New Summer 07 Animes worth watching.
04-10-2007, 11:12 AM
Claymore:
Bad-ass. Creepy half-human chick with a broad sword, what's not to like?
Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann:
new gainax series, with all that implies ( more gunbuster/FLCL than eva)
Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpuchou:
Super Powered Teenagers protecting their city from evil.
Except evil usually manages to wrack up quite a body count before they take it down.
Sailor moon this is not.
Giniro no Olynssis:
Confusing but has some potential.
Any more i've missed?

El Cazador de la Bruja:
Flighty gunwoman is wanted for a murder she doesn't remember. Should appeal to folks who liked Madlax.
Idol Master Xenoglossia:
Evangelion clone, with Cute Girls Doing Stupid Things (TM). But it's from Sunrise (Dirty Pair, Cowboy Bebop, etc.)...
Edit: And one I somehow missed...
Oh Edo Rocket:
In a time before the Meiji reformation when luxury is forbidden, a fireworks maker (by definition, an illegal occupation) is asked by a stranger to make a sky rocket big enough to fly her to the moon.

Looking at our Harem Gilligan's Isle's cast.... from the Starchild studio website:
Ninja Main Girl
Miko "Kasumi/Belldandy"
Miko Tsundere
Ninja Rival
Ninja Megane
Ninja Loli
Goofball Male lead
And... definitely a moe character design.

Pluses:
Lovely animation
Interesting lead character
Real tactics!
Minuses:
Fantasy isn't so much my thing.
Horror is the antithesis of my thing.
Overall:
Enh.

Claymore is no more a horror anime than Bleach is. Certainly there are monsters, but they exist solely for the main character to kill.

Thats true of most monster stories where the protagonists can fight back. XD
Like Hellsing for example... the whole purpose of a normal vampire or monsters is for Alucard to continue pulling back layer after layer of bad-assery for the audience to enjoy. _______________________________
We're definitely playing this game wrong. I thought Vampire was supposed to be a game of personal horror, not about ninja airstrikes
at night.

I can't believe no one's mentioned "Romeo and the terrorist codenamed: Juliet" or as Gonzo likes to call it Romeo x Juliet.
fansub's out now, too.

Another one is the Murder Princess OVA - skilled sword swinging bounty hunter switches bodies with gentle princess.

Giniro no Olynsiss doesn't really make sense until the end, which has one hell of a plot twist.
Besides, given the amount of time-travel in the backstory, some confusion is to be expected.-- This message brought to you by Ely Lilly, makers of SeraFem: Happy Pills for PMS.

There's a fellow on the rec.arts.anime.misc Usenet group who goes by the name "Manbow Papa" - he lives in Japan and posts a quarterly list of what he thinks are good shows. His list is like the Michelin guide in that just being listed is equivalent to a two-star rating from anyone else.
Ishikawa-san has just posted his most recent list - there's four shows with three stars, and we've only mentioned one of them...
Quote: *:fair, **:enjoyable, ***:must see
a:good animation/artwork, d:good drama/story,
h:humorous/hilarious, m:good music, v:violent,
w:heartwarming, +:outstanding (e.g. a+ means
outstanding animation/artwork)
1) Guren Ragan (GAINAX): ***, ah+m
One day, Shimon who is a tunnel driller in an underground town digs a Big Head. When a large robot falls down from the Upground to the town, Shimon, Kamina and Yoko get together to counter attack the robot with Ragan (the Big Head). Full of parodies, timely jokes, and oyakusoku gags. Excellent direction.
2) O-edo Rocket (Mad House): ***, a+hm
Seikichi is an engineer of firework in Edo. One day, a blue hair girl asks him to make a big firework which can reach the moon. Samurai + alien + citizen of Edo. Unpredictable story. Excellent visual. Pleasant atmosphere of the Edo period. The Kiba team got Aikawa Sho as the story editor. Naitoh Yasuhiro is on the animation staff list. Is he the same person who is the author of Trigun?
3) Seirei no Moribito (Production I.G): ***, a+dm
The king of Yogo tries to kill his son Chagumu because a water fairy imlanted its egg in Chagumu's body. Chagumu's mother asks Barusa who is a woman bodyguard to be his guard. Then a long journey of Barusa and Chagumu begins. Movie quality animation.
4) Lovely * Complex (Toei): ***, ah+mw
Koizumi is a very tall girl and Outani is a very short boy. They are always fighting. Koizumi is longing for Suzuki and Outani is longing for Chiharu. They go to a swimming pool for dating. But the original plan fails since Suzuki is falling love with Chiharu. Sharp direction. Very funny and entertaining.
Remainder of list not copied - for the entire list, look up Message-ID 58k24lF2h5me3U1@mid.individual.net on Google Groups' advanced search. Edit: It's here.

Rocket Girls
Director of a manned space program needs a successful launch by the end of the year to save the beleaguered operation. The problem: their only viable launch platform only allows for a pilot 40kg or lighter. His solution: manipulate young high school girls into the pilot's seat.
Comedy gold.

Ok, this series is more hilarious with each episode.
Not only is gainax lampooning giant-robot series tropes by the bucket-load, its also managing to be a damned good action show.
