edit to break up this huge chunk of text. New sidescene post next.
I was rereading the frst manga chapters the other day, and suddenly realized that the fanon idea of Iruka having been a big brother/father figure for Naruto and the only person besides Sarutobi-sama and the ramen stand guy who treated him like a person instead of a walking ball of evil is almost certainly wrong. Up until Naruto fails the genin exam and Sandaime has a talk with Iruka, he's quite cutting in his speech, and drawn with the same 'cold eyes' as everyone else, then when we next see him just before Mizuki comes to finger Naruto for stealing the scroll, Iruka is thinking back to that conversation, and the fact that he only then learned that Naruto's life (and even more so, troublemaking and the lonliness behind it) paralelled his own to such an extent.
This makes his stand against Mizuki and announcement of accepting Naruto as a stufent he's proud to have taught into quite the change of heart, and much more significant as a turning point than it would otherwise be. It also makes the set up for my own version of the story even better, I think, and more likely that the Hokage himself would pull strings to get the kids assigned together if they are literally the only other freinds Naruto has ever had, besides what little attention he cqan spare the boy himself - though if I were making the descision based on IC knowledge, I'd probably still do it sicne they'd already formed a working, reasonably-close-to-balanced team with short, medium, and long range specialist students and a jounin eligible for sensei duties, whether I had a personal interest in one of them or not.
They're a bit heavy on taijutsu, with all three having a primary or secondary specialization in it, but since that's the foundation of combat anyway it's far from being a problem - it doesn't matter how many cool ninjutsu you know if you're not fast enoguh and don't have the stamina to pull them off, nor will genjutsu and book skills help you any when (not 'if,' there's always someone better) you meet someone who can break your best illusion and uses some technique you've never heard of... or for that matter, if youre trying to be stealthy around other ninja who will sense chakra being used, and have to take out a sentry or a mission target.
Come to think of it, I might put that rant in a character's mouth if the opportune moment comes up - maybe a flashback of early days training with Gai when Naruto comlains about only ever training in taijutsu, when that's Lee's specialty! I want to learn a cool ninjutsu, yeah! You're a jounin, right, you gotta know lots of cool ones. YEAH, YEAH! NINJUTSU!!
Of course, Gai will get him some fire moves, and something else for the event he has to fight someone strong against fire, like an ice shuriken maybe, but first, speech. Like SOMEONE said way back when the bunny was just a twinkle in several people's eyes, -no one- knows the basics like the fuzzy-brows.

TXY Side Story: Two heads are better than one?
#53
Oh, just a note on continuity - this is set around four months after Naruto and TXY graduated, just after the chuunin exam Gai didn't enter them in, and at the start of the new Academy year.

