Songs For The Loon and the Ladies From Avalon
Songs For The Loon and the Ladies From Avalon
#1
The Storyman (2006), written by Chris de Burgh.
Lyrics:
I lived my life in the words of a Storyman,
Watched my dreams from the years gone by.
Heard my voice in the songs of a Storyman,
Always by my side, always by my side . . .
I saw him first in a castle by candlelight,
Turning round with a golden key.
I heard a train far away . . . and a whistle blew
Like a baby's cry.  'Twas like a baby's cry.
Ravens stood on the walls of Jerusalem.
Sailors danced at the Borderline.
Light a fire on the road to the Ferryman.
Emotions running high . . . in the summertime.
Take me back to the places I've never been!
Take me back to another time . . .!
Take me back to a world I have never seen
Only in my mind!  Only in my mind!
Late last night I met up with a lady-love,
Dressed in red; didn't say goodbye!
Carry me to the last time I showed her what
Tender hands can do . . . and I'll be missing you!
Take me back to the places I've never been!
Take me back to another time . . .!
Take me back to a world I have never seen
Only in my mind!  Only in my mind . . .!
Follow the light that's shining on to where we will be going!
Up to Heaven, Paradise, or to the Heart Divine!
It’s in the echoes of a child, waiting for the journey,
The spirit of one world!
Oh, take me back to the places I've never been!
Take me back to another time . . .!
Take me back to a world I have never seen
Only in my mind!  Only in my mind . . .!
I lived my life in the words of a Storyman . . .
Power and effects: Has the ability to allow Doug to link into someone's mind so he can view recent history (as witness what he was able to see thru Inada Mizuho's eyes when she drew him into her dimension to save him from some Big, Ugly Critters who wished to kill him).

In The Army Now (1981), by Rob and Ferdi Bolland, covered by Status Quo (1986 version)
Lyrics:
A vacation in a foreign land,
Uncle Sam does the best he can.
You're in the army now.
Oh!  Oh!  You're in the army . . . now.
Now you remember what the draftman said:
"Nothing to do all day but stay in bed."
You're in the army now.
Oh!  Oh!  You're in the army . . . now.
You'll be the hero of the neighbourhood.
Nobody knows that you left for good.
You're in the army now.
Oh!  Oh!  You're in the army . . . now.
Smiling faces as you wait to land,
But once you get there, no one gives a damn!
You're in the army now.
Oh!  Oh!  You're in the army . . . now.
Hand grenades flying over your head . . .!
Missiles flying over your head!
If you want to survive, get out of bed!
You're in the army now.
Oh!  Oh!  You're in the army . . . now.
Shots ring out in the dead of night!
The sergeant calls, "Stand up and fight!"
You're in the army now.
Oh!  Oh!  You're in the army . . . now.
You've got your orders:  "Better shoot on sight."
Your finger's on the trigger,
But it don't seem right!
You're in the army now.
Oh!  Oh!  You're in the army . . . now.
You're in the army now.
Oh!  Oh!  You're in the army . . . now.
Night is falling and you just can't see.
Is this illusion or reality?
You're in the army now.
Oh!  Oh!  You're in the army . . . in the army, now.
You're in the army now
Oh!  Oh!  You're in the army . . . now.
Oh!  Oh!  You're in the army . . . in the army, now . . .
Oh!  Oh . . .!
Power and effects:  Allows Doug to learn all military traditions in whatever universe he happens to be in.
Limitations:  His powers will automatically default to allow him to learn American military traditions if there is a version of his homeland in the dimension he is using this song in.

The Tower (1975), by Chris de Burgh.
Lyrics:
A great lord came walking through the forest
One morning with a weapon in his hand.
Rich was his castle, he lacked for nothing,
But killing was his plan.
When a white bird flew by, she fell from the sky.
Nothing was found, only blood on the ground.
She was gone . . .
Cursing his fortune,
He turned to the forest to kill once again.
Standing before him was a lovely young woman
With her hand hung in pain.
When he saw her, his eyes were filled with desire.
He said, "I must have her!  She must be mine!
She will be mine . . . "
He offered her silver, he offered her gold,
But she threw it on the ground.
He fell to his knees and he begged her,
"Oh, please, come with me!
What you wish will be found."
She said, "Sire, I'll go if you put up your bow
And spare these creatures.  Leave them in peace.
You have no need . . . "
But her words were lost in the wind.
His eyes were fixed on a queen.
And all he saw was a woman
And all she was, was a dream.
Oh, oh, ah . . .!
All he saw was a woman
And all she was . . . was a dream.
He took her and bound her with ropes tied around her
To his castle he did ride.
In the wood was a bower where stood an an old tower
And he threw her deep inside.
Then the birds left the sky and a terrible cry
Brought thunder and lightning and rain falling down.
Tears on the ground . . .
All through the days on her face he would gaze
For she was lovely as the spring.
No words would she speak but "Leave them in peace"
And some sad lament she would sing.
Oh, one day, by the door at the window he saw
A single white feather lying on the floor.
She was there no more . . .
Now that great lord is dying,
His cold heart is crying for the love of the girl.
For many an hour he has wept on the tower
For she meant more than the world.
And once in the sky, a white bird flew by.
He lifted his hands and he cried out in pain,
"Come back again . . . "
But his words were lost in the wind.
His castle was built upon sand.
And all he has is a memory
And all he yearns is her hand.
Oh, oh, ah . . .!
All he has is this memory
And all he yearns is her hand . . .
Power and effects:  Allows Doug to empathically attack an opponent – this is best used against people who are arrogant or believe too much in their cause – to force said target to experience what the results of his/her hubris will lead to.  Dependant of the level of hubris involved, the effects would be devastating if not potentially drive the target to suicide.

