  Utility: protection from elements
Posted by: Labster - 05-13-2022, 03:37 PM - Forum: The Game Everyone Loves To Play - No Replies

My Winter Coat is pretty relaxed.  It's a song about a winter coat, and it seems like a joke song, except it just keeps going on and on, and eventually you admit that the musician must really love her coat.

As a power song, it's eight and a half minutes, which is long enough to do something useful.  Protection from cold is obvious, but I was thinking it might be protection from the elements more generally.  "It's like walking around in your bed all day," after all.  Plus I can just see Doug ready to head across the Sahara, and summoning up a parka.  "Now I'm ready!"  I assume that he could give the conjured coat to others too... it is a coat.

"Whatever happened to us yesterday wasn't time travel. We're definitely not in our home world."

"How do you figure that, Rally?" asked Bean around big bites of burgers, not really caring but willing to humor his sometimes-partner.

"When I went to renew my license this morning, they told me that bounty hunting's illegal here. Even if you get a license out-of-state."

"That's a shame," May commented. "It's been three decades. When did they change the law?"

"That's how I know we're in a different world. They changed it in 1963."

May's eyebrows headed for her forehead. "But that's before I was born!"

"Huh," Bean grunted. "So we're not home. Any idea how to find out where we are?"

"Not a clue. Right now, I'm more worried about how to earn a living. Burgers aren't free."

Usagi Tsukino is canonically 4'11".

Queen Victoria was 4'11".

Coincidence?  I think not!

  "Roe v Wade"

Surprised we didn't have a thread for this already, considering it's the first time I can remember that there was a leak from the US Supreme Court.

Anyway.

American women can obtain abortions in Canada if Roe v. Wade falls, minister says

Star [IC][STORY][Spamfic][ARC 3] From the person who has everything
Posted by: robkelk - 05-03-2022, 07:58 PM - Forum: The Attic - Replies (2)

A little something inspired by fan art, set some time down the road, once people are making their ways in the world.

"Remind me again why we're doing this?"

Rei sighed. "Somebody has to do it, Your Royal Highness."

"We have staff! Well-paid staff! Why aren't they doing this?"

"It's because we have staff that we have to be the ones to do this."

Usagi thought about that for a moment. "You've lost me there."

Sometimes, Rei Hino despaired for her queen. This was one of those times. "We're both in charge of planets now, and by agreement you're the face of the Solar System to anybody who wants to deal with people who don't live on Earth. Belldandy save us all."

"Hey! I'm not that bad!"

Rei refused to comment.

"I know I'm the Silver Millennium's top diplomat because of who I am and who I was in my life in the Silver Millennium, Rei. And I also know that you know that that job plus my schoolwork keeps me busy. Too busy to be doing something like this."

"And that's exactly why you're out here doing it."

Usagi blinked as she tried to figure out what Rei was saying. Finally, she said, "You're not making any sense."

"We have money. we have people to do things for us. We can get almost anything that isn't unique just by asking for it and justifying spending tax money on it."

"I don't do that!"

"Neither do I, but we could do that. What we don't have is unlimited time. So the only thing that we can give anybody as a present that means anything..."

"... is our time! Okay, I get it now!"

"Finally!" Rei Hino, Princess Mars, dope-slapped her sovereign ... lightly and playfully. "Now can we get back to cleaning Ami's pool for her?"

"After we finish this break. You know what Kyoko would say if she caught us wasting food, even something like these ice pops."

Rei nodded. "Okay, let's finish our snack, then get back to work."

[split] [I/OOC] Incidental Bits 2 - The Comebacks
Posted by: Black Aeronaut - 04-30-2022, 04:53 PM - Forum: Hangar 13 - Replies (2)

"If you're just joining us now, this is All Things Considered with Alisa Chang.  We are interviewing Benjamin Rhodes about his recent science fiction novel, Negative Return.  Benjamin, some people have compared you favorably against George R. R. Martin, someone who is known for writing incredibly detailed and likeable characters, and then suddenly killing them off with little to no warning.  Your stories, however, seem to be the very antithesis to this.  Would you care to comment on that?"

"Well... it's like this.  I'm the sort of person who is very much in touch with their emotions.  And throughout my life, I've had terrible things happen to me.  Things that have nearly destroyed me on the inside.  And unlike with what Mr. Martin does, death had very little to do with my hurt.  So when I write these stories, my desire is to make other people understand this feeling.  The sorrow, the betrayal, the sheer unmitigated emotional hurt that makes you wish for death.

"When I write, I want to make you suffer.  I want you to feel the pain that I have felt all throughout my life.  And I do that by making these characters that, despite being unlike anyone you've ever met, you find yourself relating so closely to them that when they're hurt, you're hurt as well."

"That seems awfully grim.  Is there a particular reason for that?"

"Two, actually.  For one thing, I want people to understand what it is to be me.  Even after my second childhood, I'm not fully recovered from my past traumas because the experiences of what I went through are still there.  There's also Spider Robinson's rule that you should write what you know, and this is the kind of stuff that I'm intimately familiar with.  Secondly, it's my hope that if more people understand what this feels like, then the more people will act when they see something wrong.  When they get that sense that all is not right.  Or even that they will reconsider their actions before they choose to inflict suffering."

"Sister Princess" and "Sister Princess: RePure"
Posted by: robkelk - 04-29-2022, 09:34 PM - Forum: General DW Chatter - Replies (2)

Despite what ATT said until a few minutes ago, Sister Princess: RePure is not a sequel to Sister Princess... but the characters have the same personalities and names (save for Wataru, who doesn't have a name in RePure, and Mami, who only appears in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo and is also unnamed). RePure is a reimagining where the girls and their big brother have known each other for years and the town they live in is old enough to have started suffering from urban decay in some places. And the siblings don't live together.

So... Bob, use things from RePure in DW XI at your own risk.
