Really *weird* places for a Step...
Re: I can just see it...

Sounds appropriately weird. I'll have to toss that onto the list of "to get" stuff.
Thanks for the recommendation, although I don't see how I could turn it into a Step just yet.

well, I've never heard of Rizel before this either, but unless her origin is covered more definatively than the explanation post made it sound, Doug could be involved in getting her set loose-with-friendly-watchdogs instead of stuck in a lab complex until managing to escape like your stereotypical clone/engineered character type. It might not be worthy of a full step, but perhaps as a flashback in the Evangelion step when he learns about Rei.
Heh, he's Looney Tunes, and you may not know it, but he's a pargon of humanist philosophy and thought. Why, he's so famous for it, there's a half dozen worlds where he's known by the title, "Da Liberator!"

Actually, Rizel is... well... let's just say that she's *NEVER* stuck in a lab. As of the first episode, she's living with her 'husband', over his *VERY* vocal protests (and his parents' protests, which were *QUICKLY* silenced with Government money).

That's what I thought you'd meant by the explanation - and my thought was that Doug could have popped in and been instrumental in persueding the responsible parties to let her out into the world to have normal kid like experiences, if only by relating a few horror stories of things that have happened around/because of geneies who were kept locked away during the Teenage Rebellion years and developed a hatred of their captors. C'mon, he's a superhero, he has to have seen that plot at least once.

I'm going to reserve judgment until I see this thing. (And please, no offers of digisubs until I upgrade my system... I've got too many CD-ROMS stacked up next to the tower as it is.)

The Darkstalkers cartoon. Young mage Harry Grimorie.
The Street Fighter cartoon.
Pokemon.
Bionic 6. This one might not be so weird. Superheroes using bionics. Although, Doug might want to slap around the Bandroids sometimes, due to their songs.

If the source material were not so hard to take, I might consider this. I've seen a lot of good stuff done in Pokemon, but before I write any of my own, I'd want to be more familiar with it -- and what I have seen has made me cringe so thoroughly that I don't want to watch any more of it.

Not weird at all -- Doug's used to bionics, even bionics good enough to match or beat a meta. There's a comment or implication to that effect in chapter one, in the scene where he meets the street gang in the alley.

RE Pokemon - I've seen Narutaru suggested lately as a fansubbed show that's like a more intelligent Pokemon, but haven't seen it myself. By the way, did you ever get to check out Rizelmine?
For that matter, did anyone get my 'da liberator' joke? Because right now, I can't imagine how it was supposed to be funny... 'deliberator,' right, but... Maybe the philosophy and thought references?

I think that's Fatal Fury? you mean Bob. The Streetfighter cartoon (Streetfighter IIV is the actual title I think) is more or less on the same lines as the animated movie - Ken and Ryu going to interesting places, meeting interesting people and beating the spit out of them (or, y'know, the other way round). It's quite musing in that since it's a 26-episode series there's a lot more plot and character development. You get to see Ryu invent the Hadoken for example, and Ken developing the Shoryuken.

As to Pokemon, you could go the manga route. The one with the main character named Red.
It is a lot more serious that the anime. But, I can understand why you don't want to go that way.
Well, you could go with Monster Rancher instead. It kept going forward with its plot and did have a definite end.

there are multiple 'street fighter the movie' that I've seen. My favorite has an animate Chun Li bouncing around her hotel room vs. Vega in her undies, to the tunes of Gravity Kills.

As I've only seen the odd pic of that, do you mean the ones where Misty/Kasumi has a figure like Fay Valentine and a dress sense to match, plus her fighting togs have almost less fabric in them than the X-Men's pre-Neo Psylock's black buttfloss number.

No, I'm talking about the manga where Koga, Surge, & Sabrina are members of Team Rocket. Blaine was a member and left. Team Rocket manages to catche Articuno, Zapdos, & Moltres. Red catches Mewtwo and gives to Blaine to teach it and allow Blaine to redeem himself.
The 2nd arc with Yellow had the heroes and Team Rocket face off against the Elite 4. Bruno was under some sort of mind control. Lance the Dragon Master wanted to kill all humans so Pokemon could live in peace.
And don't forget Red's super Eevee. It could freely switch between Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, and ordinnary Eevee.

And here's a world that even Doug would have problems with:

I thought I'd heard a mention of it over at EPU. Judging from the name, though, it sounds like it falls right into the big hole between my two periods of animation watching.

Yeah, except for Disney stuff -- when it didn't obviously suck -- my animation watching years were mainly 1965ish to 1976ish, and then 1992ish to present.

Papuwa. I *REALLY* think it would qualify as 'weird'.

I mean, between the gangster-turned-mercenary-turned-maid, the talking anthropomorphic fish, the sentient poisonous mushroom who keeps trying to get people to eat him (literally and pathetically), the drumming otter, the various mercenary/military groups, the islanders' meal habits... and so on...- Aleh, who is currently working on a Ranma fic in which Kunou decides the only way to beat the 'Foul Sorcerer' is to learn his ways... and is currently running around wearing a black helmet and calling himself 'Darth Kunou'.

Granted, it's unlikely he'll ever encounter the same song twice, given how people sing about their unique individual circumstances. But just imagine the lock of horror and panic on his face when he realizes where he is...