Kami, was she thristy! It had taken Ino two hours to compose the stupid review essay Iruka-sensei wanted on the theory and applications of bunshin and kawarimi before he taught them to combine the two so the object they swapped with would keep their appearance until it was hit, between the time spent actually coming up with what to write, and then copying it neatly onto a scroll to turn in. Massaging her wrist, the somewhat-less-chipper-than-usual blonde slipped out of the studdy and headed to the kitchen for a drink, pausing at the head of the stairs as she heard her parents' voices in the family room below.
"-omiai? Honestly, she's only eleven years old! What is he thinking?" her mother complained. Ino's eye twitched as she realized what they were talking about. Unless they meant arranging something with Sasuke-kun, there was gonna be hell to pay!
Her father sounded nearly as exasperated as his wife, replying, "I thoguht the old coot gave in too easily about teaching them, and now I know why. Grandmother and Uncle Inoichi are against forcing the issue, but even they would like to see such strong talent reinforcing the bloodline." He sighed, and from the soft sound of their movements, Ino guessed he'd pulled Mother into a hug. "She's the only one available for it, since Inoko married that Asagiri boy, and my sister only has sons. Ino, come downstairs."
Flushing slightly and wondering what had given her away - and when she'd get to learn it! - the youngest Yamanaka complied, picking up energy as she shook off embarrassment and remembered to be angry about getting fixed up with someone that didn't ound like Sasuke-kun at all. At least, she didn't think her father had ever taught the handsome Uchiha heir.
Her father cut her off before she could give voice to her displeasure, however. "Ino-chan, I've invited two of my old genin team over for dinner tomorrow so you can meet them - just a normal introduction, not an omiai - as a matter of keeping peace in the clan. You WILL be polite and gracious, understood?"
"But daddy!"
"Do you understand?" he insisted.
"All riiiight..." she reluctantly agreed, thinking, "but just because I have to be polite doesn't mean I have to like them, or make them like me!"
Her father's skeptical look warned that he probably understood what she'd left unsaid all too well, but he let it slide for now. "The boys are twins, Haruno Jinrei and Kenshiro, and instead of the normal Haruno bloodline they are very strongly psychic."
"What!? Forehead girl has a special bloodline? Maybe a bloodline for keeping her nose in musty old scrolls without choking to death, or signal flashes reflecting the sunlight off her oversized expanse of -" She cut herself off, staring angrily at the floor when her father cleared his throat threateningly.
"The Haruno bloodline is one of the very oldest, like our own, well established even before the first of the graet ninja wars, when shinobi began to change from specialists in infiltration and espionage to front line combatants." he explained. "Their ability is espescially suited for use by deep cover operatives, but more combat oriented uses have been developed as times changed, also. For one thing, their second self is a perfect defense against mind-controlling jutsu, including many of our own family jutsu. those techniques take considerable training to acheive, however, soo it's no suprise if the only thing your freind has shown is unusually good chakra control."
"The twins are different, however, as I said. Even without knowing any of our jutsu, their psychic ability would be very valuable to keep the Yamanaka bloodline strong, since abilities like our own are so rare outside the clan, and we are too small to marry within it the way the Hyuuga often do, and the Uchiha did." Inoshi's face softened, as did his tone, knowing that if he was too authoritarian his strong-willed daughter would disobey just to be contrary. "I'm not asking you to fall head over heels at first sight, or to do anything particularly romantic while the boys are half again your age. All I want is for you to give being friends with them a chance, and let anything more develop as it may."
It took a bit more grumbling on Ino's part, soothing on her father's, and few sharp words about manners from her mother before the conversation wound down, but Ino already knew she'd been licked. She was still dying of thirst, for that matter, and too much talking might damage her poor parched throat.

---=- + -=---

Edit: Yay dinner!

