Crossovers that MUST be
Imagine...
...a world of will, where sheer determination can make anything possible, but where that will is dependent upon love and hope.

...a world of mecha powered by the limitless fires of their pilots' wills, but where those fires are fueled by their lovers' music.

...a world of drills that will pierce the Heavens, powered by songs that will shatter the gates of Hell.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we give you: MACROSS TOPPA GURREN LAGGAN.

(Christopher Lloyd voice):  "My God, it'll be beautiful."

(Doug-Sangnoir-as-Peter-Venkmann voice):   "I love this place! I want to be a part of it! I just need to convince Maggie to emigrate...."

There are Time Lords among us. Geniuses with the ability to reach any point in history. In 1963, a corporation known as Torchwood
isolated a young Time Lord named John Smith and exploited his genius for

The Dude. Who I happen to think would make an excellent Time Lord. He would mellow the Daleks to death.

One inspired by a couple of anime themes playing back-to-back on "random play" mode...:

They've started high school. They've formed a club, and formed a band. And only they have the power to save the Earth from invaders from beyond space itself.

There's the friendly girl who becomes the group's moral centre as she learns about this world that's new to her. There's the competent, somewhat-shy one. There's the genki girl who (unfortunately) plays up to the stereotypes of her position. There's the blonde who sometimes seems like she's from a whole different world, with so many secrets about her family. And there's the adviser who knows so much more than the others but can't take part herself.

Maho Shojo Ho-kago Teatime! Listen to Their Song...

(crossing K-On! and Lyrical Nanoha - map Yui to Nanoha, Mio to Suzuka, Ritsu to Arisa, Mughi to Fate, and Sawaka-sensei to Admiral Lindy... Ui and Nodoka, who fill the advisory/support roles in K-on!, can map to the personality templates for Raising Heart and Bardiche, respectively.)

Egads.  You realize the sort of fun we can have writing a fic like this?  Really, with The Master and The Gentleman... you have two seriously competent villains!

I started a "crossovers" thread over on Usenet and got a few replies. "MadPanda" suggested (IMHO) a Crossover That Should Be:

Negima / Pani Poni Dash

Two genius teachers, each younger then the students they teach... and at least a few of each teacher's students have some remarkable abilities of their own. I only have one question: Do they work together, at cross-purposes, or against each other?

Harry Potter and the Pumpkin King

Jack Skellington was amused - people were really getting into celebrating Halloween this year! Then he heard talk about renaming it 'Harry Potter Day' and wasn't so amused. On the bright side, Jack could ensure the boy would be raised to have proper respect for the spookiest day of the year.

I figure, Harry's life always seems to get exciting on Halloween - surely Jack would take an interest if he noticed. I'd love to try writing it, but everything I know about Tim Burton's The Night Before Christmas (and sequel) comes from Kingdom Hearts.

- CD

ETA: Come to think of it, a Buffy/TBNBC crossover could work too...

I've never seen The Corpse Bride, but I'm reasonably sure that they never visit Hallowe'en Town. The film which does feature Hallowe'en Town is titled The Nightmare Before Christmas, by the way.[/PEDANT]
Other than my obligatory objections as a pedant, I say YES.

On that note, what do you think would make a good crossover with James and the Giant Peach? I'm fairly sure it should not be crossed with the other Burton works; there isn't even enough common ground to make a hilariously bad crossover like most of what's over in the "Should Not Be" thread.

Rob, what net.group has that thread? rec.arts.anime.creative? I realize it's probably a rec.arts.anime.* group. This isn't the type of thing you find at the Scary Devil Monastery, after all.

