Fic Writer's Guide |

The latest -- but still far from complete -- version of my ambitious "Fanfic Writer's Guide" has gotten a bit too big to post directly into a message, so I've put it on my website. It
can be found here, and will stay there for the foreseeable future. I'll update this thread or start a new one when I put up a new version. In the mean time, if people want to take a look and comment, go right ahead. Be aware that I haven't yet addressed everything that people pointed out or suggested the last time around, but trust me, the intent is there.
Thanks.
And yes, I'm working on DW5-3 as well. Don't worry.

I was going through the Credits sections of BSBW, and discovered that I've got eighteen songs quoted in the work so far - song powers, chapter header quotes, throwaway references by Doug, and so on. I know the copyright information for only five of the songs. This isn't a good average...
Does anyone know the copyright information for these songs?
English version of 99 Red Balloons, by Gabriela "Nena" Kerner.
Calypso, by John Denver.
Knock on Wood, written by Eddie Floyd and Steve Cropper.
I Am the Slime, by Frank Zappa.
Little Old Lady from Pasedena, by Jan and Dean.
Nemo, by Nightwish.
Raining Again, by Moby.
Rubber Band Man, by The Spinners.
(I'm So Hot for Her and) She's So Cold, by the Rolling Stones.
Stalin's Organs, by GWAR.
These Dreams, by Heart.
Working My Way Back To You, by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
You May Be Right, by Billy Joel.
To show folks what I need, here's the information for one of those other five songs:
Don't Stop Me Now, by Queen, written by Freddie Mercury, copyright 1978 EMI Music Publishing.
Thanks in advance...

They put up the announcement today. Apparently wings will be part of the Rewards program. They have screenshots of both types of wings and a short video of wings in action:

Short: "Storytellers" (Space Mage) |

A short little piece. In-character musings.
Consider this my widdle parting gift before I, y'know, vanish for a couple weeks to travel and sort out RL stuff. >_o
(Well, I'll probably be able to read the boards from time to time, whenever I can sneak net access...but I dunno how much time I'll have, and so on. Y'know.)
Anyway, a little insight into Space Mage's head. She's not just fluff and energy, you see...
STORYTELLERS
by Space Mage
We need stories.
We do.
They keep us going. They keep us breathing. Fiction, fables, tomes and tales. We need to hear. We need to believe.
Really, think about it. It's not like I'm pulling your leg or anything.
We tell stories to kids, of princesses, of animals, of magic and light. But they ain't just for children! Or if they are, then there's a part of us that never grows up. Like Peter Pan, except, you know, on the inside.
Books tell stories. So do movies, games, and television.
Maybe they're not good stories...but...no. No, no, no. All stories are good.
All tales have meaning. Maybe not the meaning their creators intended...but hey! Meaning all the same!
Some stories bring happiness and joy, smiles to faces, cheer to hearts. We love those stories, we all do.
But they're not the only stories.
There's stories that bring sadness, dread, and despair. The really, really, depressing ones.
But...
That doesn't make 'em bad. Fear can be conquered. Even if it isn't, it can help us. It can give us pause, make us reflect. It can make us think about stuff we've never thought of before, to ask tough questions about our lives and souls. Sometimes we don't like the answers, sure, but...maybe there's some things that should be feared.
There's meaning in stories. Whether they inspire or scare us, that doesn't matter. They teach us, that's the most important part. New lessons, and also old ones, things we should already know, things that should never, ever, be forgotten.
There's only so many themes out there, you know. Family, love, salvation, victory over evil. Or the trumph of darkness over light, and the breaking of such things. But that's the same story, just the other way. Because nasty things do happen in life. We can't deny that. Stuff happens.
But we want happy endings. For ourselves, at least. That's what we want to hear, what we need to hear.
There's power in stories. They reflect what we are. Our nightmares - and our dreams.
Buddha was a teacher. Muhammad was a prophet. But Jesus was a storyteller. The Good Samaritan, the Prodigal Son. He told stories, he made people think. Jesus was a storyteller. And he was a story. He came, he died to save the world - isn't that the biggest story of all? What we hope a hero to be.
Gods a storyteller. The world's a story.
Like all true stories, the world isn't all happy. There's tragedy, there's people dying, there's wasted lives. There's always conflict, always suffering.
But there's also a promise of victory. Victory in the end.
That's what we hold out for. That's what we need to believe in.
We need stories.
We need faith.

You know, I find it somewhat amusing that my favourite and most complex RP characters evolved rather than being designed that way. I mean, "Superball" was just a costume design with a silly pun name (it's a children's toy) stuck on. "Space Mage", similarly. No background at all when I started playing 'em. It just fell into place as I went on. Just goes to show...

