The Broken One

As Seraph reached his apartment, he noticed one thing wrong. The door was upside-down.

"At least she remembered to put it back in the frame." He muttered as he man handled it out of the
way.

It hand been two weeks since he… for lack of a better word, got stuck with the newest Knight Saber, Gir,
normally one of the other Sabers you take in the new girl, till they could support themselves, but everyone was busy with the build up to Christmas, so Seraph
learned to deal with it, even if Gir cost him a small fortune in food and repair bills.

As he walked to the kitchen counter Seraph slowly became aware of an increasingly foul odour, looking around
he spotted two sets of what he hoped was muddy footprints, he followed them to the bathroom.

Water pooled at the base of the bathroom door, gingerly not knowing what to expect Seraph knocked at the
door.

"Gir, what are you doing?" he called

Slowly the door opened as Gir stepped out wearing nothing but couple of bubbles.

"Nooothing" she replied sheepishly

"Gir?" seraph said as he quickly turned away

"Yes?"

"remember the conversation about decency?"

"Wha? oh right."

Ducking back in she grabbed a towel and wrapped it round herself.

"Now Gir. Who where you talking to?" Seraph asked

"I mades a new friend!" she proclaimed proudly "I was running around the sewer fighting zombie
men when I saw something so I cased after it and I finally caught up to it and it turned out to be a saber and the I talked to her for a bit, well I talked and
she listened, and the I took her up to the surface but kinda scared her so I had to talk some more then I brought her
here and I realized that we smelled funny so we had a bath."

"Okay, let me see if I've got this, you were in the sewer?"

"Yes"

"You saw something?"

"Yes"

"It was a saber?"

"Yes"

"And you brought her here?"

"Yep"

Carefully stepping around Gir, he opened the door to the bathroom. Sitting next to a suit of busted power
armour, was a young woman draped in a towel. She looked at Seraph and scuttled behind the power armour, the first thing
that came to his attention was her face, large stiches ran across it, kneeling down seraph carefully extended his hand to her.

"Hello there, um, hey Gir" Seraph turned to the door. "what's her name."

Gir just shrugged. "I calls her broken cuz her armour and face looked kinda broke."

Shaking his head disapprovingly seraph turned back to the girl. "Uh do you have a name miss?" he
asked.

The girl looked him in the eyes. "Lazzzz-urein" she hiss

"Lazuren? Would you like some thing to eat?" he asked

"Foo-oud?" Her voice sound odd as if she couldn't get the timing of the words right

"I'll let you two get dressed, while I whip something up."

Gir nodded enthusiastically as Seraph head to the kitchen.

El'Pookyrnthzl Amachef, Lieutenant to the Dark Lord of forseeable consequences, Subguardian of the Gates of Mild Despair, Assistant to the secretary of
minor stumbles, crashed through the brush in Perez Park, swearing and cursing as the thorny branches ripped at his tunic and wings.

"Blessed loving GOD BLESSED Motherrespecting THORNS! Aieeeeeee!" As a particularily vicious snag tore a hole in his wing, Pooky ripped free of his
tangle and fell flat on his face in a puddle. His sputtering curses turned into burbling incoherencies by the muddy water, Pooky levered himself to his feet.
Glaring about him, the stocky imp squatted and burst upwards, clearing the underbrush and canopy with a frenzied fluttering of his tattered wings. As he
crested the tops of the trees, Pooky spun in place, searching for his war party.

The trees waved gently in the breeze, and the sun glistened off the water in the distance.

Pooky turned slowly around, searching for even a hint of the confusion and chaos that would accompany the squad of demonic troopers he had been assigned to.

The wet squelching of the Hydra came low and quiet, peaceful against the whispering of the leaves.

Pooky yanked on his long, pointed ears, screaming in fury, and an explosion echoed across the Park, coming from the boathouse. His stocky body shot forward,
wings pumping madly, as Pooky shot through the air towards the battle. As he thumped to the pier outside of the boathouse, he crowed in triumph, whipping his
bow out and readying an arrow, prepared for anything and searching for the demon overlord in charge of his team. As he looked back to see if perhaps the
overlord was behind him, Pooky was caught by a massive explosion, which threw him the short distance across this arm of the lake, and face first into a
conveniently placed tree.