Seconding that... though I think you'd have to have an explaination for how that happened without digital MT-Largo copy infecting him like a virus.  Personally, I'd go with a old joke peice of fan art in which Ping is hitched up to a Paystation while one of the Final Fantasy games is running.  the results in Ping obliterating a large area as she manages to summon Bahamut and he uses Mega Flare.  You can send Largo and Ping into the future simply by having this happen with a game of Crono Trigger as MT-Largo manages to write a program that will make Ping voice act the script.  Which totally something I can see Largo doing.. One glitch/undocumented feature later and you have a method of a crossover that makes enough sense.
Note this needs to be time travel... as then you can BGC Largo have picked his name from the Legend of MT-Largo.  The war god that managed to defeat the one who manipulated that game which almost fell to one manipulators all but two on the system.  One accidently seduced the manipulator and the other somehow managed to entirely bypass the emotional interaction system despite playing daily for two years and constantly having social interaction.  He became the Standard War God for online play.  BGC Largo is totally ripping off the name and the mythos.  He is trying to steal the Legend... old school game developers insist the Largo was based on a entirely real player and they didn't make him up.
Urban legends explain that the (MT) Largo entered Japan on a visa gained by defeating a ninja in mortal combat, but spared him and took the ninja as an apprentice..  He went on to make fully functional combat robots out of cardboard.  was his own side in several wars fought in Tokyo, the young one completely refuse to believe how weird pre-Earthquake Tokyo was... at all,. Distortions of crazy old folks.  Oddly the UL insisst he had a magical girl apprentice with a pet zombie Kaiju, as a house pet.  Simply put a viral marketing campaign was the myth of there being an actual living Largo.  That he is readily associated with popular voice actresses and what is rumored to be living with an impossiblely human gyniod that existed a decade before research into boomers even began is not helping this urban legends credibility.  Then there is the bit about her being a game system periferial.  Madness.
The 30 odd years after the last reported sighting of the Legendary Largo cardboard robots inexplicably take down a top of the line assassin boomer... on security camera no less.  Its leaked before Genom can stop it and goes viral.  The rumor mill goes wild.  The Legend appears fleetingly in public often with someone cosplaying as the robot girl... who later kills off several C-55s (standard street punk models) via telephone pole based trauma after the try to abduct her.  Again on camera.   Then someone successful, who was on a talk show, randomly gets asked about the clip and the guy is stunned... its... its Great Teachers Largo... the man he owes his success to.  The Teacher who taught in the completely, unreplicatable style that involved only speaking English, but doing it so dynamically that the entire class, and several others in the school, learned fuant English mostly to find out what he was speaking so dynamically about.  Oddly there is also the popular girl, Ping... neither appears to have aged a day in 30 odd years.  Things get weirder as videos of the riot that resulted when they attempted to fire him are rereleased.  Every then student in the school at the time found backs this up.. many have a religious reverence for the GTL.
Evenrually, BGC Largo attempts to claim Ping as she is like an ancient Fey.  An incomprehencible ethereal beauty from before the Dawn of (Boomer) Time.  He attempts to capture her, manipulate her and threaten her into his ownership... a combination of her Knight and Paramour (or what he sees MT Largo as) and Ping freaking out at his obsessiveness mean he gets no where... and constantly knocked out and/or defeated.  When BGC Largo attempts to escalate things MT Largo manages to get a ninja Clan and a magical girl team (and their thieving trainer) as back up... them two corporate operatives are thawed out of cryo and it becomes a four way.  Occasionally the AD Police and the Knight Sabers or other groups get involved.
Quincy washes his hands of the mess, though he does watch the AD Police published train wreck TV show made of the footage... meaning they get funding.  Which helps when the alien invasions and random zombie armies and what not come out of nowhere.  The Boo line of merchandise is a best seller and funds descent arm developement.
MT Largo is trying to find a copy of Crono Trigger and can't.  In the meantime, he arms Ping with what game he can find and a porable Playstation back pack.  Her extra fire power is dependant on what games he can get old disks of.  In addition he is systematically hunting down every NPC with his name and high landering them all across all games.  BGC Largo is his rival and can't win even with hacks.

eh, I'd throw the Knight Sabers in as regulars if only to see how they scratch their heads at this nonsense. Besides, they'll be counted as rogue boomers - like Doug was in DWII. The whole Largo name thing won't help matters any, either.

