the purpose behind it eludes me. The bot places several strings of hex with links that don't work. It is obviously incrementing but I'm not sure what (if anything) it is supposed to mean.-Terry

Official word: since the posts were made via an unregistered user, they can't do much about punishing the individual or account involved. The best they can suggest is changing the boards' security to prohibit posting by unregistered users. What do people feel about that?

I have no problem with it. How much hassle is it to sign up with EZ? How many people regularly post without an account here anyway? Not like it would change any of the regular's habits much. And if someone who is new _really_ feels like posting, it's 5 minutes extra to register.
If it will slamming one more door in a spammer's/abuser's face, all the more reason to do it. -Logan

Okay, that does it.
Registered users only can post messages from now on. Everyone can still read.
I might relax this in a couple of months, but for the moment, I'm going to be strict. I turned on the admin option to see IP addresses for posters, and it looked like a botnet -- no two IPs the same. (I'd be very surprised if we were the only board affected.)
And besides, it'll help those of you who accidentally find themselves posting as an unregistered user.