Cut to black.

"Why are you on the floor?"

"nt' sure. Locked up and crashed when I got back from ITF. Can't move a damn thing except my right ankle. Sylia?"

"Yes. Do you have an emergency unlock?"

"........"

"Mag?"

"I've.. never needed one before."

"Hmm."

"And noone else knows it."

"Mmm-hmm."

"Fuck."

"...."

"Well.. I guess you, of all people, are trustworthy. Are you in your suit?"

"No, Mag. I only stopped by to drop off something for Emet."

"You have weird hours, Sylia. You were on that task force too."

"Well.. yes."

"...OK. There's a shillelagh clipped in the footwell of the reception desk. It's in front of the shotgun, behind the laser pistols."

"OK, I have it."

"Double-tap me on the left shoulder, once on the right, and then.. *mumble*"

"Mag?"

"And then once in the crotch."

"......"

"It actually ended up being neccesary, I assure you."

*tunk-tunk tonk twak*

"you're gonna have to hit a lot harder than that, I'm afraid."

*THONK THONK KLONK TWONK*

With a firecracker pop, explosive bolts blew Mag out of his seized armor, leaving him facedown in a pile of armor plating and a worn, but well cared for,
bodystocking, similar to many of Sylia's earlier designs. Groaning, the compromised tanker tried to climb to his feet, succeeding only when Sylia hauled
him upright by main force. Mag took a hesitant step, and managed to stagger over to the reception chair, collapsing into it with a pained grunt, and
laboriously hamming out a command on the console. Behind Sylia, the entry teleporter died with a sigh.

"Sorry, Sylia." Mag said, his voice a massively different honeyed tenor. "I just shut off the entry teleporter and all the zone
teleporters."

"I understand. It's a little late, but would you care for a mask, at least?"

"No, as you say, the cat's out of the bag." Mag shrugged, then stretched, groaning at the cascade of cracks and pops this elicited. Rising from
the chair, he hobbled back to the pile of his armor, which Sylia was considering with her dispassionate stare. "bet ya a dollar a reboot is all that it
needs."

"No bet." Sylia stepped back and made a 'your move' gesture. "I think I see what happened."

Mag knelt and reached into the pile of parts, stabbing a finger into the guts of one of the plates. The pile quivered, then reorganized itself into a humanoid
shape, empty and glistening. Mag sighed. Rising again to his feet, Mag keyed a short sequence into his vambrace computer. The armor responded by splitting in
half along the left side, and Mag waved Sylia in. With a shared grunt of effort, they levered the suit to it's feet, and Mag slid into it. As the armor
clamshelled shut around him, Mag sighed again, his voice changing from the strange tenor back to his customary gravelly baritone. "And reboot is
complete.. overall performance down by 12% due to scoring and etching. Let's see the culprit."

Mag knelt, and Sylia followed suit. As she slid a finger across the floor, purple sparks arced into her fingertip. Mag repeated the manuever, and the sparks
were significantly thicker and stronger.

"Nictus energy and.. Sand?" Sylia said, a pinch of the offending material crackling purple between her fingers.

"I got hit with enough negative energy to pan-fry a water buffalo, during that ITF run."

Sylia scowled. "Yes, I know I couldn't keep Romulus occupied 100% of the time."

"Not your fault. You were operating outside your role. I'm just.. gah. Who'd have thought that the strobe rate that kind of barrage caused in my
primary field would allow sand in?"

"Not to put too fine a point on it, Mag.. but you should have."

"True." Mag rose to his feet again and moved stiffly back to the entry console. With a swiftly deepening hum, the entry teleporter renewed its
customary lightshow. "I can't assume with something this important, Sylia, so I have to ask. Will you keep my identity in confidence?"

"I will." Sylia said, her face solem. "I'd expect you to do the same for any of my girls after all."

"Indeed."

