Rob's got a major point here. The forums have always been rules-light, but seriously, I don't want to have to be forced to shut down or worse because we couldn't credit someone whose work we love when sharing his work. I'm going to have to insist on this in the future -- if you repost from xkcd or somewhere else with similar licensing, respect that licensing (and the creator) and include the link.
This doesn't mean you have to document every image posted. I know all too well how many have no obvious source or rights owner. But if the source asks for a simple acknowledgement and linkback, give it to them.

To be honesty I generally find these on facebook or various forums, and never thought about possible legal issues.
Which is somewhat stupid of me, but not thinking through the longer term results of my actions has always been a problem of mine
