  Formating query
Posted by: Matrix Dragon - 10-13-2022, 10:19 PM - Forum: Forums - Replies (4)

I was copying something over from GDocs, and for whatever reason, when I posted, it added a butt ton of line breaks between paragraphs, then added more every time I tried to edit it. Anyone know what's causing it, and how I could avoid it in future? 'Don't use Gdocs' will get a trout thrown at you Tongue

Question Are there any WWII experts on the forum?
Posted by: robkelk - 10-11-2022, 04:19 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (5)

I'm wondering exactly what this "WWII American Tank" is. (That particular digital-model store has a deep aversion to actually giving something its real-world name, which is usually justifiable because those are trademarks, but in this case makes no sense because it's a freaking public domain US Government name.)

I expect that there are enough promotional images for somebody who knows his (or her) tanks to be able to identify which kind of tank this is...

  A Teaser from Story 1...

Quote:On this planet, they called it the monomyth, but it had other names among the multitude of races in the galaxy.  Some called it the "tale of tales", while others called it "the path passing the gods."  But the elements of the story of a hero's journey remained astonishingly similar across nearly all of the races that Dr. Washuu Hakubi had encountered.  And the ones that didn't?  Well, they were all an exceedingly tedious lot, whose cultures' only story tended to be along the lines of "we will gloriously exterminate everyone else."  Dreadfully boring, and boringly dreadful, she believed.

She had first come to investigate this field of inquiry while thinking about Tenchi Masaki, which was the favorite pastime in the household where she had found herself the past few months.  All of the women there, without exception, had a romantic interest in Tenchi, but Washuu additionally had an academic interest, too.  It had started as a scientific investigation, as she assessed how his power had developed.  But as she began reading the literature of his home planet for fun, she began to see similarities in those stories to Tenchi's experiences, and to other stories from distant worlds.  And soon, she found her research reaching deep into the humanities.

Perhaps her research would have stayed in the humanities, if she hadn't noticed the letters.

  Yes, the forums were down

Netcarrier had some kind of fiber break, which they apparently just completed fixing a bit over half an hour ago as I type this. So, yes, the forums were down, but I'm glad to say they're back now, with a whole lot less fuss than the last two times they disappeared.

Quebec provincial election and "first past the post"
Posted by: robkelk - 10-05-2022, 07:52 AM - Forum: Politics and Other Fun - Replies (1)

Five different political parties made decent if not spectacular showings in the popular vote during the 2022 provincial election in Quebec.

Four different political parties had candidates who were actually elected.

According to Wikipedia:

  • Coalition Avenir Québec: 40.98% of the popular vote, 72% of the seats.
  • Liberal: 14.37% of the popular vote, 17% of the seats.
  • Québec solidaire: 15.43% of the popular vote, 9% of the seats.
  • Parti Québécois: 14.61% of the popular vote, 2% of the seats.
  • Conservative: 12.91% of the popular vote, 0% of the seats.

Naturally, everybody but the CAQ is calling for electoral reform.

You ever have one of those dreams?
Posted by: Bob Schroeck - 10-01-2022, 02:39 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (2)

Just before I woke up this morning, I was dreaming I was in a casual restaurant discussing... something, I have no clue what now... with Robkelk. There were TVs in the dining room running music videos. And in the last moments before I woke up, the one closest to us starting running the video for a collaboration between Nightwish and Olivia Newton-John. And it was good. I just wish I could remember it.

That's all. You can go back to whatever you were doing.

Crossovers That Should Not Be 26 -- More bad ideas for a new era

Issue #25 here.

So we can keep proper continuity, we repeat Robkelk's post at the end of the last thread:

  [Retcon] Spot the shout-outs
Posted by: robkelk - 09-19-2022, 02:35 PM - Forum: The Attic - Replies (4)

This has been up on the wiki for a while without changes, so it's likely to be included in the retcon of the introductory story.

I think I might have gone a little overboard in the shout-outs, though... Can anybody (who isn't in the writers' circle) identify them all?

Quote:If the reality of the human race was up to him to define, then he had better get around to defining it. He'd been thinking about this for what seemed like a year; it was time to get it over with.

Don't just rebuild the world; redefine it. No, revolutionize it! No Third Impact. No Second Impact. Just an Earth where somebody could venture over the wall around his heart without risking being hurt, and interact with others on a fair basis, with love, and justice, not like the relationships that his father had manipulated him into. A place where he could spread his own wings and take to the sky, instead of being forced to plod along the ground in a role that other people chose for him. Maybe a place of wonders, where science and magic could meet and then stories would begin, but that sort of whimsy might be too much to ask for, even if it was a small wish. But definitely some place where the horrors that he and Auska and Rei had gone through could be imagined, but as nothing more than a story. He so dearly wanted to live in a place where today was always the best day, he could enjoy everything, and everything would definitely be all right.

And maybe a place where he'd have a chance to meet somebody with a light heart who would like him for who he actually was, and would tell him "you belong"... but not just fall into his life. He'd have to work for that person's friendship. Maybe start with sharing some tea, after school.

I'll provide two hints: The shout-outs are to other works, and two of the shout-outs are to the same work.