The two considered each other for long moments, the silence stretching into an uncomfortable pitch. Mag broke first, rising abruptly from the reception desk
again. "I'm going to go home and shut this down for the night. Probably be a couple days making repairs after this debacle."

"Once you're done, feel free to call me if you need a sanity check on the design. I'll expect the same help, of course."

"I... " Mag stood behind the desk, working his jaw. "I would be grateful, Sylia. Thank you."

"You're welcome. Besides, how else am I going to get the sort of raw defensive capability you have?"

"Or how am I supposed to get the damage output you have... I see." Mag walked out to face Sylia in the lobby, the light from the entry portal
coruscating across her face. "It's a deal, then." Mag said, extending his hand. Sylia nodded and took his hand, shaking it once, confidently, and
turned to go towards the locker room. Mag turned as well, heading into the teleporter bay and blinking out on his way to King's Row.

Bwa?

Maybe I'm just dense this morning. But...

So Mag is significantly less stocky than he looks. I guess?

Is the face in the helmet actually not his true face? I assume he's a male (tenor voice).

Is the armor not actually tech, but magic?

Am I reading more into this than there really is?

I feel like I'm staring straight at something obvious but not "getting" it.

(I guess it makes sense that anyone with base editing permissions also has the authorization to shut down the teleporters. Lora'Lai would be a bit
concerned about that. That's a potential security risk.)

I dunno, I would be extremely confident that any of the Top Three (ignoring Terr for the moment, heh) would have the ability to remotely start the teleporters
back up again.

That said.

Why, oh god why, am I suddenly struck by the mental image of a _female_ Mag? I know, I played Metroid too often... but, still.

Because it's Anime Trope #7, maybe? Although usually, when a writer wants to make it obvious of a gender change by voice alone they talk about
contraltos or sopranos, not tenors. I suspect that Mag is younger or slimmer than the armor and his reputation indicate.

Tech - I would assume you don't reboot magic.

Quote:Am I reading more into this than there really is?

Possibly - the upshot is that Mag is not whom he appears to be, and it's a secret identity thing. Sylia, to date, is the only person that's seen his 'Real Face', though there's currently no plans to make this anything sinister.

Quote:Maybe I'm just dense this morning. But...

Note the post time - 2am on the night before work, it turns out, is not a good time to be trying to lace dialog together. Especially when that's not your forte.

Quote:So Mag is significantly less stocky than he looks. I guess?
Is the face in the helmet actually not his true face? I assume he's a male (tenor voice).

Circle gets the square on both of them - Mag's a big guy, sure, but the lion's share of his bulk is the armor, which it turns out, will hold a lot of similarities to Sylia's earlier work. The full facial mask is a simple holographic projection, trivial with Paragon level tech.

I do believe that @Atlantea, which would by necessity include Lora'Lai, Cyberman, etc, have the base teleporter vet power - for RP purposes, this could be considered issue to the leadership of The Legendary, and functioning as a sideling to the medicom teleporter system (to prevent lockouts and etc)

Quote:Why, oh god why, am I suddenly struck by the mental image of a _female_ Mag? I know, I played Metroid too often... but, still.

Just remember that the next time altitis strikes. And I debated making it a female Mag, for about half a second. but.. no.

to reiterate the gist of my replies to Logan - this bit of drabble is gonna get ground down and rebuilt, since it turns out that o-dark-hundred when operating on too little sleep is not a good time to do dialog-heavy fic. Who Knew?

this will remain up as a warning, though ; )

