Looking For A Little Input
04-24-2009, 06:51 PM
(This post was last modified: 10-13-2017, 07:59 AM by Bob Schroeck.)
This is somewhat connected to a future DW story, which is why I'm putting it here. I'm looking for semirecognizable
spells/incantations/oaths from various sources -- literary, anime, etc. For example, I've already collected the following:
Quote: In Life's name and for Life's sake, I say that I will use the Art for nothing but the service of that Life. I will guard growth and ease pain. I
will fight to preserve what grows and lives well in its own way; and I will change no object or creature unless its growth and life, or that of the system of
which it is part, are threatened. To these ends, in the practice of my Art, I will put aside fear for courage, and death for life, when it is right to do so
-- till the Universe's end.
-- Duane, Diane. So You Want To Be A Wizard. San Diego: Magic Carpet Books / Harcourt, (c)1983, p. 34.
In brightest day, in darkest night
No evil shall escape my sight
Let those who worship evil's might
Beware my power -- Green Lantern's Light!
I am the one who has been given a mission.
Under the contract, release those powers unto me.
Wind to the sky, stars to the heavens
And the unyielding soul...
To this heart!
Magic to these hands!
Raging Heart, Set Up!
-- Nanoha
All things extant in this world,
Gods of Heaven, Gods of Earth,
Let everything be as it should be.
(x3 repetitions)
Thus shall it be!
-- Abenobashi
I'm just wondering if anyone might know of anything else similar that I might add to this.
Thanks!
-- Bob

By the POWER OF GREYSKULL!

For the HONOR OF GREYSKULL!
--She-Ra
In loudest din, In hush profound
My ears hear evil's slightest sound
Let those who toll out evil's knell
BEWARE MY POWER, THE F SHARP BELL!

And more is sought.

And the differing versions of the Jedi code:
Old Republic version:
Emotion, yet peace.
Ignorance, yet knowledge.
Passion, yet serenity.
Chaos, yet harmony.
Death, yet the Force.
Yoda-era version:
There is no emotion, there is peace.
There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.
There is no passion, there is serenity.
There is no chaos, there is harmony.
There is no death, there is the Force.Cheesy Luke Skywalker version:
Jedi are the guardians of peace in the galaxy.
Jedi use their powers to defend and to protect.
Jedi respect all life, in any form.
Jedi serve others rather than ruling over them, for the good of the galaxy.
Jedi seek to improve themselves through knowledge and training. And we can't do those without the Sith mantra:
Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
The Force shall free me.

Wasn't there an speech/incantation required for Utena to draw her sword from Anthy?

If I recall, Anthy started with the incantation:
"Rose of the noble castle,
power of Dios that sleeps within me.
Heed your master and come forth..."
And Utena ended it with
"Grant me the power... to bring the world revolution!"

To follow your decree,
To serve you in utmost loyalty-
This is my pledge.

from below. We seek not to be born on the same day, in the same month and in the same year. We merely hope to die on the same day, in the same month and in the
same year. May the gods of heaven and earth attest to what is in our hearts. If we should ever do anything to betray our friendship, may the gods in heaven
strike us dead.

This one's kinda dangerous, as it's part of a self-sacrificing ritual. It is a part of The Song of the Twelve, an ancient sealing ritual performed by whales to prevent the ultimate big-bad from running amock the ocean floors. The ritual prefers a young whale-wizard...
Not old enough to love as yet,
but old enough to die, indeed–
the death-fear bites my throat and heart
fanged cousin to the Pale One’s breed–
But past the fear lies life for them,
perhaps for me; and, past my dread,
past lost of Mastery and life,
the Sea shall yet give up Her dead!
Lone Power, I accept your gift!
But take my gift of equal worth:
I take Death with me, out of time,
and make of it a path, a birth!
Let the teeth come! As they tear me,
they tear your ancient hate for aye–
so rage, proud Power! Fail again,
and see my blood teach death to die!

Last lines of an incantation used while destroying a demon, in The Black Mountains, second book of Saberhagen's Empire of the East:
"His name is not any more.
His children are not.
He existeth no more.
Nor his kindred.
He existeth not, nor his record;
He existeth not, nor his heir.
His egg cannot grow.
Nor is his seed raised.
It is dead.
And his spirit, and his shadow, and his magic."
Makes for one hell of a damnatio memoriae.

You could try looking up mystically oriented comic characters like Dr Strange, Dr Fate, the Demon Etrigan, ect.

I guess I should note that what I'm looking for are passages that are kind of emblematic. Some of these are pretty much perfect for what I want them for -- if I end up doing it.
Thanks everyone.

This hand of mine glows with an awesome power.
Its burning grip tells me to defeat you!
Take this! My love! My anger!
AND ALL MY SORROW!
SHINING FINGER!
-- Domon Kasshu, 'Mobile Fighter G Gundam'
In the name of God, impure souls of the living dead shall be banished into eternal Damnation. Amen.
-- Hellsing Organization (Royal Order of Protestant Knights), 'Hellsing'
I am invincible!
There is no one who can defeat my Shadow Skill!
My one single blow has no equal!
-- Elle Ragu, 'Shadow Skill'
...
Yes, I know that last one isn't very good. But I remember it because of the TV series. Those lines are always recited as the heroine performs an epic smackdown. Y'get the idea, right? Everything seems to stop as she does her power-up sequence and says her thing. Total genre convention, yes?
The kicker, though, comes when we're introduced to a new villain of the week. We're told he's incredibly powerful. How powerful?
Elle leaps into the air. "I AM INVINCI---"
G punches her in the face.
"I AM INVINCIBLE! THERE IS NO ONE WHO CAN DEFEAT MY SHAD---"
*KAPOW!* G punches her again.
Elle o_O;;; "He can interrupt my Shadow Skill technique? Impossible! WHAT IS THIS?!!!!"

Possibly from the wrong side of the playing field:
"Ancient Spirits of Evil
Transform This Decayed Body
Into Mumm-Ra
THE EVERLIVING!"
Given that it's Doug, the various permutations of "Abracadabra" and "Hocus Pocus" from a particular Bugs Bunny cartoon might be appropriate.

What, just now? I thought we got silly years ago.
But as long as we're silly...
Prepare for trouble!
Make it double!

To unite all peoples within our nation
To denounce the evils of truth and love
To extend our reach to the stars above

Surrender now, or prepare to fight!
