Applying this to Fenspace... Well, I'm sure handwavium can create some obstacles that act like the Air Race pylons - apparently solid until they're touched, then fall apart without harming the craft that hit them. Take a look at what I found while I was looking for info on these.
I remember the Futura houses well -- a local bank used one as a branch a couple miles from where I grew up, and my father took my sister and me to watch the
Sikorsky skycrane deliver it. Mm. That would have to have been somewhere between 1968 and 1972, by my best guess. After a few years I guess it turned out not to be a profitable branch, so they closed it and it sat around decaying for ten or fifteen years after that.