This is...interesting, now. Because, alright, I mean, we actually do know a fair bit about Mag's supposed backstory. He's supposed to be an engineer that did some work on what's now become the Crey Cryo Tank armour, that he's married. I believe an earlier bit had his wife convincing him to get back in the saddle, as it were - to go 'superhero' again after at least a period of time out of the suit.
Now...some of that has been conveyed, in previous stuff, by way of interior monologue or third person omniscient, so there's presumably truth in there somewhere. What's missing from that picture, then? His age could be one thing, as noted it's been suggested he's an older guy. Or is what's been previously established...now known to be deliberate deception of some sort?
Or is everything that's been established more or less true, it's just there's some really big additional detail that's a huge zinger?
...as an aside, I note that almost everyone, when using the base as a setting in stories, talks about teleporter systems and so on, so forth. Which is obviously consistent with how it's used. I do believe, though, that Atlantea's concept for the base - as reflected by the occasional skylight and aircraft hangar room we previously had - is the upper levels of a Steel Canyon skyscraper.
Which could be a really cool fact to throw out, somehow. I did have a story project in draft form which was supposed to make use of that skyscraper setting, but in the end, I never got round to it. I might need to see if I can salvage bits and pieces of that for snippet form. High rise and vertical and a building beneath has a fair bit of dramatic potential, I've always thought...

...I never knew that, that's _awesome_. Given the extensive use of teleporters in-game, this doesn't change anything, really.. but it _adds_ a lot of possibility.

That was indeed my concept - upper floor of a skyscraper. (Yup - I was thinking "Baxter Building".) The only thing I would amend - I thought of it as
being in Founders Falls at first. But Steel Canyon would make more sense.

The alternative concept I had bandied around was to have the base be like a stationary TARDIS. Literally. Thus, whatever is needed in terms of configuration
and space is just coded into the computer and expressed in the base's dimensional space. (Why do you think we need such an ENORMOUS computer center and
power plant anyway?)

But I've always preferred the idea that the place exists in a specific space, time and location. Going TARDIS is... well... too easy. And doesn't give
you the rationale for fights punching through walls and out over the streets, etc. Or the tread of robots and density enhanced individuals to annoy the
downstairs neighbours. ^_^

The only issue I have with the skyscraper concept is that now we have SUCH a HUGE sprawling layout. What building could we possibly use that could reasonably
contain all that? (Yes, yes, I know. The mission instance system doesn't seem to have any qualms about placing the interior of an enormous warehouse behind
the door of a building that couldn't possibly hold it all. I prefer to hold myself to a higher standard of verisimilitude.)

I need to double check, but I think there are two buildings in Atlas that actually have a footprint big enough to justify putting our base in them. And if
Steel Canyon makes sense, I'd say Atlas make as much or even more sense. (Central location, not dangerous for junior members etc.)

But yes. Story-wise and all, I like the idea of nailing down the actual physical location of the base. As soon as I get home from work tonight I'll check
out Atlas and Steel Canyon and let you know (with pictures) which candidates I have in mind.

Dark Seraph looked at the papers sprawled across his desk, his latest case had taken him to Croatoa, and it
was going nowhere fast. Sighing he pushed so notes away.

"What the hell am I supposed to do with no leads?" He asked the world in general, suddenly he felt a
cold chill run up his arms, looking at his gauntlets, he saw that they where covered in a thin layer of ice. "What do you want?" He snapped

Seraph shuddered, he always disliked it when the entity in his gauntlets talked to him.

"I'll give you old, but you're not my dear friend."

"I wish. Now what do you want?"

Seraph just glared at the gauntlets.

"Shut up." Seraph wish he knew what caused his gauntlets to gain a mind of their own, it probably
had something to do with all the minor artifacts he helped the Midnighter with. Now he had a disembodied voice to go with the two teenage cyborgs that shared
him home.

Seraphs head shot up. "Of course, the stone
circle, how could I have missed it?"

Seraph ran
to the door hoping the get their in time.

It didn't take long to reach the circle, quickly jumping through, Seraph made short work of the red cap
guards on the other side, as he collected the hostages, they informed him that the red caps spell could be turned back inwards, destroying the red caps and
save Salamanca, as the mages set up Seraph saw several red caps heading towards them. He could feel
that spell behind him building in strength, the stone circle was amplifying it to an insane level, and the red caps planed to fire it at Salamanca. Seraph
watched the last one drop as the spell entered its final phase he could seethe intercut lines piled on top of one and another.

The psychic cry ripped across his mind, as the
whole spell blew apart.

When he came to, he realized that he was in the
hospital, made sense considering how bad his ribs hurt, looking around he spotted the rooms only other occupant, an elfin woman who looked vary familiar for
some reason.

