Elfin Lied is basically a long, unsubtle parody of the harem comedy genre. This will become more obvious as it goes on.

Unfortunately, I have to give it a little more time before I can watch it again. The anime club I go to was all set to watch it and, as it started, someone
found the violence to be downright histerical and they, along with the rest of their peanut gallery, started pulling a Walldorf and Statler on it. Ruined the
whole serious mood and tone for me. Had to actually walk out on Episode 1.

I am unconvinced that hysterical laughter was not the intended reaction to Elfin Lied. Generally, people who take it too seriously tend not to
like it.

Like i said, its a parody, a satire that plays itself completely straight.