---=- + -=---

Dinner the next evening had come and gone without major difficulty, thoguh Ino had been a bit wierded out by the twins' tendency to switch off in mid-sentence when one or the other needed to take a breath or a bite of food. Then her parents had shooed the three of them into the family room while adults cleaned up, and an awkward silence had fallen.
Her family's marriage-minded maneuverings were absolutely the LAST thing she wanted to talk about, espescially if no one had told the boys - Please, by all the kami, let no one have mentioned any such thing! - but absolutely nothing else was coming to mind. Worse, she could feel a light blush forming as she continued to look them over, the open vests and tight skinsuit doing littl to hide the fit bodies of active ninja. *SASUKE-KUN, Sasuke-kun, Sasuke-kun...* she chanted in her head, trying to purge any such thoughts, then admitted, "...wears that bulky jacket all the time, so I have no idea if he's really this hot under it." She sighed, and felt the strong urge to start fiddling with her hands like that Hyuuga girl was always doing.
Taking pity on her, the twins drew a breath, then one said, "Ino-san, your father told you a bit about us, right?" At her hesitant nod, the one on the left continued, "He said he'd told you that Harunos usual have a second self, but that we're psychic, like Yamanakas, instead. That's -"
"- not quite accurate," right-side-red continued. "We've kept it a secret so far, but your family probably wants you to think about dating one of us, sicne psychics are so uncommon."
Damn! They'd figured it out, or someone had told them and they were trying to be politic. The blonde girl could feel her cheeks burn, but stubbornly brought her eyes up to meet the green orbs of... damn, which one was which again? She took a guess and said, "Well, yeah, Kenshiro-san. Mostly the elders, really."
The pink-haired boys smiled un eerie unison, before requesting, "What we have to say is a swecret even from our own family, but since you're now involved, we tink you should know. Will you let us use a psychic contact so no one can listen in?"
Still upset with herself and her parents. Ino thoguht for only a second - long enough to realise that in a telepathic link she could tell them off without her parents hearing - and agreed. The two boys shufled closer togehter on their cushions, then interlinked their near arms to each form half of the familiar, triangular hand seal used for Shintenshin, leaning their heads together to both look through it at her. There was the familier pull of contact, then the three of them were in her mental space. Ino smirked slightly, seeing that their mental images apparently hadn't adjusted to their recent promotions, since despite the proudly worn vests on their real bodies they had only the bodysuits in here, while her own mental self had a perfect replica of the outfit she'd chosen for the day.
The bodysuits weren't even accurate, she realized - one had a red pattern on both sides, and the other was inverterd, mostly red with black arms. Also, their facial expressions had lost that eerie unison, the one on the left wearing a confident smirk while his twin smiled warmly. Left folded his black-sleeved arms, while right introduced them and explained, "I'm Kenshiro, he's Jinrei... but the truth is, we're not really two Harunos with a strange blip in the bloodline. Actually, we're one normal Haruno who happens to have two bodies. Jinrei would have been Inner Kenshiro, and most of the time I run them both. When we're in combat, separated, or in some other situation where full attention is needed for each body, that's the only time he really takes over. Since my parents named the first body born Kenshiro, Jinrei decided to take the extra name."

===========================================
ARGH ARGH ARGH!! I hate it when this happens! The muse has fed while I was distracted, and now I can't even remember what was left, besides Jinrei being loud and somehwat obnoxious like any other Inner Haruno (like anyone who feels free to comment withoiut worrying what the people he's commenting on will think about it, really) and Ino being suprised because Kenshiro is the one she's been dealing with all evening, despite the names. There wasn't really any more story to go with it, just the one-shot here, to prosify what I outlined in the Haruno family profiles, but there was a LITTLE more than I have - or should have been. Oh well. opinions? I kind of feel like Ino should be a little louder herself, but it came out this way.

So, Ino has a choice here: the 'What's in the jacket' Uchiha or the '2 for 1' Haruno.

That's "the '2 for 1' Haruno who actually acknowledges her existence." While sasuke will get at least a bit de-assified by having his own unreturned crush, it won't be on her. Besides, like I've said before - they're KIDS. What's more, Kenshiro, seeing some of the ninja his age start the mating dances preparatory to pairing off at 16 or 17, but not feeling any urgency about it himself (He has what you might call an unusual degree of insurance against dying in the line of duty) nor any espescial attraction beyond the usual "Hmm, shee's hot. Yeah, her too." for the kunoichi he knows, is willing to be a freind for a while and see if something developes by the time Ino gets to the teens. Nothing is certain, but 'freind with acknowledged interest' doesn't sound like a bad starting point to me...

So, Rock Lee. He can't channe enough chakra for even the basic three jutsu, but can he tree climb? What about water walking? I got back into a productive mood one this, but seek opinions for him re the training recieved while TXY and Jiraya are investigating the Two Gees gang and their rumored super-nin-tools.

I'd say no, he can't water-walk or tree climb. I've always assumed no, at least. Granted, I'm not entirely up-to-date on the anime...I haven't seen most of the 'filler' arcs, so perhaps someone could pull in evidence otherwise. But, well, the water and tree thing is all about precision chakra focus to the feet. In that, it IS a jutsu, kinda. To do it, you need ability to control and emit chakra.
Granted, Rock Lee CAN control chakra. If I remember correctly, the Lotus and gate opening thing...is essentially pumping chakra flows to do bypass the normal limits of one's own body. So he can control it. But I don't think he can emit it.
The Lotus is an internal thing. I take it that...it's the emission of chakra beyond his body that Rock can't do. Given the walking tricks require specific amounts and patterns of chakra to be pumped out from the soles of your feet...

