What if I was expecting good storytelling and respect for both the characters and the audience? A positive moral message? Internal continuity? No? At least some basic logic?

well, you aren't wrong, but I've seen 'fans' throw a hissyfit simply because a a show/movie doesn't match their headcanons, as if their personal interpretations of the material are the only true canon.
