Damn. I read Strictly Speaking and A Civil Tongue during college, thirty-plus years ago. I may've already been a grammar Nazi, but Newman showed me it could be a noble -- albeit hopeless -- cause. One of my most vivid memories from those books is his citing the pretentiousness of California Governor Jerry Brown's statement about riding in a limousine to a ceremonial function (his swearing-in, if I remember right): "I cannot relate to that material-possessory consciousness."