But, the point of them is that they take very, very small amounts, and he could at least raise a shimmer in the various Young Lee Meets Gai scenes where he's desperately trying to pull up enoguh chackra to do the Academy level jutsu. It might be all the power he can muster, but I do kind of think he could pull them off.
Also, I intend to have someone rip him a new one for going so far in the prelims, as soon as he had permission to use the full Lotus, when he was already whupping up on Gaara with only the first one or two Gates open. If he'd just kept going while he had Sandypants in shock at actually getting hurt, it would have been in the bag, but instead he tried to pull out his flashy finisher in a fight where style didn't matter, and defeated himself. The thing is... I don't know if Gai would actually say that, even after Lee recovered, so who would? Who would Lee even consider listening to, if not Gai?

Well, it depends on the precise nature of his handicap. Or rather, what you interprit the problem as being. We just know he can't do ninjutsu or genjutsu. The anime and manga says he can't. But it doesn't really tell us why he can't. At least...I don't remember any. I might be wrong, it's been a while since I viewed the relevant scenes.
Most fanfics I've read assume that there's something physically wrong with Lee. Like, there's something with his body...stopping him from being able to project chakra like most other ninja. Or he has less chakra. Others I've seen claim that Lee simply doesn't have any aptitude in that area - an issue of skill, or lack thereof.
Does canon actually say? I dunno.
The way I read it was...he can't do any ninjutsu or genjutsu. To me, if you're sending chakra out of your body, and it achieves some useful effect...then that's at least ninjutsu, however minor. So by my definition, water walking is ninjutsu. And we're told Lee cannot do ninjutsu, so...QED.
But...y'know, that's just my personal take, your milage may vary. Again, just what Lee can or cannot do...would depend on what you consider his problem to really be, and how you define stuff. Do you consider water walking to be a jutsu? If not, well. It all depends, yeah?
Quote:
Who would Lee even consider listening to, if not Gai?
Kakashi? He's Gai's eternal rival, of course, so Lee'd probably at least listen to 'im... 'cause, y'know, clearly GAI thinks that Kakashi's good.
But Kakashi's, well, Kakashi. 's unlikely he'd be inclined to give Lee advice. Unlikely isn't impossible, though, plausible circumstances could be found. In canon, Kakashi did kinda squint at Gai and pretty much go 'you taught him that? What were you thinking?' when the whole Lotus thing came out, so. There could be enough basis to build a scene on it. It need not be a terribly long verbal exchange.

"jutsu" just means "skill" or "technique" so asking if someting a person can do is a jutsu is always going to be answered "yes..." But I know what you MEANT, and I don't really think the control exercises count. As for the physical disability aspect, well, there has to be SOMETHING keeping a guy who does everything as full-bore as Lee from seeing some results, and I don't think i9t's because he doesn't try hard enoguh to learn. I thought there was an official explanation that he had less tenketsu where chakra is released, or something like that, thoguh when we see him in Neji's byakugan he looks the same as anyone else - of course, most of the time byakugan sight chakra coils are animated with a kyuubi-seal spiral in the belly whether the Hyuuga is looking at Naruto or not, and it's been rathyer a while since I read the relevant manga bits, so that evidence is not exactly reliable without furter checking. The only sure answer would be if Lee had been seen not wall or water walking when it would be neccesary - an enemy going up the sde of a cliff or out onto a lake and he can't follow, at least not the ninja way.