Everywhere I Go (2010) by Chris de Burgh
Lyrics:
Everywhere I go,
Everywhere I go
I see an image of her face.
She talks to me,
She talks to me
In a thousand ways.
Everyone I know,
Everyone I know
Is calling on the telephone.
"Are you okay?
Are you alright,
'Cause you're never at home?"
Well I couldn't be better!
I found my way!
She is an open door
To a brand new day!
Everywhere I go
I see her face again.
Everywhere I look
I see her smile and wave.
Everywhere I hear
Her voice is calling.
This time, I finally opened my eyes
To a beautiful angel!
Oh, who's been caring for me
Like a mother for a child!
Everywhere I go,
Everywhere I go
I see the shadow of a light.
It shines on me,
It shines on me from another time.
So many dark days
And lonely nights.
Until she found the way
To change my life!
Everywhere I go
I see her face again.
Everywhere I look
I see her smile and wave.
Everywhere I hear
Her voice is calling.
This time, I finally opened my eyes!
Everywhere I go
I see her face again.
(Everywhere I go)
Everywhere I look
I see her smile and wave.
(Everywhere I look)
Everywhere I hear
Her voice is calling!
This time, I finally opened my eyes
To my beautiful angel!
Oh, who's been caring for me
Like a mother for her child.
Everywhere I go!
This time, I finally opened my eyes . . .
Everywhere I go . . .
Powers and effects:  This will be Doug's gate song out of the universe of Phoenix From the Ashes.

I obviously won't argue anything you use in your story, Fred.  Just a couple comments.
Quote:Allows Doug to learn all military traditions in whatever universe he happens to be in.
Mm.  Very useful.  I've got a place or two where I could employ this effect.
Quote:Allows Doug to empathically attack an opponent
Not the only song of that type he has...  one of these days I need to put Alanis Morrisette's "You Ought To Know" up "on-screen".

Hear that thunder rolling till it seems to split the sky?
That's every ship in Grayson's Navy taking up the cry-

NO QUARTER!!!

I'll check it out.
BTW, quick question:  Would Chris de Burgh be what he is in Doug's universe?  I'm curious.

Another Possible Gate Song

Hi'way Songs (1972) by Gordon Lightfoot
Lyrics:
When I walk the hill so high

Around the town where I was born.

New York seems so far away

Though I was there just yesterday.

I have played on my guitar

In coffeehouses, hall, and bars.

Everyone that I call friend

Knows they will not be forgot.

Trains and planes and rented cars
.

Singers, saints, and other starts.

I suspect them every one.

They'll never change;

It's too much fun!

Just for now I'd like to rest

In the shade of a maple tree.

To the blue Canadian sky,

I'll say a prayer for the world out there!

When I stand on my own sod,

It feels so good to be home, by God!

The winter wind has turned my head

But I always came up warm somehow!

Bottles, beads and cigarettes

And lovers that I ain't found yet.

Pickin' with a friend till dawn

And singing all of those hi'way songs.

Just for now I'd like to rest

In the shade of a maple tree.

To the blue Canadian sky,

I'll say a
prayer for the world out there!

When I walk the hill so high

Around the town where I was born.

New York seems so far away

Though I was there just yesterday.

I would travel all my life

If loneliness was not the price.

While headin' north across that line is

The only time I'm flyin' . . .

If I may suggest, unless you've already picked out the song that got him into that world, there's a song by Heart with lyrics referring to going "back where I belong" and going home.  Also, until I actually checked the lyrics, the part that reads "gonna go down with the sun" always sounded to me like "gonna go there with a song."  If the Loon hears the same mondegreen, it might well strike him as particularly appropriate.  However, the title....

Back to Avalon (1993)
Songwriters: Ann Wilson, Nancy Wilson, Kit Haine

Forgive me I can't stay here anymore
I'm leaving with the tide
This evening another breeze blew round my door and stirred me up inside
I'm breaking out of this tired old spell
I braved it out long and so well
And the phoenix flies straight and high back to Avalon
Now I'm on my way back where I belong, gonna go down with the sun
Back to Avalon.
Where I'm going all my demons disappear
I'm leaving them behind
I'm traveling way up on the atmosphere cause I made up my mind.
Gonna find my love
Gonna find my life, gonna look them so deep in the eye
And the phoenix flies straight and high back to Avalon
Now I'm on my way back where I belong
Gonna go down with the sun
Back to Avalon.
Nobody knows what's inside my head or down this road
Oh I know I'm going home
And the phoenix flies straight and high back to Avalon
Now I'm on my way back where I belong
Gonna go down with the sun
And the phoenix flies straight and high back to Avalon
Now I'm on my way back where I belong
Gonna go down with the sun, back to Avalon.

I don't know enough about Chris de Burgh's career to say "no", and Warriors' World has considerably more successful recording artists in common with our time line than is probably realistic, so sure.
