The Quebec question will be sitting quietly for a while...
No referendum with Trump around, says PQ ahead of October election
Quote:The Parti Québécois will not hold a referendum as long as U.S. President Donald Trump remains in power, party leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon announced Tuesday morning.
In a post on X, he said he wants to avoid having the issue "hijacked by the ups and downs of American politics."
"An issue as crucial as the political future of Quebec requires conditions that allow for an informed and calm debate," St-Pierre Plamondon wrote.
He said the next government will be faced with "more than enough challenges" without calling a referendum.

Chapman’s Ice Cream pledges no price increase as Ontario company shifts away from U.S. suppliers
Quote:An Ontario ice cream company says it will replace more than 70 per cent of its American ingredients and won't increase prices for two years.
Chapman’s Ice Cream is shifting away from American suppliers as the trade dispute between Canada and the United States continues. The family-owned company also says it won't raise prices for its ice cream until March 2028.
Bringing some stability to the supply lines (in that there's no worries about arbitrary tariffs) is good, but not the only reason to do this.

“It’s crazy what this has done for businesses in this country. Almonds from Australia, are you crazy? How is that possible that we could get an even better price, plus freight, from Australia instead of the United States? So we’re finding a lot of opportunities out there.”

While the folks in the Oval Playpen move to transactional deals, Canada makes a long-term agreement with an ally who isn't (yet) in NATO.

It's election day in Quebec.
With five parties fielding candidates, there's a chance that somebody could win it with only 30% of the popular vote. (Yes, we still use FPTP in Canada.)

There's a minority government in Quebec today. And they got less than 30% of the popular vote.
Maybe, maybe Quebec will get electoral reform. Maybe. The new governing party, along with two of the other parties, campaigned on it, and the optics of this election's results are very bad.
Oh, yes... the previous party in power got zero seats. The PQ leads a minority government now.

I don't understand why a government that has 30% of the seats is considered a reason to give electoral reform. There are some countries where coalition governments are the rule, and 30% would be a good showing. Of course if it's FPTP voting, then yeah, it needs reformed. But there's nothing all that wrong with coalition governments.

If coalition governments are part of the political culture, then they can work fine. If a party with a significant minority of the popular vote fets the HNIC chair when the expectation id that having eon mrans having a mandate to push their particular agenda, well, then issues can occur. Possibly with torches and pitchforks, hopefully only metaphorically.

In case somebody missed seeing what I posted earlier.
As for a coalition government, I doubt we'll get anything so fancy and formal. The usual way minority governments work in Canada is that the governing party avoids anything at all controversial unless it needs to be addressed, in which case a deal is struck with another party where "we'll introduce your pet bill and vote for it if you vote for our bill" and there's a couple of whipped votes (vote the way the Party Whip tells you or else you get no party funding for the next election).

I guess Alberta voted Remain, in an entirely expected and predictable outcome. Initial tallies are around 23.5% in favour of independence -- if that number had been over 50%, it would have been spelled in "favor" of independence (and becoming the 51st state). If it holds up, 3 to 1 is a fairly embarrassing result. In a room with four people, just the one weird guy wants to bail on Canada. A result like that should sink the idea of secession for a generation.

But it won't, because the "leave" side was expecting to get less than 30%.
What's more worrying is the other referendum questions. The votes have been "yes" to fewer immigrants (don't know who's going to work in the bitumen sands, then), no education or health care for immigrants who don't yet have citizenship or newcomers from other parts of Canada who haven't been resident for 12 months, charging an extra fee for what services they do get, prove you're a citizen when voting, amend the Constitution (good luck with that!) to have the province appoint judges who hear federal cases, amend the Constitution to abolish the Senate, and amend the Constitution to have provincial laws override federal laws.
No health care for immigrants. I shouldn't be surprised, since Alberta charges its citizens for basic health care, specifically vaccinations.
At least the vote was "no" to opt out of federal programs but still have the federal government pay for their replacements.
