All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XVIII

Old thread is old.

"Please Put Some Clothes On" currently uses this image as its page image. That image is cropped from this image that shows more.

Now, I don't see any issue with replacing the crop with the complete image (since The Second Google Incident doesn't apply to us), but I know my community's standards are different from other communities' standards.

Safe to replace, or not?

In the House of Stone and Light
Posted by: DHBirr - 11-10-2020, 04:24 PM - Forum: The Game Everyone Loves To Play - Replies (1)

"Canst thou not minister to a mind diseased?"

The basic thrust of this song is spiritual healing.  "It's been too long, my spirit's been at war."  It seems to me it'd work on emotional disorders the way "I'm Alive" heals physical injuries.  Target the shell-shocked with "I'll Play for You" and let them say goodbye to their PTSD, crippling phobias, the psychological aspect of drug addiction....

In the House of Stone and Light
Written by Martin Page (1994)

O Mount Kailas, uncover me;
come my restoration, wash my body clean
I've been walking along a crooked path
where the walls have fallen and broken me in half

I'm telling you, I will not rest till I lay down my head
I'm gonna go in the house of stone and light
I shall not cry for the blind man I leave behind
when I go in the house of stone and light,
(yeah) in the house of stone and light

Holy Lady, show me my soul;
tell me of that place where I must surely go
Old man waiting at the gates for me,
give me the wisdom, give me the key

I'm telling you, I will not rest till I lay down my head
In the house of stone and light
I'll make my way, O gonna be such a beautiful day
In the house of stone and light
(ohhhh) In the house of stone and light

Let me in beneath my skin,
yeah, yeah, oh oh
In the house of stone and light
It's been too long, my spirit's been at war
Havasupai Shaman, let me be reborn
And I will embrace the sun upon my face,
come the day I awake the child inside
in the house of stone and light
And when I go I will op-op-open my eyes
in the house of stone and light
I will see you in the house of stone and light

I'm looking in beneath my skin,
yeah, yeah, oh oh
In the house of stone and light, I'm coming inside
In the house of stone and light, looking for the child
In the house of stone and light, see myself got such a good shelter
In the house of stone and light
In the house of stone and light, I'm gonna let this child come washing of water
In the house of stone and light, He's speaking softly to me
(I must go there, to find my soul, yeah)
In the house of stone and light, I can see so clearly now
(I will go there to find my soul, yeah)
In the house of stone and light, we'll keep on knocking on my door
(I must go there, to find my soul, yeah)

In the house of stone and light
(I will go there, to find my soul, yeah)
In the house of stone and light
(I must go there, to find my soul, yeah)

(Note:  The first line's reference to "Mount Kailas" is apparently linked to the Buddhist myth of Shambhala.)

Apparently, their precious "dress code" is more important than showing respect for people who fought for freedom.

  History: 5 November 1940 - A Ship of War
Posted by: DHBirr - 11-05-2020, 11:04 AM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (1)

On 5 November 1940, the British armed merchant cruiser Jervis Bay, a commercial ship hastily fitted with not-quite-obsolete 6-inch (152mm) guns, escorting a convoy of 37 almost-completely-unarmed vessels, encountered the German pocket battleship Admiral Scheer – a heavy cruiser hull with not-quite-battleship-sized main guns.
Even the pocket battleship’s 150mm secondary guns, being more modern, had longer range and greater destructive power than the AMC’s armament, in spite of their slightly smaller bore.
Ordering the convoy to scatter, Jervis Bay’s captain trailed a smokescreen and attacked the German.  Admiral Scheer’s captain kept beyond the range of the AMC’s weapons and blasted the British ship apart with his 280mm main guns, killing most of the crew.  It took just 22 minutes once the German vessel began firing.
Because Jervis Bay had bought time for the convoy to disperse, however, Admiral Scheer was able to sink only five of the other 37 ships.

“The convoy had scattered in safety while Jervis Bay, outgunned and ablaze, matched shot for shot with a German battleship.” — Douglas Reeman, Rendezvous—South Atlantic (novel, 1972, page 8)

Was in CoH this evening and checking to see who's been on recently I noticed something hilarious. I'm not sure when or why but once more Terrence is 'Leader' of the SG. The running gag continues apparently .

Seriously though I'm guessing its because Mag Flashlight hasn't been on for a certain amount of time. I could be wrong though.

  Democracy is not a game
Posted by: robkelk - 10-31-2020, 11:55 AM - Forum: Politics and Other Fun - Replies (3)

Starting a thread because this is a "meta" topic, not limited to any one country or any one election.

Things fall apart in the United States — and Canada takes a hard look in the mirror

Quote:Now, at the conclusion of another presidential election campaign, the ability of the United States to fulfil even the basic requirements of democracy — free and fair elections and a peaceful transfer of power — is in doubt.

Quote:As Mettler and Lieberman write, differences across political parties can be good and healthy. There's a downside to fetishizing centrism or bi-partisanship. But the system can start to break down when politicians and citizens view each other as enemies rather than rivals.

Quote:American politics is Canada's second-favourite spectator sport. And we have long defined and measured ourselves by how unlike the United States we are. Though the term fell out of use during the Obama era, it used to be that accusing someone of participating in "American-style politics" was a grievous charge in Canada.

That oppositional tendency might serve Canada well now. But this is hardly the time for anyone to feel smug. The United States is reminding us now that nothing is guaranteed, nothing can be taken for granted.

Democracy can be silly and entertaining and a wonder to behold. But it is not a game.

  Unofficial Competition: Truthful but Misleading
Posted by: robkelk - 10-31-2020, 11:18 AM - Forum: The Forum Competition - Replies (22)

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to come up with a Truthful but Misleading description of a famous work, preferably in a single sentence. You are not allowed to lie about the content of the work, but the description has to give a completely wrong idea about the story. Put the name of the work in a spoiler tag after the description, so that we can try guessing what work you've described misleadingly.

As examples, here are descriptions about two films:

Transported to a surreal landscape, a young girl kills the first woman she meets, then teams up with three complete strangers to kill again.

Bedridden girl's invisible friend remodels her room and turns heads.

EDIT: I included sources for the lines in the spoilers because neither of these is original to me. You don't have to include a source when you make up your own entry.

Have fun!
