Interesting you should mention that song. I've got an omake written on that theme, set at the end of chapter 11. Only I used "Walk The Dinosaur" by Was (Not Was)...
-- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak.
Zankoku no Tenshi no Teize. The opening to Shin Seiki Evangelion. I don't know just what it would do with Doug's metatalent -- although I have a few ideas -- but I'm pretty sure that Doug wouldn't want any of the effects that it'd have...

Be warned.
That song is addictive. Also, if Angelfire yanks you around on it, let me know. I can find a way to get it to you. (Heck, it's my site, after all. ^_-) Ja Ne! Slacker Quote:Oh that's easy - think the end of Lawnmover Man - every phone in Doug's area of effect rings all of a sudden. If the phone is answered there's nobody on the other end, but once you put the phone back down it just rings again... Quote:Too bad Offsides Drunkard's Walk Forum Moderator and Prereader At Large
It's funny you should post this, as I got my hands on a copy of it last Saturday, and Friday night I burned it to a new CD (along with a lot of other stuff). And I think I know where you heard of it... ("Minako, STOP SINGING IT!")
Can you say "audio crack", boys and girls? Peggy was already trying to sing the Japanese lyrics halfway through the first time she heard it... -- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak.
Oh, great. Slacker, I'm going to have to HURT you...
-- Sucrose Octanitrate. Proof positive that with sufficient motivation, you can make anything explode.
I... I feel so *LOVED*!
^_^ Ja Ne! Slacker
Well, you could always give Akane more of a role in your story... although Ranma's new costume is definitely cute.
-- Sucrose Octanitrate. Proof positive that with sufficient motivation, you can make anything explode. Quote:Huh? Okay, I definitely missed something here... -- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak. Quote:Missed this one in all the Mini Moni stuff afterwards... Actually, the way I read "Cruel Angel's Thesis" is that it's a classic "become a hero against overwhelming odds" song of the kind that we see so often as themes for various anime. It's only in the context of the show that we see it for what it is -- a red herring intended to mislead the viewer about Shinji's role and future (along with the opening animation -- I mean, really, a determined-looking Shinji turning to the future with the wind of a thousand cliches blowing through his hair?). Ahem. Anyway, Doug would likely use the song sans knowledge of the context, and in that case, it probably won't do anything because except for the bit about growing wings, it's entirely too vague to inspire anything. -- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak. Quote:It's an ongoing thing between me, Slacker, and John Biles, about the appropriate role for Akane in a Ranma-centric 'fic. John tends to turn her into a thug, I object to it, and Slacker... well, it's a long story. -- Sucrose Octanitrate. Proof positive that with sufficient motivation, you can make anything explode.
Ah. Okay.
-- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak.
Edit: Err... Accidental doublepost.
Err... actually, that *IS* one way to interpret the song... but, then again, remember a few *OTHER* things... "Zankoku na Tenshi no Teize"... Thesis of the Merciless Angel. Heck, the opening is 'Like a merciless angel..."
"Zankoku" isn't just "merciless." It's flat-out "cruel."
(Don't mess with me. I have five J-E dictionaries and a ten-pound kanji guide.) So, "Like a cruel angel, young boy, become a legend..." (for NXE, strip out "cruel" and substitute "smartass.") --Sam "And what have we learned about Aztecs? Well, nothing really."
*Shrug*. I was going by the 'official' translation used in the subs. Yet another complaint about American translations, I guess...
Weird, Aleh. Our DVDs translate it as "cruel angel", too. Maybe they changed their translation between the tapes and the DVD release?
-- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak.
It's quite possible. It's also possible that they changed it from one tape to another or from one DVD to another.
Hmmm.
I don't know why they changed it back... I do know that the reason for the "tweaked" translation was to make it scan to the Japanese rhythm. "Za-n ko-ku na te-n-shi no yo-o-ni..." "Like an angel that has no sense of mercy..." You can sing along with that version, whereas the Strict Accuracy translation has nowhere near enough syllables. I respect their decision for the sake of art, I just think one should also be aware of the "real" meaning of the lyrics. --Sam "Down here I'm considered the apotheosis of cool."
Makes sense. Still, I prefer accuracy in translations; I don't approve of the change.
Quote:Just as a point of reference, I have an "official" translation in a file as part of my DW-Eva materials; here are the first two relevant points in the lyrics: Like a cruel angel, young boy, become the legend!...The cruel angel's thesiswill soon take flight through the window, with surging, hot pathos,if you betray your memories.Embracing this sky [universe] and shining, young boy, become the legend! I agree, the "angel with out mercy" thing must have been done solely for the sake of the scansion. -- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak.
Agreed. On another note...
Pajama Jama Da, the third opening to Urusei Yatsura. Misfire, anyone? Really bad misfire, at that...
Well, I just emailed off a copy of Elvira's (unreleased) song, "Trick or Treat". Should be in his mailbox any second now.
Maybe with a little luck, it'll inspire a few thoughts. Meantime, here's a thought I had.. Aqua's Cartoon Heroes has already been discussed elsewhere. But it occured to me that it MIGHT generate powers in OTHER people, just as Genesis' "Invisible Touch" did for Lisa. Doug, with a crowd of the armored infantry the Warriors use for support, uses the song, and gets a crowd of temporary superheros. Just a thought. Ed. |
