XCOM, Second Contact (ME/XCOM) has a chapter 23, as of about a week ago. Before they were introduced to the Citadel, the humans had a bit of a formative experience with a rather different group of aliens. I only just started reading this, but I assume someone must have posted it in New Fic already. It has quite a lot of awesome. It also has, thus far, about as much character death as you'd expect out of a fic directly inspired by the recent XCOM game.

No, he literally came back from the dead... twice. Basically his heart and lungs self destructed to the point they needed replacement badly. I think heart is now savable, but he literally (read his profile on FF.net) stop writing from horrible medical conditions that persist.
He update Gaijin a bit back (like over a month ago), and just did a matter of force with what I think is two chapters. So you only missed one previous update.
