once again alone, or seemingly so, anyway.

"There isn't much reason to drive myself to distraction wondering otherwise, is there?" she wondered aloud, not expecting an answer. She didn't receive one.

The Black Knight steepled his hands. “Some things cannot be avoided, no matter how hard we try.” Green eyes glancing to Sabah, then Wekesa. “The crucial part is how we handle them.”

“I would like some clarification on that point, actually,” Masego politely interjected.

“We fall back to the walls of Ater and the other great cities. Holding the border will be a fool’s errand against this many forces and most of them have little interest in Callow, and the Wasteland is not lightly tamed.” The unspoken conclusion rang true to me. Fighting across Callow and the Wasteland would simply break more of the Empire. We already had losses enough and sieges were costly for the areas around them, often picked clean of supplies and suffering collateral damage. If we went into the field, we were liable to be flanked and picked apart as well, the enemy forces would be arriving on their own timetables, making it difficult to coordinate a defense that didn’t leave gaps or get flanked. “Ater is heavily fortified and by forcing them to assault the walls, enemy forces will run against each other. The Legions can hold if they’re as busy fighting each other as they are us.”

It was a sensible plan, but it lacked something. Before I could speak, he continued, an air of certainty growing around the conversation.

“But that only buys us time to resolve our largest issue: this will become a stronghold of Evil, harboring a powerful artifact that has loosed destruction on the world. One we lost control of. Even if we should successfully hold against the armies, bands of Heroes will infiltrate the city. Villains will come to usurp it. The Story that was brewing around Skitter has only grown worse. There are now tenfold as many reasons for outsiders to be dragged in. This is no longer in our hands.”

“That can’t be it,” Hakram rumbled from our side of the table. “The man who organized the Conquest, who rallied the Steppe. I can only assume you have a plan, sir?”

Glowing green eyes over steepled hands, both watching each of us and looking at something greater.

“Armies will fight, yes. Stories will fight too. That will bring a new and even more dangerous enemy. But the crucial part is that Creation will fight,” he elaborated, veering dangerously on monologuing. Bless Hakram for his ability to support a good rant along. “What we’ve seen with both Skitter and the Simurgh is that this other realm does not follow our laws. What’s more, with some effort, it can break them. And thanks to Catherine, we now have just a touch of that.”

Oh. Oh. If he was thinking what I thought he was, then that? That was a more dangerous road to go down than some of the roads in Marchford at night. Which wasn’t my fault, the city had been nearly trashed and I was doing my best. I could only send Robber on so many midnight walks before it started to cause collateral.

“We’ll need to play our hands near perfectly, but there is a chance. More than has ever been. Perhaps more than there ever will be.”

Amadeus smiled.