"Well good morning sleepy head, wondered how
long you'd be out." She exclaimed cheerfully.

"I'm sorry, do I know you?" Seraph
asked

"We'll that no way to talk to a dear old
friend now is it?" she replied

Realization stole over Seraphs face

"… Oh no. no no no, how the HELL did you…. Is
that even… WHAT GOING ON?"

"Well, it seams that when the spell blew, it
gave me the power to shape a new body, though I wish I didn't base the breast off the women you hang around with."

The woman grabbed her self and gave them a good
jiggle.

"Bit on the big side for my likening, but
rather fun."

Seraph put his head in his hands, "do you
even have a name?" he asked

"Oh yes and a hero ID look." She handed
over a card seraph carefully took it as if he expected it to explode, the name on it read 'Sera-chan' looking up Seraph asked

"Sera-chan?"

"Weeelll my full name is
Sera'tunor'chan'elcont, but it was a little long, so I abbreviated it, but do you know what the fun bit is?"

"Theirs a fun bit?"

"OHH yes, you see when making my new body, I
had to us a genetic template, you."

"WHAT!"

"It gets better."

"I don't want to know."

"Oh yes you do, see, because I used you as a
template, I am genetically speaking, your sister."

"Shoot me now."

"I did have trouble explaining it to Gir and
Laz, but I think their happy with their new aunty."

The color ran from Seraphs face
"Aunty?"

"Well your like a father to them, so
yes."

Just when Seraph though the universe was finished
screwing him around, it threw something new his way.

I measured out the dimensions of the base with Dark Seraph's help, then went out to find the buildings that I thought had the biggest
"footprint".

The Legendary base is wider across than any building in the game. Hell, it's bigger than the Vanguard Base in the Rikti Warzone.

Right. Okay. So we ignore it to a degree like the game ignores geometry issues for a lot of things.

Still, there are a few buildings that look like they could be big enough to house a base the size of the Legendary. If you fudge things as much as the game
normally does.

Here's the main candidate.

A building to the southeast of
the Atlas Statue in Atlas Park.

The front steps and main
entrance.

The view from that
entrance.

Another shot from City
Hall.

This building has a twin on the west side of Atlas on the border with the warehouse district.

There's an even bigger version of this type of building just to the east of the tram in Kings Row. It's essentially two of these buildings mated
together with atriums open to the sky in the middle.

Anyway, that's what I've found. Comments?

Hey! Hey now! You're picking on Katy's condo building! *grin* (Er. The one in the screenshots, not the icky one.)

(As it happens, that _is_ the building I had decided best suited the High-Rise Condo Dweller -- lovely plumage, that bird -- but it's not like it can't
house both. Which makes it kind of funnier, actually; not only does Katy _go to school_ with some of her SG mates without realizing it, she _lives downstairs
from them as well_!)

I wish they'd add the CoT-map-style instant portals to the base designer. We could solve the problem easily, that way -- those are how you move between
'floors'. Plus it'd be cool.

I like the Atlas building, and just to compound things for Katy, I could make that the location of Evangelia's home, too -- which has always been in Atlas but never specifically located.

I take it that nothing in Steel was remotely suitable?

Well, no. Not really. Unless you want to completely "Tardis" it. Even the buildings I pictured aren't actually big enough really. But
they're closer than anything else.

If you DO want to follow the in-game caveat of "this building can't actually fit this office in here, but we're going to ignore that", then
by all means, there's plenty of nice looking towers in Steel that would do just fine.

Edit: Of course if you want to say the base is underground, then all this is moot anyway. You can place it anywhere. Not like there's no precedent for all manner of
things to be underground in Paragon City... (of course that means the skylights... aren't. Fiberoptics bringing light down from the surface?)

Ever since a map glitch showed Ms. Liberty directly above the teleport bay, I've always assumed the Legendary base was underground myself. When you
consider the fact you have established teleportational technology and the base editing software, excavating that much earth wouldn't be much of a problem.

...of course, I imagine there's an elevator passing straight through the base from City Hall to the Secret Command Bunker, but what have you.