The IRS has, as of today, stripped the Democratic Leadership Council of its tax-exempt status, on the grounds that they do not serve the public interest, but only that of democrat-party office-seekers.

You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Girl, we couldn't get much higher
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire
The time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire, yeah
The time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire
You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Girl, we couldn't get much higher
Come on baby, light my fire

Light My Fire, The Doors, from the 1967 album The Doors
Yes, of course I know what the song's really about. But read the lyrics literally, and you get an Empowerment song... Gives fire-based powers to a female Doug cares about ("Come on baby, light my fire"), gives her and Doug the ability to levitate ("You know that I would be a liar / If I was to say to you / Girl, we couldn't get much higher"), and makes both of them impulsive ("The time to hesitate is through").
This makes a good counterpart to (I'm So Hot For Her And) She's So Cold. It might also be of use in the Sailor Moon step, if Doug wanted to let Usagi experience some of Rei's abilities; he'd just have to keep an impulsive Sailor Moon from flying away, and how hard could that be?

Now like some *chough*TheStig*chough*pfloyd*chough* I've a minor prog-rock listening....obsession...liking. One of those bands that I like listening to and's found on me iPod is Muse. From watching the video clips they do, I wouldn't mind chatching 'em live. Some of their song may trigger a power for our man Sangnoir. Others, he might not want ot touch in a month of Sundays.
Starlight
Far away
The ship is taking me far away
Far away from the memories
Of the people who care if I live or die
Starlight
I will be chasing the starlight
Until the end of my life
I don't know if it's worth it anymore
Hold you in my arms
I just wanted to hold
You in my arms
My life
You electrify my life
Let's conspire to ignite
All the souls that would die just to feel alive
But I'll never let you go
If you promised not to fade away
Never fade away
Our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations
Our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations
Hold you in my arms
I just wanted to hold
You in my arms
Far away
The ship is taking me far away
Far away from the memories
Of the people who care if I live or die
And I'll never let you go
If you promise not to fade away
Never fade away
Our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations
Our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations
Hold you in my arms
I just wanted to hold
You in my arms
I just wanted to hold

Supermassive Black Hole
Oh baby dont you know I suffer?
Oh baby can you hear me moan?
You caught me under false pretenses
How long before you let me go?
You set my soul alight
You set my soul alight
(You set my soul alight)
Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the supermassive
(You set my soul alight)
Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the 'supermassive'
I thought I was a fool for no-one
Oh baby I'm a fool for you
You're the queen of the superficial
And how long before you tell the truth
You set my soul alight
You set my soul alight
(You set my soul alight)
Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the supermassive
(You set my soul alight)
Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the 'supermassive'

Time Is Running Out
I think I'm drowning
Asphyxiated
I wanna break this spell
That you've created
You're something beautiful
A contradiction
I wanna play the game
I want the friction
You will be the death of me
You will be the death of me
Bury it
I won't let you bury it
I won't let you smother it
I won't let you murder it
Our time is running out
Our time is running out
You can't push it underground
You can't stop it screaming out
I wanted freedom
Bound and restricted
I tried to give you up
But I'm addicted
Now that you know I'm trapped sense of elation
You'd never dream of
Breaking this fixation
You will squeeze the life out of me
Bury it
I won't let you bury it
I won't let you smother it
I won't let you murder it
Our time is running out
Our time is running out
You can't push it underground
You can't stop it screaming out
How did it come to this?
Ooooohh
You will suck the life out of me
Bury it
I won't let you bury it
I won't let you smother it
I won't let you murder it
Our time is running out
Our time is running out
You can't push it underground
You can't stop it screaming out
How did it come to this?
Ooooohh
Sing For Absolution
lips are turning blue
a kiss that can't renew
I only dream of you
my beautiful
tiptoe to your room
a starlight in the gloom
I only dream of you
and you never knew
sing for absolution
I will be singing
falling from your grace
there's nowhere left to hide
in no one to confide
the truth runs deep inside
and will never die
lips are turning blue
a kiss that can't renew
I only dream of you
my beautiful
sing for absolution
I will be singing
falling from your grace
sing for absolution
I will be singing
falling from your grace
our wrongs remain unrectified
and our souls won't be exhumed

declare this an emergency
come on and spread a sense of urgency
and pull us through
and pull us through
and this is the end
this is the end of the world
it's time we saw a miracle
come on it's time for something biblical
to pull us through
and pull us through
and this is the end
this is the end of the world
proclaim eternal victory
come on and change the course of history
and pull us through
and pull us through
and this is the end
this is the end of the world

