I think it works, really. Enough detail to establish the twisted evil of the perpetrator and yet not so much to feel like you're just going for the grossout factor - and if you've seen the latest fansubs of the anime, it's only greater quantity than what we've seen on screen, from the fake Kabuto - thouh to be fair, he did it to himself, rather than having it done as some torturous vivisection. Still for the squeamish, if you haven't watched the filler arc after Sasuke's defection, skip it.
