All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part IV

@Bob: Others on Orain are getting irritated as well, so that fire is still being stoked even if we don't add to it.

@Rob Kelk: Johnny Au on Wikipediocracy wanted me to pass along a thumbs up:

Thanks. Going any farther in the sorting-and-grouping would require knowledge of the films that I don't have, alas.

Okay, good news on the ATT Orain side of things:

The site crapouts have been resolved. Turns out the DNS settings for one of the servers was so hosed up it was causing the entire site go pear shaped, John has fixed that.

The Collection extension works now, to an extent. Use the 'Create a Book" feature to make the book, then try making a PDF out of that or a PediaPress printed version. Don't use the 'Download as PDF" option on the sidebar, it'll just render whatever random page it has selected at the moment. The first option will start on a random page, but you make a book with whatever you want.

Note, it renders kinda slow, but it does work now.

We have had to pay a small price in that we no longer have Cirrus Search/we've reverting instead back to the old search engine, which is slower, but a lot less of a resource drain, a price I'm willing to pay if it means all of Orain is fairly fast otherwise across the board.

The spare server will be retooled for another purpose (we're discussing that as I type this), but hopefully we can use it further optimize our service and prevent this slowdown nonsense from happening again.

Please report further issues if necessary.

Also, I have been asked not to make further statements for the time being, but our talks with the current owner of TV Tropes have been extremely pleasant and very promising, more details when I can release them, but if I were a Magic 8-Ball, I can say:

Outlook Very Good.

Um, no. We are currently the "All The 504s" wiki and nothing else. Been like that for at least a couple hours.

DAMMIT! And he just recently increased our HHVM limit too!

Leaving him another issue.

Good news guys, John is installing a load balancer, this should retard the servers from crapping out.

Hurrah!

December is a busy time for Poser/DS freebies, and the site issues are interfering with keeping that wiki current...

EDIT: I'll save the "hurran" for when it's implemented.

And I see we have a more streamlined 504 page now... Was serving it so often taxing the servers?

Good and bad news guys:

Good: Load balancer is up and running, seems to have ameliorated some of the 504s quiet a bit.

Bad: We're still getting some 504ing (though not as much apparently), John said he's going to hit up Dusti about the possibility of a third server for further hammering down the load issues to zero, said we don't have to, but if we want to chip in to get it, it would help.

Me, I just want  max performance, so I'm for it, and I'll be happy to PayPal some funds for said server, but I'd like to know how you guys feel.

It's been 504ing for least four-fifths of the time, all day today. This is not "ameliorated" - it's worse than weekdays.

(I'm typing this in between repeated refresh attempts of a wiki page so that I can edit it. I've been trying to get a simple, less-than-one-hour project done for the last five-and-a-quarter hours. Yes, I'm upset.)

Make it happen. Get rid of these damned 504s ASAP. How much?

I made our position loud and clear. For what it's worth, Dusti agrees with our position entirely and told John as much, and he's asking how much we can pay.

Update: Several people on Orain have already thrown money at this problem (me included), we now have another server, and John is currently working his butt off on fixing it.

I don't know what I'll have available to me, what with it being the Holidays and all, but at some point I'll be able to throw $100 at this -- if it'll help.

Okay, I hope this is because of fixes in progress, but my next-to-last attempt to get to the wiki's main page ended in a redirect loop error, and reloading after that got me a "404 not found - The requested URL /wiki/Main_Page was not found on this server." error.

John is suturing everything together now, had to throw together entire DNS settings and all for the new hardware real quick, but rest assured, work is still in progress.

Update; We should be fine now. Firefox users may have to purge their cookies, then log back in.

Okay, I'm calmed down now.

Orain stopped coughing up 504s a few hours ago, and I took the opportunity to finish off the task I planned to do and continue with related tasks until the sub-project was complete. (Too late to go get that haircut I wanted to get...) Should folks be interested, over the last two days the page I was working on went from http://poserdazfreebies.orain.org/w/in ... oldid=9023]this to http://poserdazfreebies.orain.org/w/in ... oldid=9273]this - much easier to find what you're looking for, no matter how you look for it.

Please thank John for the extra work.

So, what's up now? I can't even get a 504 from the site this morning, just "IE cannot display the webpage". And it was working so well for at least a few minutes last night...

Try purging your cookies and web cache.

If not, use another browser for now. Firefox worked fine after a cookie purge, (and I have no problems ATM)

The issue may be the old cookies cached for the old settings are clashing with the new server settings and the pages aren't displaying as a result.

Yeah, that did the trick. From earlier comments, it sounded like it was only necessary for Firefox (and by extension, Seamonkey and other FF-based browsers). Thanks.
Update:  1/3 to 1/2 of all attempts to submit edits result in a 504.  Sometimes it takes multiple tries to get work saved.

Cache has yet to fully refresh server side is probably why, should clear up soon (about 24 hours at most).

(I grow tired of cleaning up manually after these bot runs - and this time, there are too many to clean up manually.)
First of all, yes, they will be fixed, but since we're so technically unstable, I can't do that many jobs at a time.  Fixing the links is actually the last step in the process, which will probably happen around Thursday.  Second, you probably should never fix these manually, because it's a big waste of time.  Create content instead, and complain for a link update bot run.

I guess the good news is that I probably won't be doing any more mass renames.
I know we've all been busy lately... Any idea when you're going to get around to the cleanup on this?

Been getting intermittent 504s only on submits for the last 24 hours or so. And right now I'm on like the fifth or six submit in a row of the same page, in the hopes it'll "take".
Edit:  Looks like the submit takes, but the getting the new version of the page back is what's hanging.
Edit 2:  And as soon as I post, everything clears up again.  For the moment, at least.

The load balancer probably needs a few tweaks, I'll mention it to John.

We're having another 504 storm, starting at about 11 AM EST this morning. As before, it's only throwing the 504s on returning a page after a submit (either save or preview).
EDIT:  Argh.  No sooner do I post that than it starts throwing 504s on attempts to edit or just simply view.
