Disney Buys Marvel
Disney Buys Marvel

Excelsior?

The usual geek handwringing ensues across the internet. Though hey, maybe Kingdom Hearts 3 just became the most awesome game ever.

Yow.

I can't decide if this is potentially awesome, or if Marvel is about to get bowdlerized into irrelevancy.

Keep in mind that Disney has been able to release lots of adult material under their Miramax imprint.

Well, if you're referring to their printed stock, Joe Quesada was doing a good job of that without
any exterior assistance with "Brand New Day".

I heard this and my thought was, Meh... Thanks to Joey Cheese, Marvel's already "dead to me". I honestly can't see how this could make things
-worse-.

Oh, right, yeah, forgot about that. (Haven't been a Marvel reader in a dog's age, been getting all my info second-hand.)

At the very least, Disney won't mind if people get married.

But are we going to go from "nobody stays dead" to "nobody dies"?

Clap if you believe in Captain America...

I have mixed feelings about this. While I am a little suspicious of Disney Entertainment and their track record with handling properties, I am wondering if
this is going to be a hilarious screw you to Universal Studios - whose theme park used multiple Marvel Hero themed rides.

On the movie side, I want you all picture your favorite Marvel Hero portrayed by Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Tim Allen, or Nick Cage... okay, you
don't have to work too hard on that last one. Clawing your eyes out yet? Tim Allen is Dr. Strange - Eye of Agamato 'O 'O 'O. On the other
side, the idea of the people at Pixar having access to some of the Marvel mythology is a very interesting thought.

Some people will consider it the end of the world, and Galactus is wearing mouse ears.

And I feel like such a nerd for writing that last sentence.

If the merger leads to excellence, my general approval of the existence of quality entertainment will lead me to dub this Awesome.

If the merger leads to horrific disneyfication and mutilation of childhood dreams of spandex, my longstanding contempt for the 'Big Two' model of the
American comics industry will lead me to dub this Comedy.

Either way, I think I win. ^_^

Just before I left for work this morning I came across an online editorial about this from the New York Daily News. Looks like we're not the only people expecting the worst from this.

Y'know, one could argue that this is a direct result of Joe Quesada mis-managing the brand so awfully.

Do we really want the precedent of Disney meddling to that level?

Normally I'd be very against meddling from Disney.

But if they undid everything Joe Quesada (and others) did over the last 15-20 years - up to and including erasing it all from continuity and starting over - I
wouldn't shed a tear or lift a finger to stop them.

It's really THAT BAD what has happened at Marvel. To the point where Disney-fication might actually be an improvement. As eye-gougingly, sanity blasting as that sounds, it's nothing more than the simple
truth.

I can't help but think this is a good thing, considering the gong show Marvel's been lately. But then, I'm a DC fan.

There's a list of the competitions reactions that really intrigues me, and a post from a friend of mine that I'm going to just cut and paste here because he says it better then I can.

Quote:Oni Press publisher Joe Nozemack: "This deal is further evidence of
the maturation and importance of the comic book community to the
overall entertainment industry. It also highlights the enormous value
of the next generation of comic book companies such as Oni Press, who
-- by developing amazing stories and characters in every genre that go
beyond superheroes -- become even more valuable as the remaining
studios and financial institutions seek intellectual property."

Matt Hawkins, president and COO of Top Cow Productions: "The Disney
acquisition of Marvel Comics is a testament to the value of comics, the
properties and franchises we in the industry create, and a positive
indication of how comic-book companies are valued by the larger
entertainment industry."

Jon Goldwater, co-CEO Archie Comics Publications: "What is good for
Marvel Entertainment is good for Archie Comics. We are all connected as
comic-book publishers, and the exposure from this acquisition will
bring new attention to all of the industry's iconic IP's. Disney's
acquisition of Marvel shows how important these properties are to pop
culture. With comic-book characters becoming more prominent in TV,
movies and animation, comics have become more relevant and more
attractive to Hollywood studios than ever. We wish Disney and Marvel
the best of luck in their new venture together."

Dynamite Entertainment president Nick Barrucci: "It's an historic
day. I'm very happy to see the hard work that all of our friends at
Marvel have put in be rewarded with this opportunity."

Aspen Comics' Vince Hernandez: "Disney's purchase of Marvel is
exciting news any way you look at it. There are so many possibilities
that come to mind with this merger it's impossible to try to imagine
them all, but it's fun thinking of them. I think there's positives for
both companies. With Disney, they now have a wonderful universe of
characters and talent to draw from, and for Marvel, they get the
powerful reach and the resources of Disney. I'm sure both companies see
this as a tremendous, fruitful partnership -- and rightly so. "

IDW Publishing's Chris Ryall: "I love seeing comics-related news
like this dominate the Internet like it is, but it's too soon to say
what it means for either side. I do only see upside in the deal,
though."

DC Comics representative Alex Segura: "We're declining comment."
Quote:MachSabre wrote:
One thing of interest though... They've had their internal strifes, as Don Bluth and the complications with Pixar prior to the buyout, has shown. However, publically speaking, Disney has a policy of essentially "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all." They have rivals and competitors, as all companies do. But as like most companies... They tend to keep their opinions to themselves. (Which is what DC here did. And why DC doesn't talk more smack against Marvel.)
Even in cases like Apple vs PC... Yeah, they're pointing out the flaws PCs have, but even still, the ads are generally in competitive good nature and not anywhere near the lines of Joe Q's infamous slam of DC:
"They’d be better off calling it AOL Comics. At least people know what AOL is. I mean, they have Batman and Superman, and they don’t know what to do with them. That’s like being a porn star with the biggest dick and you can’t get it up. What the fuck?"
Joe Q is going to be forced to watch his mouth. He won't be able to be as big of a braggart as he's been in the past, or he will be removed.
You know.
That right there is worth four billion dollars.

No, no. You're going at this the wrong way. Don't think Wolverine with safety-tipped claws...

See:

So Bambi's mother dies, right?

But her corpse gets taken by a top-secret government black agency, and then they clone her to make an ultimate cyborg weapon, which they then send after Bambi.

Then it turns out that Bambi's mom wasn't dead at all but actually somehow survived the procedur---
