USS Fitzgerald has made it back to Yokosuka after the container ship ASX Crystal collided with the destroyer. Seven sailors are missing. The CO is in hospital in stable condition; two others are being treated in hospital; more are being treated aboard ship.

That's going to be quite the rebuild.

Depends on how bad the leaks under the waterline are.

What I'm seeing is a bunch of crumpled hull, but not any critical structural damage; it will take longer to refurbish the flooded berthing compartments than to actually patch the hull.

Sadly, that CO's carreer is OVER. Doesn't matter if the board of Inquiry finds him not at fault, the navy's never going to give him another command.

All of which reminds me of a very OLD (though updated slightly) Navy joke:

"Dammit, I'm a CARRIER, and I have the right of way! Adjust your course NOW"

"And I'm a Lighthouse. Your call..."

The situation is more complicated than that.

Firstly, the container ship has a bulbous bow, meaning that there is just as much carnage under the Fitz's waterline.

Secondly, this happened in an exceedingly dangerous passage with heavy shipping traffic and limited visibility due to land mass. The Fitz was, more likely than not, operating under restricted maneuvering rules and was unable to avoid a collision.

Look at what side of the Fitz the damage is on. She was heading IN TO port when it happened. Rules regarding shipping lanes state you always keep to the right side of the lane. Meanwhile, on the container ship, the damage on the bow was on the LEFT side.

Someone was trying to get into the lane in an awful goddamn hurry.

I wouldn't be too hopeful about the missing sailors. A collision like this probably means they're a smear.

Bodies of missing crew found - they found the remains in flooded compartments on the ship.

Poor guys. They probably got stuck in their racks where the bulkheads got shoved inwards. Sad

Hopefully they never woke up. Cant thing of anything worse than being trapped in a flooding space like that.

I haven't seen anything in the big news networks about it yet, but other websites are reporting that the ACX Crystal made two sharp turns, the second one right before it struck the Fitzgerald.

Or drunk. But still, it doesn't matter if the CO did everything right and the boards aquit him; he may not be relieved of his command, but he's never going to be offered another.

Hell, every one of his brother officers, junior or senior will sit around and pontificate about how if it had been them on the bridge they would have kept it from happening.

Have we heard if he was even on the bridge? from the fact that guys were in their racks asleep it sounds like the sea and anchor detail wasn't set yet; and if it was that hour of the morning the chances are that the officer of the watch was fairly junior. Again, the sort of things that give CO's ulcers.

The original report was that the CO was the most severely injured of the survivors - that indicates to me that he probably wasn't on the bridge. But I'm Tuesday-morning-quarterbacking here with limited data.

The CO was asleep in his stateroom... As was his right given that it was something like 2 or 3am when this went down.

CBC is now reporting "U.S. Navy to halt, review operations as 2nd collision leaves 10 sailors missing". No story link yet.--

This troubles me.  It may not be the third time, but somehow this strikes my paranoia as Enemy Action.  But who, and why?Hear that thunder rolling till it seems to split the sky?
