Crossovers that MUST be

I tend to take the view that a good story is allowed a cheat/handwave or two if that is necessary to set up the situation or otherwise get the story started.  Using methods of that sort to conclude the story is another matter.  If a consistent explanation can be found instead, that would be better, but IMO just saying the Garden make the transition to El Hazard with an earthquake as the only effect seen on Earth would be acceptable to get an idea with this much potential rolling.  Higher- or trans-dimensional effects might be more severe, justifying the TSAB reaction to these efforts.

No, I don't believe the world has gone mad.  In order for it to go mad it would need to have been sane at some point.

Rewatching StrikerS, I noticed something interesting.  In Ep. 20, when Due kills off the brains, she describes how they created Jail Scaglietti.  She says
Quote:The genius that you found, created, and raised.  With the knowledge of a lost world and the infinite greed within him, the pride of Al Hazard.  Development codename: Unlimited Desire.
Following her banishment, Precia worked with Scaglietti for a time on the artificial mage project, Project Fate.  She then disappeared, searching for a path to Al Hazard.  Coincidence?  I think not!

Not to derail the conversation, but given that the last several pages seem to have been dedicated to nothing but the discussion of this one idea, perhaps it should spin off into its own thread so that this one can be available for more general "crossovers that must be" suggestions?

Coming back from watching Iron Man 2 I had two ideas I'd like to share. Don't worry there are no spoilers for the movie.
Idea number one. The Iron Man movieverse is the same universe where Full Metal Panic occurs. Only the timeline for the movies is a five years and some spare change before any Arm Slaves were produced. Tony Stark himself could be some sort of proto-whispered. Except his hair is black. Where the plot for this story goes is anyone's guess since I haven't thought that far. Tongue
Idea number two. Given how One Piece is about how you take a fruit that gives you a specific power and you expand on this power by being extremely crafty and imaginative with the applications of the power which leads to you being badass. Why not take a dimensionally displaced Misaka Mikoto who is used to working/exploring to the pinnacle of her abilities, either sans power or with her powers intact, and place her onboard the Going Merry. A Certain Scientific Pirate.

On Idea one:  I'd stick with a more Vietnam campaign like from the comics if you want that to work.
On Idea 2:  Please remember that you don't actually join Luffy D. Monkey's crew so much as conscripted... so she'd have to fulfill a role Luffy feels his crew is lacking in.  I'd leave her with her powers... the setting allows it... being on Luffy's crew encourages this.  So there is no reason not to leave them.  Though the alternate tech thing would throw her off for a bit.
For added fun, drop a few random clones of hers into the same world ,with aging fixed so they don't tip anyone off to there lifespans.  Then have them overheard (disturbing amount of identical girls in a cluster demands attention or just drop them off in/on random towns/islands).  Put some booze in one or more and have them rambling drunkenly about how hot it was when Toma stopped them from being genicided... have them babble about that in a vauge manner and have her/them mention they have numbers as names as mom/progenitory/grand older sister has had over 10,000 spawn.  A little cleaver wordplay and misunderstanding and its easy enough to convince people that Toma is the god that took down the devil, that the devil fruits are from.  A bit more effort and Toma's null power is the power of the sea that contains devil fruit users.  Basically, the convince the world at large that they are some holy race (so many of them with the same powers, immune to the salt water effect, etc...) and Accelerator is literally the devil.  Not having the prime clone is bound to warp them a bit... the lack of mega-hivemind and all.  In other words, a secret creation story with physcal back up that... that WG's rsponse to is panic.  This will lend in even more crediblity.
Even without the clones, you can get the same plot going, electrical power, salt water has no effect, superpowerful... traveling with Robin and the Strawhats... instant old one.  Having a physical old god against you is going to cause the World Government to freak.... and drop a huge bounty on some complete unknown.  Also, Enil will stalk her... If she can smite him a few time in public... which he really, really deserves...  it'll add credance to this idea in the public mind.  Though If he sees her as a destined mate, unwanted archrival (I'm sure the parrallel with her and Toma who hit her eventually), or mortal enemy (he heard the myth and things its his job to avenge the devil, therefore accend to Accellerators old job), or just declare himself her high preist is debatable.
Then there are the snails.  Those electrically power communication snails.  The ones she'll be able to eventually control with her mind... which if done pre-Luffy contact could get her drafted as ship communication officer.  Have her have wearing a jacket with one of those snails on it (it was cheap and warm/comfortable) and/or carry around flat metal snails (thin and sharp enough to make good electrosaw sword parts, easy to carry and cheap from a tacky souvenir shop).  This will make it real easy to convince people she is responsible for those things in the first place.