Yup, pretty much. Except that as you point out, most songs won't be repeated (although there are the inevitable reprises, I'm sure), and Doug's power usually analyzes and catalyzes on the first listening, doing nothing until the second and following times. So he'd be mostly safe.

Oh, yeah. Bigtime.
Hm. There was a book series, written by Craig Shaw Gardner, I think, called the "Cineverse Saga", in which the multiverse is actually made up of universes based on B-movies and Saturday afternoon serials. As I recall, the musical worlds were the most loathed and feared by those who travelled the multiverse...

Not Weird in the "totally off the wall" sense...

The Yu-Gi-Oh! manga has recently ended in Japan, making it no longer "live" and therefore eligible for a Step...
Amusing bits are that Duel Monsters really *is* that popular in Yugi's world, *and* that important, and what those Millenium Items are really made of.
Little use for actual combat, but much fun finding songs that will enhance Sangnoir's card-playing ability. (Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler" has a good chorus, but the eponymous gambler *dies* at the end.) Not to mention coming up with a theme deck for him.

I'd like to see the look on Doug's face when he finds out just who and what Mokona is from Magic Knights Rayearth.
^_^
Spoiler warning: Highlight to read.
Mokona is the creator of both Earth and Cephiro. In other words Mokona is the creator of all.

Doug would get at least part of an idea the first time Mokona wandered into view while he was using magesight. Then, the next time they were alone together, he'd say something like "Got a question for you, and you can drop the act..."
But yeah, the first time he sees the bunnyball's aura he's going to be rubbing his eyes and saying, "What the hell...?"

I've tried to watch Yu-Gi-Oh! and quite honestly, I couldn't. It affects me much like Pokemon does -- which is to say, I'd rather switch to Jerry Springer or Dr. Phil. (Bleccch.) Now, the manga may be radically different, and not bug the hell out of me, but I have no idea. I suppose I ought to look for it next time I'm in Borders or Kinokuniya, as I seem to recall spotting an English-language version.

Well, not everything in the lyrics has to contribute to the resultant power, you know. Besides, the song is about what the singer learned from the gambler, not really about the gambler himself...

Yu-Gi-Oh! is a strange beast, really. (and I can track back my association with it through a friend several years before it became popular here). On one hand, it has a seriously deep history tracing back to Ancient Egypt, and features beings being called forth that are, essentially, Gods(and lesser beings of Power, as well, but the three primary ones are GODS, not god-monsters, god-beasts or whatever inanity the dub is trying to inflict on the unsuspecting public, serving the will of the Pharaoh. On the other, a lot of it is couched within a marketing ploy for the card game. That same lot of it, coincidentally, is where the story really deepens and expands into something really spectacular. Above all, it is a story about a boy growing up. IN peculiar circumstances, to be sure. (I mean, he's the reincarnation of a millenia-dead pharaoh, who just happens to be bonded to the soul of that same Pharaoh.)
As for the dub. Bleh. I'm not surprised you weren't able to watch it for long, Bob. THat is an atrocious nightmare. One of the few televised anime where they do their damnedest to keep the plot as complete as possible while cutting out any and all references to death of any sort. (despite the utter improbablity of some of their contrivances).
Example:
Original: Yami no Yuugi duels Pandora, a stage magician. The two of them are shackled at the legs, and every time the life point count goes down, a buzzsaw comes closer to cutting them off at the ankles.
Dub: Yugi duels Arkana, a stage magician. And, instead of a buzzsaw, it is a Dark Energy Disc that will send their mind to the shadow realm.
Original: Yami no Yuugi & Seto Kaiba duel Mask of Light and Mask of Darkness. When each life counter hits zero, the glass platform they are standing on will shatter, sending whoever down thirty stories to their death.
Dub: Yugi & Kaiba duel Umbra & Lumis, and if they lose, their 'Shadow Boxes' will send them spiralling into the shadow realm.
(note: Umbra loses, and somehow is saved from being lost in the 'Shadow Realm' forever by a PARACHUTE. Yes, friends, parachutes can save you from damnation in a nebulous mystical realm. For only nine easy payments of 9999.99.)
The Shadow Realm business is a creation of the dub. Pure and simple. Only those holding Sennen Items can invoke a Game of Darkness(and that only serves to make the game have higher stakes. Generally some punishment is enacted by the wielder of the sennen item when he wins.)
Ranting aside, it would be an interesting world to see Doug in. The game literally is -widespread- in this world. Damn near everyone plays Duel Monsters(some with a better degree of skill than others). And later, when the Battle City arc gets into full swing(arguably the best part of the entire show/manga), situations arise that Doug would be uniquely suited to dealing with. (armies of mind-controlled goons, all targeting Yuugi because Malik wants to Kill the Pharaoh. It would be interesting to see how he reacts to these people and the utter intricacies of the game. (for a relatively straightforward game, it is also very complex, but easy to grasp, unlike, say, Magic or Vampire).
As for theme decks. I don't know that Doug would really like that method of combat. It tends to be very hands off, as things go. You order them around, and they do the fighting for you.
The important thing to note, though, is that in certain instances, they become more than just holograms. Any Game of Darkness means the monsters are REAL. (including God Cards, who come with whole sets of special abilities(though these are only applicable in the anime/manga, as the God Cards are just for show in the game).
That aside, as I said, there's a lot of interesting backstory to what is going on, but it often gets smooshed behind the merchandising, sadly.
