RFC: Splitting Fenspace
RFC: Splitting Fenspace
#1
I was just musing over the difficulty of looking for a story in the forum this morning, and I considered the possibility of splitting Fenspace into two forums, with the new one defined as a story archive -- when a story thread is definitively closed or over, it gets moved there for ease of finding it later.
Thoughts, comments, brickbats?

We do need an archive, but I don't think a forum is the right format for it. There is an archive webpage, though I can't recall the URL at the moment, but it it's not kept up to date enough maybe we should consider a wiki for archiving.

I'm with Catty, an archive site (or wiki, or whatever) would make more sense than splitting up the forum.

I suspect Catty's thinking of my story archive page, which I haven't updated for a couple of months... Sorry about that.
Edit: I've just moved the page - it's now here. The above link still works, but that page won't be updated.
Is that the approach we want to take to the page? I liked it when I set it up, but the style doesn't lend itself to stories that don't have specific dates mentioned in them or stories that span large amounts of time.

In all honesty, I prefer a wiki approach, at least for archiving purposes. That way we could set up an archive where multiple users had posting/editing access instead of having to rely on you or me or Bob or whoever having the spare time to raid the board, HTMLize the stories and then stick them in a plain archive.
As for figuring out the approach to the archive, we can burn that bridge when we get there.---

If we're going to go the wiki route, I'd suggest limiting updates to people with accounts, rather than making it world-writeable - this will cut down on the vandalism. (There's always vandalism-through-security-holes, but that can't be helped.) Somebody would have to be in charge of handing out accounts (now that captcha has been defeated, we can't do that by a 'bot), but that's an easier job than updating the site.
Whatever solution we come up with, feel free to raid the work I've already done. No sense in doing it twice, right?

I agree with the Wiki idea whole heartedly. In addition to cutting down on clutter in the forums, it will also lend a greater sense of permanence to what we already have. Also great for Newbies who need to get up to speed or people who've been out of the loop for a while (like me for example).

I HATE wikis... mainly because it's damn hard to make an offline version, without actually going to every damn page. But, I will bow to majority opinion on this matter... just don't expect me to be over active with it beyond the bare minimum to get my stories in something like their proper place. I have the revisions I mentioned finished, BTW, but am not on the right machine to post them right now - klater today, if all goes well, you should see 1c (Being Green) and Xx (A Time to Die) - the latter has no numbers because it is Season Three material at the soonest, and hence goes in the "noncanonical/futre history" section.

*cough*
On the subject of setting up an archive wiki... you all know that I don't take unilateral action when it comes to topics up for debate. Which means that if somebody randomly went to fnord.sandwich.net/fenwiki/ and logged in using the administrative account (user:admin, with an 8-character password that should be ridiculously easy to guess), created their own user account, and then begin filling in blanks, well...
And then if we finally got around to deciding who's going to host the permanent archive, and that person just happened to get a zipped copy of that same wiki in his or her inbox, all ready to be uploaded to the new host, that could hardly be considered unilateral, could it?
Of course, this is all just idle speculation. [Image: wink.gif] ---

I think you need to firebomb them again.
On a side note is that huge table really nessecary on every page? Stick it in an about us page or something.
Also as to archiving, as long as all the stories are linked to from the stories page it should be near trivial to automate.

Agreed -- that needs to be separate. It makes it look like some error has set every page in the wiki to the same thing.

I hate to admit it, but that huge table is only supposed to be in the top page 'character listing', and is not supposed to be anywhere else..
and I'm not sure what happened.
for some reason, my connectivity to sandwich.net is slow enough that I'm not going to be able to participate at all in the fenwiki - it looks like I won't even be able to browse, more's the pity.
Edit: Not expecting anyone to do anything about this. Initial diagnostics indicate that someone between here and there is either a knucklehead, or a dick, and I don't have the time/energy/money to figure out who, much less fix the situation.Wire Geek - Burning the weak and trampling the dead since 1979Wire Geek - Burning the weak and trampling the dead since 1979

You hit the "create page" link for the site notice, not the character listing. No big thing, it happens.
(Why do I have the site notice enabled? Well, I was thinking that we might be able to get the banner rotation script running in there at some point. We'll see.)---

Somebody else will have to do that, as at least on my side it was blind groping that made it work.

nope, no banners for me. I'll send you the php tags to do it properly, ezboard doesn't allow me to post them.

Well, I'm sure some of us can add your material to the wiki until you work out your connectivity problems. (How's that going, by the way?)
Speaking of the wiki, I've just populated the Ship Registry page with a list of the ships that seem to be important, with links to pagestubs (except for the Ptichka and Stellvia, which have full entries). I've no doubt missed some ships that really should be there...
Edit: And I've now populated some of those pages with information from the Ship Registry. (And a few other places, for the Fateful Lightning's entry.) And now I know I missed some important ships - Millie's listed, but Viaorr isn't, for example.

Problem The Second: How in the hell do I present a Semicolon in the middle of a title, link, box, etc, etc, etc, without Wiki parsing it into a link thingy and munging my shit?

cheap & fast fix: Instead of [[Outrigger 2: The Sequel], use [[outrigger_2|Outrigger 2: The Sequel]. The | seperates the text out from the link, like a tag.---