Oh, I don't disagree the Knight Sabers would be involved... I just wasn't concentrating on them in that post.  Note I saved Irene completely by accident with the fearbots.  Nene can interact with Largo via online games... I can totally see her ending up with Largo dragging her into his anti-poser quest.  She'd get the 'reference' MT Largo was making and I can see her RPing as Pyro as Piro's character's daughter... only to discover her Largo tribute friend she has tanking is strangely immue to charm, seduction, and mind control.  Basically, he has somehow managed to avoid tripping a single emotion flag in the game and the developers have to allow it as he isn't coming close to hacking and as much as it urks them, he is actually channeling more Largo then they've ever seen before in a player.
Its easy to have Nene also know an older than anyone will admit and young looking dispatcher.  She works for AD Police as she insists its part of the family business and only Leon and the cheif, who hasn't bothered to interact with her in public, actually believe her that she has grand kids.  Leon mostly as he has been around that long.  In the background, every dispatcher is an expert in at least one field of invasion combat and tactics..Nene is the hacking and cyber crimesoperative.  Its just been mostly an endless parade of rouge boomers recently.  Though of the field agents only Leon and Daily actually have dealt with anything else.  Once something besides boomers show up, it turns out that the budget has been spent on everything but anti-boomer EQ.   Which is why Genom can get away with blocking them getting said EQ, the mooks are expendable and the Knights Sabers vigilante work is saving the city a fortune.  The K-11s are actually classified as antizombie weapons.  Leon really does just keep sneaking them into the field against boomers (as the only high level guy field guy operating and is thus not expendable, the yelling is pushed by bean counters)..
In other words, the anti-boomer operations are things which the military should be dealing with.  Boomers are designed for military work and the C-55s are spy and bodyguard units.  The city council won't allow artillery strikes in town and with so few actual attacks the military refuses to waste competent assets in Mega Tokyo.  The SOLs are there for dealing with all the crap that is in a two decade long lull.  Genom is evil... but they get away with a lot of there shenanigans as they are in place for all the invasions... which are on vacation or something.  Again Genom is evil... but most of their openly malignant antics are because they are evil and really, really bored.  Once the invasions picks up, the infrastructure starts showing its actually useful for something.  The military is still as useless as canon.
This is how Genom gets away with everything... its set up for an enviroment that is on lull and the younger generation simply won't believe the older generation.  Mega Tokyo is for the young.  The Knight Sabers private Wars is entirely justified... Bored Genom are expletives and pull the same crap... they just expected it would get lost in the invasion shuffle and have managed to dodge most retribution through whinging about how taking them down would leave the world open to attack.  The city council and government are made up of old guard people who remember the invasions and the new guard refuse to believe isn't not all old TV shows.  Suddenly BGC isn't so much Grim Darkish as an out of context issue.  And lots of Bordom.
Sexroids are the result of a lab explosion at Sony... caused by a Ping sister that suffered a break down (the Metal Gear dating sim broke her with anti-logic and being run through plot from every angle and just having it go way over her head, paranoid insanity followed) and she Special Opsed her kind out of existence.  Ping was the only survivor as she was taken home off the record and the MG Crazy Ping sister thought she was in the lab.  The operative who was suppose to bring her in got involved in a private war with a rival on a corporate espionage.  Really they only needed her for two days so they could download her specs and a basic AI backup.  Then she could go back to in field stress testing.  Instead Dom, Ed, and Largo happened.  The project was taken up by the H division and they were mostly programmers.  Remember Ping is anatomically correct and fully functional physically  She is also a non H model and is not being used correctly as a peripheral.  She is basically rather confused and writing her own programming.
With Ping nonexistent, the researchers largely offed, and both Operatives, who know what happened, missing... The project collapsed into limbo.  They found Crono Trigger in the machine and half a controller... and a lack of couch.  So they decided to wait in cryo until the Internets detected them in the future.  The past already checked.
Once the cyborg tech came around the H-division made Sexroids.... pity all that super smiting strength and game ability manifestation powers are lost tech.  All Glory to the HypnoToad it was.