Dresden Files/Death Note
I can't help but feel the Death Note could be dropped into the Dresdenverse and fit perfectly. The Shinigami are obviously some form of Outsider, and the Note itself is likely near equal in power to one of the Blackened Denarii.
Also, there's the whole name thing to consider.

I wouldn't say that this MUST be (indeed, Gryphon would probably say that it must NOT be), but it's certainly a persistent notion. At some point I realized that the primary author of The Universe According to Chris (part of the UF canon) is the same Chris Meadows who occasionally contributes to the Chakat Universe shared setting (and is easily one of the better authors there, surpassing in quality much of the originator's work). Since then, I've been wondering how natives of one setting would react to being translocated to the other, and how that setting would react to the Visitors.

This was brought on by a spelling mistake.
To unwind after the Book of Darkness incident, Nanoha goes to visit her uncle Takahata, and participate in the annual festival at Mahora Academy, the school where her uncle works as a teacher.

These Dreams
Colonel Doug "Looney Tunes" Sangnoir lands on Elm Street....

"WHO ARE YOU?!?!?"
"Me?  I'm just a cute lil' bunny rabbit.  So... wazzup, Doc?"
(My other choice here was "Your worst nightmare," but the image of Doug nonchalantly-but-with-menace nibbling on a carrot before opening Can O'Whoopass #3.14159, well.....)

"You call those things claws?  Dude, please -- I know at least a dozen women with fingernails deadlier than that, and only half of them are catgirls."

"System.  Play 'Dream Police.'"  (AFAIK 'Dream Police' isn't a Power Song, and the lyrics don't really lend themselves to putting the likes of Freddy in Dream Jail.  But I have faith in Doug's subconscious.  Smile )

I had a cognitive disconnect here when part of my brain somehow substituted "Sesame Street" for "Elm Street".  (O_oWink

Another song possibility would be Dream Warriors (especially since it was the theme song for Elm Street 3)  *grin*
... sudden thought, Dream Warriors effect in this case being something like A little Help From My Friends, cue Warriors Alpha whoopin Freddie's butt.

Hmmmmm...

I was pretty sure I had a good idea how this Kruger fellow thought. Now I hoped I had enough willpower to beat him at his own game. The song was ready to go, so all I had to do was concentrate and say the words, "Play Song."

Sure enough, the surroundings started to reflect my desires. They were somewhat more grim than I was used to, but that's the nature of the song.

"What is this?" Freddy asked when he discovered he couldn't change the dreamscape, or stop Alice Cooper's voice from filling the area.

I grinned. "Welcome to My Nightmare."

Less a "MUST be" than a "should be", and arguably actually canon:

According to quite a number of sources (probably all deriving from the Wikipedia article on the company), one episode of Angel includes a claim that Yoyodyne Propulsion Systems is a client of Wolfram and Hart.

Yoyodyne, for those not familiar with the name, is the company run by Red Lectroids in The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension.

This means that it is arguably Buffy/Angel canon that the events of Buckaroo Banzai occur in the background, where nobody's paying attention to them - and, by corollary to that, that Buckaroo Banzai himself exists in the Buffyverse.

This simply demands to be taken advantage of in a fic, but I've never seen one that even tried.

(Edit: Bob, this also means that you have the opportunity to actually combine two Steps if you want to... or use one to revisit the world of the other, with Doug not realizing they're the same world, at least not at first.)