New Toon - there's a second penguin in town |

Okay so I was talking to a buddy of mine about a film Demon Hunter a glorious, Constantine flavored failure of a film starring my favorite villain actor, Billy Drago. The conversation went on that all film nun protagonists, at least in the B genre, are nubile hotbodies who are a single leering look away from sin. We both lamented that we were unlikely to see arse-kicking nun protagonist who looked more like Bea Arthur than Angelina Jolie.
Which meant that a new Toon was in the offing. Big Momma S is now punishing evil over on Virtue.
Brief Introduction.
Sister. I know that there is no official age limit on registration, but are you sure you want to do this? The perky brunette receptionist looked at the form dubiously. The old nun merely stared back at her; the nearly black eyes holding an implacable calm. A hand, large, gnarled and callused emerged from the habit. There was the unmistakable sound of steel on steel. Thee long, steel rulers emerged from the back of the nuns hand; their edges gleaming bright and sharp. The nun casually flicked her wrist, the rulers gouging three parallel grooves in the marble of the counter-top.
I take it that is a yes. The rulers vanished as quickly as they emerged and the nun tucked her hands back into the sleeves of her habit. The receptionist swallowed hard. Her position required her to deal with the heroic, the weird, the strange and the merely tacky; it was part and parcel of being on the front line of Paragon meta-human registration. This still rang bells. An eighty year old nun. A very big eighty year old nun.
The letters should be of the same height and even. The hand emerged from the habit again, this time clutching what could only be described as a regulation, nun-issued, steel ruler. The receptionist paled and ducked her head slightly. There is no excuse for poor penmanship my child.
Yes Maam The receptionist considered moving her chair back, but the aged nun had already demonstrated viper-quick speed; escape was futile. Good hand-writing skills were her only defense. I need your hero name please.
Big Momma S. The nun said calmly. I am the Mother Superior of Our Lady of Doing Gratuitously Violent Things to Them Wot Deserves Gratuitously Violent Things Done Unto Them. I have also served at Saint Defenestrations School for Closed Windows, Our Lady of the Sucking Chest Wound and Saint Crotchkickers Home For Knackered Lowlifes. And Lourdes.
Sign here please. The receptionist pushed the completed form to the nun. She took the proffered pen and signed with machine-perfect precision.
* * *
How much are penguins worth? The BurnJack leaned against the wall as he held court over his Hellion minions. Atlas Park had been good to him this morning, he had collected several purses; with accompanying jewelry and watches, and had sown a great deal of wonderful chaos. A nun would be the perfect thing to cap things off before lunch.
My son. The nun seemed largely unconcerned at being accosted by the towering, tattooed thug. Perhaps it was because she could meet his eyes without looking up. Perspective was a funny thing, she has seemed much smaller coming up the street. Still, the wrinkled features proclaimed her age, and everyone knew that the dangerous nuns were young hotbodies; not older, Bea Arthur types.
Sister! BurnJack played up the moment. I am a wretched evildoer. I steal, I rape, I pillage. I am a force of chaos released upon the world! Its better to burn out than to fade away!
Blessed are the evildoers. The nun raised a hand in benediction, For they shall receive a kingdom of pain.
BurnJack had been prepared for many things; his banter carefully practiced ahead of time; his repertoire of punishing martial arts moves polished with the precision of long practice, and his body toughened by the arcane rituals of the Hellions. So he could not readily explain why the next thing out of his mouth was a high pitched girlish scream. For Big Momma S, the explanation was apparent. She had grabbed Burnjack by the crotch and lifted, hauling the Hellion into the air and then slamming him down hard onto the pavement. Relinquishing her grip, she stomped a heavy, sensible shoe onto his throat, reducing his screams to a mewling, gagging noise.
Evil is second to nun; and I am that nun. The two remaining Hellions swallowed, watching Burnjack as he writhed helplessly on the ground. The one on the left made a break for it. Big Momma S drew a steel ruler from her habit and threw it expertly; the flashing steel embedding itself in the Hellions right kidney. He fell screaming to the pavement.
Nuns arent supposed to do that! The last Hellion went for his gun with a shaky hand. Love your enemies and all that garbage.
Forgive him lord. The nun made the same benediction, wickedly sharp rulers emerging from her hands. For he knows not what a can of whoop ass he has opened.
The Hellion considered his options. Running was out. Fighting was out. That left screaming like a school girl, praying and wetting himself. Just to be safe he chose all three.