I missed this a couple days ago when I put my own recent idea up, but - if you look closely - in one of the scenes of the PPD anime there's a poster for a volleyball game between Momotsuki HS (the PPD school) and the Mahora Junior Girls (or whatever Negi's part of Mahora Academy is called) - though I only spotted it because of the PDF notes include when GG took over fansubbing. Still, even if only by easter egg reference, that puts this close enough to canonical coexistence for fan works...

An incredibly dangerous anarchist/terrisrist/etc. has fled to an interdicted world, and the details about why exactly it's forbidden are classified so high the Central Computer is the only one with the authority to read them... and for some reason (possibly the same it keeps absolving them of responsibility?) the Lovely Angels ae the only ones the CC is willing to brief in and have go after him. The place is too low-tech to fly around in their ship, though personal gear can be explained away as magic since the locals have regressed to a medieval state, so they park it in the back of beyond under cover of night with a good supply of chow for Mughi, lock up and get to walking. Eventually they find the road they saw from the air (not nearly as quickly as they'd thought - they usually just use the flight packs to get over this kind of crap, damn it!) and head for town.

Along the way, they meet some locals, and in the course of asking about their target (Damn, no planetary data net to pull records and surveillance footage from!?) learn that he's already caused trouble and the group is also looking for him. Trying to describe how careless he is about collateral damage and how dangerous with his "magic weapons" just makes their leader more eager to take him on and claim them for herself, and arguing further just convinces her that the Angels simply want to keep the loot for themselves, and more insistent on either working together or finding him first on her own. Yuri and a short, too-young-for-bounty-hunting-looking dark haired girl blow identical sighs and and comment on the redheads being too much alike in stereo. The tall blonde local in armor wonders what they're talking about, since Lina's hair is much longer than taht other girl, and she couldn't wear a bikini like that- and gets smacked into the ground. And so on. Wacky hijinx and mass destruction ensue.

Yes, it's Dirty Pair/Slayers... let the universe tremble in fear. That might even be why the Lost Universe was lost - it was actually hiding!

At some point, Lina actually does wear a bikini like that, and we realise it's only her massive shoulder pads and loose tops that have been overshadowing her otherwise rather nice (if not as bountiful as some) figure. If the characters manage to clue in on camera, someone (Zelgadis? He's still a guy, but has more important things on his mind) should say something like, "Oh, you didn't realise? I thought it was obvious." "THEN WHY DIDN'T YOU SAY SO ALL THOSE TIMES I GOT UPSET ABOUT IT?" demands Lina. "Because I know better than to comment on a woman's figure when she's already feeling defensive about it." This might be followed by a new target for the Righteous Holy Feminine Beatdown of Wrath, or mutters of "you and your stupid logic."

As for the bad guy, he somehow found out about the locals' ability to use magic, and that it's a learnable skill for at least some outsiders, and wants that power for himself whether by personally gaining the ability or at minimum turning a few mages to his ideology and recruiting them. My Pair-Fu is weak, but I think there was one of the movies with a similar plot.

- CD, has mentioned this before, but not in any detail beyond crossover titles

ETA: Yes, there was, sorta. The Affair on Nolandia is about a single, psychic girl who's being sought after, and if it's put into continuity for the Angels (original, not Flash, if I was writing it) it would actually give a rational explanation for why they were the ones picked, having experience with strange powers before. P{lus it's the opportunity for a naked-Kei-flashback and the line, "Fine, but if I end up floating around naked in a cloud of pink smoke again, I'll just blow up the planet and count it solved!"
