Need suggestions
Need suggestions

I've got a need in several different Steps for a song that'll let Doug refine/melt/extract metal, with refine/extract being more operative than "melt". Anyone have any suggestions?

Hm.
You load sixteen tons, and whaddaya get,
Another day older and deeper in debt...

Depending on what parts of the song trip what parts of Doug's subconscious, this may work... but he may also end up with a fairly large bill.--

The only thing I thought of was Judas Priest's Painkiller (ONly one line about boiling metal, but it's very prominent when you hear it) which sems more likely to be either a combat simalcrum (Maybe THIS one could work for something like a Doberman buma?) or an instant-Iron-Man effect.
Quote:
Faster than a bullet
Terrifying scream
Enraged and full of anger
Hes half man and half machine
Rides the metal monster
Breathing smoke and fire
Closing in with vengeance soaring high
He is the painkiller
This is the painkiller
Planets devastated
Mankinds on its knees
A saviour comes from out the skies
In answer to their pleas
Through boiling clouds of thunder
Blasting bolts of steel
Evils going under deadly wheels
He is the painkiller
This is the painkiller
Faster than a lazer bullet
Louder than an atom bomb
Chromium plated boiling metal
Brighter than a thousand suns
Flying high on rapture
Stronger free and brave
Nevermore encaptured
Theyve been brought back from the grave
With mankind ressurrected
Forever to survive
Returns from armageddon to the skies
He is the painkiller
This is the painkiller
Wings of steel painkiller
Deadly wheels painkiller

Hm. Not quite -- the song's more about the mining, and coal mining at that, as I recall.

Mmmmmm... no, not quite what I had in mind.
I think a song that in general was about purifying, improving or refining (anything) would be usable, but I think I'd prefer it if metal were in it if only as a metaphor.

Well, Val Davis has one that talks about being the steel in the blacksmith's forge, but I think that's a little late in the process for what you have in mind. Besides, according to the Sword Forum Magazine article Nathan linked to a while back the whole thing about zillions of folds and sprk-spitting hot making the best swords as in fact false, despite the mythology. So... still thinking.

Might this be something covered by a song created on Warrior's World and not this one? Sparked by new songwriters trying to get in the business by triggering Doug's metatalent?

That'd be cheating.
It quite possibly could, at least in a real worldbuilding sense, but picking up real songs to go with the images is at least half the fun of Colonel Sagnoir's character.
Right, Bob?

Precisely.
Oh, and please note, I'm not looking for a swordmaking song. I'm looking for a song that could, say, turn iron ore into pig iron ingots. Again, purifying, refining, extracting -- simple melting as a last resort, but I can do that with any fire song, basically -- this is what I'm looking for.

Hmm. Got a possible one for you, maybe. It's called 'Soul of the Steel', and it talks a bit about refining/working of steel, the uses of it, and the like. Trying desperately to find the actual LYRICS. If nothing else comes up, I'll find the tape it's on, and transcribe them as soon as I can. It might take a few days, though.

First, thoguh based on just the title and being repeated as a chorus since I don't speak enough (any) Japanese to actually understand the rest of the yrics, would be Guitar Vader's Heavy Metal Collector (which is easygoing alternative/pop, not metal). The best song that's literally about refinement that I can find is titled Mountain Dew and only attributed as "Irish Traditional" - It's more likely to let Doug turn water into whiskey though, which while useful for medicinial purposes and handy for getting in good with Urd is not particularly useful for extracting metal. Looking for "irish" on your file sharing app of choice should turn up any number of similar numbers, I imagine. Lenny Kravitz's Dig In might help with the actual getting-it-out-of-the-ground part... Taking the concept of fixing or stripping away flaws/the extranous lets REO Speedwagon's Roll With the Changes and Rammstein's Stripped (yes, it's in English) hang around on the edges...
And, of course, Magic Toenail by Brak and the Cartoon Planet Band (which Doug might have picked up on spec because the album is titled "Modern Music for Swinging Superheroes") is so general that it could do practically anything.
- CD I have a magic toenail/I keep it on my foot/It's always there to rescue me/when something goes kaput...SERVO: Loook *deeeeply* into my eyes... Tell me, what do you see?

Looks like I'm going to be busy this weekend. Since we're heading into Princeton tonight by Peggy's fiat, I guess I'll be digging through bins at the Princeton Record Exchange searching for some of these titles...
Thanks, folks.

Yeah, Google doesn't help much there, although I've managed to find out who wrote/sings it: someone named B.J. Willinger; and it's a filksong.

bet ya it'd work damn sweet on sand, too. Doesn't matter what the exact temperature in which sand would melt into stable glass is, the song specifies that that is the temperature which will be established.

Well, if you don't mind a Disney song and having the song work as what the characters singing it do....
Hi Ho, Hi Ho
It's off to work we go.

The song sung by the Seven Dwarfs. Summons seven dwarfs to quickly mine a cave or mountain(probably including man-made ones such as garbage heaps) for extracting whatver...
For refining, melting and smithing, I'm at a loss for now.

No, that would be Paul Simon:
No I would not give you false hope
On this strange and mournful day
But the mother and child reu-nion
Is only a motion away, oh, little darling of mine.
I can't for the life of me
Remember a sadder day
I know they say let it be
But it just don't work out that way
And the course of a lifetime runs
Over and over again
No I would not give you false hope
On this strange and mournful day
But the mother and child reu-nion
Is only a motion away, oh, little darling of mine.
I just can't believe it's so,
and though it seems strange to say
I never been laid so low
In such a mysterious way
And the course of a lifetime runs
Over and over again
But I would not give you false hope
On this strange and mournful day
When the mother and child reu-nion
Is only a motion away,
Oh, oh the mother and child reunion
Is only a motion away
Oh the mother and child reu-nion
Is only a moment away