Yeah, you're right, bad word choice on my part. I was doing fine until the last paragraph.
Interesting, tho. I've never heard the tenketsu bit, ever. I'm not saying you're wrong, just that I've never seen that particular explanation before. I've read a metric crapload of fanfic, and I've seen many, many, theories on Lee...I've never seen that one. If that's canon, I wonder how I've missed it. o_o
Hn. Maybe I'll go back and check, if I can find the time. But, y'know, I'm lazy.
That aside, it could also be argued that...the whole walking on water and running up trees and stuff is precision control of one's chakra. And it's control because you need to channel specific amounts to the soles of your feet, in a particular way. It could be said that when it comes to shunting around chakra in the body, Lee's gotta be a master, since that's what the Lotus involves...
Enh...really, tho, I'd say handle it however is best for your purposes. You're telling a story. Details like that are up to you.

Having considered things a bit, I think Lee's probably GOT to be able to do these kind of tricks, or he'd be leaving craters with every step and immediately break through any bride he tried to cross, with how heavy we see his leg weights to be. Not breaking the branches off trees when he's forest-hopping is another clue that there's some kind of reinforcing effect going on. That siad, I think actually water walking would probably take as much concentration from him all the time as it does for a normal ninja just learning it, and the absolute top amount of chackra he can emit in a sustained fashion without damaging his tenketsu.
On another note, I need to remember to show, or at least mention, Zabusa and Haku dealing with (lack of) trust issues in their new home. Also, when Zabusa is being faced wit the deciscion when he meets TXY, the fact that wle he really is almost as cold-blooded as he pretends to be, his attempt at becoming Mizukage really was aimed at a degree of reform, the way Rikou & Co. think, even if not as MUCH as they think.
And of course, some beefed up opposition (already worked out) to drive home the point of how a shinobi who is protecting what they hold dear will keep going where a mere hired killer will not.

"What did you want to see me for?" Kakashi asked as he turned away from Konoha's monument to its fallen.
The younger Jounin shrugged and fell in beside him. "I talked to Tenten the other day."
"Oh? She told you something you want to confirm?"
"In a word," subject broached, Neshan hesitated before picking his approach.
"And your conclusions from when you watched us?"
Knowing that he'd been seen wasn't a problem; he hadn't really meant to hide from Kakashi anyway. "From what Rin-sensei said about her own training," Neshan began, as gently as he could, given the subject of the opening, "it looks like you're modeling your teaching style after Yondaime-sama's."
That got a smile, which might or might not have been sincere, but either way was sketched more in the angle of the senior ninja's head and the set of his shoulders than any expression on his face. "I have, yes."
"You're missing something," he told him, with the blunt directness that made some ninja regard working with him as a trial. "Actually a couple of somethings, but there's one that worries me - and Tenten. Rin-sensei had always described him as being a lot more active than I saw you being, and, for that matter, as tailoring his cues and signals to his audience rather than relying on them to pick up the standard ones which they might not have been trained in, yet. He left some fairly extensive training logs; when I checked them... The difference was striking."
Kakashi's usual air of distracted affability sloughed away as he devoted his entire attention to turning that thought over in his head, and when he turned fully to face his companion the look in his exposed eye was enough to send a chill up its target's back - though no Jounin, however junior, would ever be so sloppy as to show the reaction. "You have specific advice, I suppose."
Neshan inclined his head, and smiled politely. "First, I would suggest that jutsu and other active forms of training should be mixed in as part of missions and regular practice, rather than inserted between them or left for students to find and apply on their own. Enabling that is the purpose of the combination of Jounin-sensei and D-class missions in the first place. Second... Teamwork must be taught, too. Shown. It won't just happen on its own - or if it does, will be of an unreliable and inferior sort. The high emotions of combat will foster the neccessary attachments if nothing else does first, but experience is needed to smooth over their interactions to whatever degree needed to work effectively - and at this stage, providing that experience is the teacher's role, not the student's."
They met each others eyes for a long, tense moment, and then the pose of the loveable scarecrow snapped back into place. "You don't mince words much, do you?"
"It drives all sorts of people just crazy," Neshan answered conspiritorily.

Definitely needs some polish, but that's the shape of it.
